This so much. Also not necesarily gender specific, although some women are weird af (likely on defensive stance thinking you want to score) .
First time I've ever been cheered on energetically was this young girl. She was red as a flag so I went ask her if she was ok and complimented her on pushing herself so hard and doing full range movements at it. Later we ended up sharing racks and after i spotted for her she became the hype woman on her turns, it was big nice.

On the topic of the "lunk alarm": I've 100% experienced this at Planet Fitness. I was new to a leg press machine, was having trouble locking the back into place for positioning it properly, dropped the metal bar (that was probably less than 5lbs) used to lock it into place, and suddenly my ears are exploding. If anything, it made me feel self-conscious and judged for not knowing how to adjust the back of the machine. I wasn't kicked out or anything, but it was extremely unsettling with how random and insanely loud it was, and if I had been lifting weights at the time, I very well may have dropped them.

the Lunk Alarm is way too loud. One time I was at PF, someone set off the alarm and it wouldn't shut off, so it ruined my workout and I just left. I complained about it to PF, but their PR team just told me they don't control individual gyms.

I've been going to the gym for a few years now. I was morbidly obese when I startes. I am still obese, closing in on overweight. I've gone to multiple gyms because I had to move town twice and the first gym I went to closed due to Covid economic issues. I have NEVER had a single issue. EVER. No weird looks, no comments, nothing but an encouraging environment. I haven't even seen any planet fitness (I think its a USA thing?) but from what I heard it seems to me that even leaving aside all the issues, PF is just... useless. I mean if your issue is you don't wanna go to the gym because you're self conscious. What you need is to go to the gym so that image disappears. You don't need a "gym for people who don't go to the gym", that's ridiculous and counter productive. Even without the pizza, without the lank alarm, without the dress code, without the membership issues... Take away all that. Its still a bad idea.

To use his example, I was that near 400lb guy in a normal gym, going 1mph on a treadmill drenched in sweat, barely hanging on. If anything, the community was cheering me on. It's been my experience that people in normal gyms absolutely aren't sitting there harassing new/overweight people. As long as you're there to put in the work, I've never met a more inviting community. Since I moved and had to use a Planet Fitness due to lack of a real gym in the area, I've never felt more judged at a gym. I'm down to 260lbs and now I'm in a gym that doesn't allow barbells, heavy weight, large waterbells, etc. And on top of that, we're in the gym trying to lose weight and you've got a gym shoving pizza, bagels, and donuts at people. Most of us are the size we are because of our lack of self-control, and you offer up a vice? Good business model, but as a gym, this place is a joke.

I think a lot of these people might go to a normal gym and see it packed with all these extremely fit people and they're one of or even the only person who's considerably over weight and feel quite insecure about it and be much less likely to go back...I think that's what they mean by "intimidation." We should of course be empathetic and understanding of the circumstances, but we simply cannot make changes on our system without a death certificate. Although once we have a death certificate then things will go smoothly. Maybe at most you could give a free month so that no payments would be taken from the customer and allow them time to handle the proceedings?

As someone who has worked VERY hard on cutting calories and eating healthier over the last year, I can speak from experience and in the beginning for me it was so hard to stay on track with my diet. It is so easy for that one slice of pizza to suddenly trigger cravings and false ideas of “I deserve it” after working hard. Then all of a sudden that cheat meal turns into a cheat day. Sure, at the end of the day the responsibility lies with me to control myself but they definitely aren’t making it easy by rubbing the food in your face. Food can be a serious addiction.

Reason being they would come up to us and tell us we were not allowed to hug each other while we were working out. It was our way to encourage each other to do better and they complained about the PDA.
We also noticed on one day that every time we hugged each other, the Lunk Alarm would go off. We were around the corner from the front desk so they couldn’t see us but the camera was pointing right at us. No one was grunting or dropping weights, the only think you could hear was the ridiculous music. There was no reason to ring the alarm. So I tested it, and sure enough the alarm went off every time I flipped off the camera.
We confronted the front desk and they told us they weren’t watching the cameras and that the alarm was for weight dropping, which again, wasn’t happening. We cancelled our membership when we continued getting harassed and had better experiences at a local gym.

