As an American, would you want to take a chance of being there illegally and then trying to find work - always wondering whether someone might turn you in to the authorities and you'd face possible deportation. the times I've done jury duty, I could not get myself to look at the defendant at the table. They would attempt to look at the jury with puppy dog eyes, but for the most part, I believe Juries don't want to look at defendants to help them just focus on the facts being presented.
