    The thing with Tool is you don't hear the intricacies and different layers the first couple times you listen to it. It constantly gets better the more you hear it because you start noticing the different layers. What's so great about this video is it forces you to see the different drum layers even on first listen. you can't just hear Tool and like it, you have to actively listen to appreciate it. The newest album requires more attention than previous ones. If you want to keep the momentum, show him Lateralus next.

    Gotta give Maynard credit where credit is due. He’s one of the most profound lyricist of all time and he’s a pretty good rock singer on top of it.

    TOOL lets YOU know when it’s time to understand TOOL music. It took me almost 20 years before I really understood just how good this band is. I now have a deep appreciation for such an amazing band.

    Danny is incredible! Danny has 8 Mandala electronic pads. When he first started and you asked what that was , was a Mandala pad. They have multiple programmable areas to change sounds depending where he hits them. Right after that when he turned and started the triplets he was hitting a Korg Wave drum which he goes back to numerous times. Its been said they wired his brain into many sections because he can play 4 different rhythms and time signatures at the same time.

  • @glacieractivity
    @glacieractivity Před 3 lety +3

    After the pad-intro - the entire band jumps into the first verse - and goes in 33/8 metrics. For me most easy to break down as 5/8, 11/8, 12/8 and 5/8. Then they open up into flat 4/4 (where one can headbang) before returning the polymetric heaven again - where he adds fills within metric changes.
    The intermezzo starts out full polyrhythmic, however. Follow the high-hat keeping a straight square while his right and left arms are circling and tying up together/separating - as you have to different size wheels spinning at different speeds. Until his kick-drum and both his arms lock onto the simple hi-hat that has stayed in the quarter pace (almost like a clicker) and everything opens up into the full-scale rock and roll 4/4 crescendo.
    Everything having circled around that simple high-hat not changing at all.
    But as important - It is sometimes a thought process to know if it is bass or the guitar that does the metrics /rhythm-section - and allow Danny to use his extremely melodically tuned drumset to actually play the melody while the band and Maynard's voice actually are there to support him playing the lead instrument.
    The interaction between Danny and Justin (bass) is especially interesting to ponder when in the analytical corner because Justin is so stable when the metrics and rhythmics become layered - so they can lean on each other and in a sense also set each other free. Like sometimes Justin is musically telling to Danny "Go all octopus on us here while I keep polymetric patterns under control for the band. Sometimes you can hear Danny's kick-drum lock onto a 5/8 pattern (etc) from the bass - while all his other limbs go in all sorts of other directions (since Danny trained on Indian Tabla - and them Indian boys playing the Tabla - they have trained their wrists to go
    I would be bored too if they just used it to show off. But I find that they use it in composition. Causing effects of closing down and open up - similar to a symphonic orchestra works when they split the violins from the cello-section - when the orchestra goes contrapuntal for example. Which Tool does a lot.
    Do not start with music theory though. Have a spliff instead and listen to the flow. It is easy to get irritated by trying to count the numbers because they will throw us off every 10 seconds (especially us in the west who may get thrown off by a waltz in 3/4 - since our music is so stuck in 4 over 4). Stop counting - and just feel it.

    The sick thing about the drumming is that he actually chances the timing to go with what he lyrics are saying. He falls out of a timing when lyrics are about loss, comes back on when the lyrics speak of breathing in.... the shit gets deep when you put it all together.

    I didn't really start getting into Tool till 10,000 Days. I knew about them, enjoyed some of their music, but never really "got it." Then I bought 10KD and, heh... it stayed in my car's CD player for the better part of a year. Finally got to see them in concert about 5 years ago. Now, even though I have a giant Spotify playlist, I pretty much stick to Tool. They are not an easy band to just get in to for a lot of people. It does take time, but when they finally get it, it's like all other music acts start falling flat.

    For your next Tool song, I'd recommend to either go for maximum heaviness with Ticks & Leeches, or go for some middle ground, with something like The Grudge, Jambi, or Vicarious. I see a lot of people recommending Lateralus, but I think that one is more along the lines of one of the types of songs that Scott said he hasn't cared for in the past. It's maybe best to get hooked a bit more first before you hit that one up.