I kepted going for 3 months and went from 145 lbs to 190 lbs. When I started I was curling only 25 lbs dumbells. After 3 months I was curling 75's trying my hardest to get to 80's. These guys laughing at me became my inspiration when they yelled while lifting. So I imitated. I might have motivated some to keep coming in to laugh, idk. But I made some friends there because I adapted and kept going. It didn't intimidate me. These guys were great and became supportive anytime I had questions. That intimidation thing in the gym comes from trying to compare yourself to someone else.
Sure you see models, muscular huge and generally gorgeous people in the gym and you want that look too. Who wouldn't? You came to the gym to do this. But those gorgeous or muscle people started from somewhere. I think PF doesn't help with comparing yourself with others and it is the source of insecurities. You might ask here why I stopped going to the gym after 3 months? Because I reached my goal. I just didn't want to be excessively skinny anymore. So even after all of it I'm just a casual who just wanted a little muscle in the least amount time possible and had some fun learning from great people who take it way more serious than I do and I respect them a lot because I came in not just to get bigger and stuff. When I was just out of high school in 1989 and starting my career as a cop I used to work out at Gold's Gym. I was skinny and tall and there were some monsters in there. People who really knew how to put on the weight and the gym had that sound and feel of a place where people are super serious about what they are doing. No one. Not one huge guy or girl ever gave me a hard time. Everyone helped. No one laughed. I got up to 225 (I'm 6'5") and absolutely fell in love with lifting. Fast forward to a few years ago. I'm medically retired after a career of car chases, gun fights, and mayhem. I wondered into a Planet Fitness and tried to work out there a handful of times. I can't lift heavy anymore after 3 back and neck surgeries. It was the oddest, most un fun time ive ever had. What a collection of odd people that end up at Planet Fitness. And why is there candy and crap on the counter for people to eat lol. And whey is there an old dude dressed like a bartender from the old west riding an exercise bike? Why is there an alarm that goes off if anyone makes a grunting noise.......at a gym. The whole vibe was BIZARRE. I've never gone back. Don't even get me started about the 400 pound dude in the locker room walking around with his junk hanging out. Or the homeless folks I got to know near the showers. Plant FAILNESS.

I've also been to Gold's Gym, I've been to other high end facilities. I only went to PF because it was most convenient to where I lived and worked. There are more toxic locations than good ones. Again, I am very purposefully courteous when I work out. I try to be as quiet as possible. I absolutely never take my shirt off and pose. Most of the complaints are true. Again, I was part of the crowd that wasn't their target. My warm up bench was 225. I could easily leg press 900. I played football from ages 15-35. My profile pic is me. Most heavy lifters are nice. The customers in Planet Fitness have no clue what the hell they're doing and most of them are old or fat, but they clean off their equipment like they're supposed to and the gym wasn't packed at all. 4:50 it depends on the muscle group being worked, the strategy to work it (such as burnout hypertrophy), and the weightlifting goal. You can actually build a lot of muscle using low weights over time, but that doesn’t make you that much more proficient necessarily at handling large weights. Perhaps there’s some correlation and having more muscle mass means you can naturally handle a little bit heavier weights, but generally you’re gonna better at what you train at.

People's goals will also differ, if your goal is to get toned then you don't need the same stuff as someone who wants to big "show" muscles or someone who just want to be strong. Also people's bodies are different, a short woman will physiologically not have the same need for heavier weight as a tall man does. I'm 194cm and 20kg's (50lbs) was what I was using after about a month of lifting, and I was by no means ripped at that point, but I have a physiological advantage or disadvantage depending on what your goal is.

PF is the worst experience I've ever had with a gym lmao

Resistance training and/or lighter weights more reps seems to be the best for strength and weight loss. Yes, PF is directed towards beginners but it's also geared towards health, technique and losing weight. If your a body builder then you wouldn't go there anyways and even if you are you can still build with out being a loudmouth. 2 biggest dudes I met did Resistance and 1 was upper security for in town celebrities, the other competed in those wild muscle modeling comps. I prefer Anytime or LA but I continue a PF membership because it's much more relaxed and casual so it's quiet. Side note, most people have headphones so you don't hear grantees anyways

The pizza thing is not over exaggerating, as I used to be fat cravings always existed and the more you eat or see the harder it is to keep fit plus even if you have 1 free day you always have to fight the urge to eat more

I worked at PF when I was studying for my PT cert. PF preys on unfit, unmotivated people. Those who want to get fit, only to sign up and never return. At the PF facility I worked at, they had 42 accounts that were charged over a year "some 3 years" and the people came once or twice. You can not cancel your subscription over phone. You need to come in with an absurd amount of proof who you are. If you owe anything, you can not cancel your subscription, they'll continue charging you.
PF is what Twitter was. "You can't do that. If you do, others may see and adapt. Get out! Banned!"
Edit: After watching further, I see the video addresses this

That one clip where the woman is complaining about the pizza while holding a slice is hilarious and really contextualizes this whole video

I once got kicked out of PF because I was adjusting the seat and let the lever go and it made an earth shattering bang. The workers set off the lunk alarm and asked me to leave. I was astonished the entire time being escorted out.
