There's one MASSIVE dealbreaker for me: the S23 FE has no physical proximity sensor. It uses virtual proximity sensing like it does on its cheap A series devices. This means the phone can't tell when it's actually at your ear, or in your pocket, or when it's just in a dark room and not your pocket. This is why my S20 FE would incessantly turn on in my pocket, or freak out when using it in a dark room.
But thing is, proximity sensors aren't expensive to put in at all. Virtually every other cheap phone besides Samsung's has physical proximity sensors. They had proximity sensors in their older A50 and A70 phones from 2019. It makes no sense.

The S23 FE should have come with a SD 8+ Gen 1 at the lowest and an SD 8 Gen 2 proper. The FE series should not have dropped microSD card support. The FE should have had a consistent release schedule instead of a "will they, won't they" release schedule. And with the A series, people are going to just go for an A series phone. The A55 still works on GSM carriers so fans of the A series will import it. Samsung messed this up. The phone is overpriced for what you get. On Samsung's website, the FE costs $690 for the 256GB option. There's a OnePlus 12R with a SD 8 Gen 2 for $529 for the 256GB option on OnePlus' website. If Samsung wants this to sell, drop the price down to $500 for 256GB option and offer a trade in to further reduce cost. Samsung killed the FE line when it didn't have to. S series sales are correctly sluggish because the YOY proposition is not strong.
So that is why the A series is more popular.

The S23 FE is just a rebranded A74, which never came out. Plus the SD 8 Gen 1 (and the Exynos equivalent here in the EU) has horrible battery life, resulting in less screen-on-time than the base S23 despite a much larger battery in the FE. Because of that I just went for a base S23 256GB. I don't even mind the bezels much tbh, I probably would've gotten it if it had the SD8+ Gen 1 with the fixed thermals and battery drain issues instead.
