The mini fan is more fascinating than the actual drive itself.
It's a Sunon Mighty Mini Fan.
I feel for most users, who aren't going to thrash the drive, they'd have been better off using the exterior of the case for passive cooling.
Yeah. totally
@Muki I wanna install one on my on my rp3+ as an exhaust
Lol same
That retention mechanism is genius. I wish other people would take that into consideration because I'm tired of losing that damn screw
MSI Motherboards have m.2 latches
@@My-Hunt mine doesn't. It's only on high end boards i guess
playing as devil's advocate, if that rubber breaks then it is light's out (Not really as you can use a m.2 even without that screw however it just wouldn't feel safe)
@@ZOCCOK they do send a spare though (I bought one myself a couple of weeks ago)
besides... it's not something you'll open frequently
It looks awesome, I'll definitely get one! Thanks for sharing this Taki :)
Seems like this would be good for phones/tablets with no sdcard slot too
It would be pretty sick if sarge made a version with a passthrough port for power, allowing it to be used on devices with just the one port, in all situations.
@@plows2940 Hubs work. The dock that Valve makes is basically just a normal usb hub that doubles as a stand, and they openly advertise that you don't need to specifically buy theirs to get the additional ports. I've no clue why one would damage it... That makes no sense whatsoever.
wholeheartedly agree!!👌
@@MentalEdge because nintendo idiots think its like there shitty device which actually did manage to get damaged by a third party dock
but how? you might ask its just a usb c dock
yeah its nintendo and they did a super fucky proprietary implimentation of usb C docking that meant that docks which followed the official usb c protocol would cause the switch to brick itself
nintendo of course claiming that those where low quality docks and ignoring the accusations they purposley did this to encourage people to buy there crap
but yeah no you can use any dock with the deck the only thing id say is just pick a reasonable quality one that people have reviewed and confirmed works well on deck mainly just to avoid some shitty cheap dock malfunctioning and breaking your deck but thats not a deck issue thats a dock issue and would fry any device you plugged it into
jsaux belkin plugable valve dell lenovo maybe a couple of decent amazon brands would all be fine
@@plows2940 You can use hubs on the deck no problem. Any USB-C hub designed for a laptop will work without issue on the deck. They should not cause any damage.
I lover their products. I have this and their yellow cable with the lighted ends you are using in this video. Good stuff.
I'm waiting for those 2tb microSD cards to launch this year by Kioxia, aka Toshiba Memory.
I didn't even realize Kioxia did micro SD. I only see 256 GB, though. Not even 512 or 1 TB available.
I have given up on Samsung micro SD, due to failures. I was kind of worried that only Sandisk Extreme seemed to be my viable reliable.
I've never seen a fan that small. Nice Device.
That mini fan is everything i could see the entire video💙
This is the sort of product that i ALWAYS have so much cheers for. It brings what you use to an entirely new level.
i love that form and fan :) also so cute thing.
Definitely something worth investing in for my old nvme drive that came out of my steam deck
Strange, astonishing, marvelous.
This looks like a fascinating device
In the early '90s I paid $400 for a 10MB Hard Drive. Times sure do change.
Remember when you couldn't tie your shoe laces?
I still have some 20 gig hdds from the 90s
lol yeah and 10yrs from now we're going to be laughing about spending $160-$200 on a 2TB M.2 NVME drive. By that time you'll probably be able to buy one for $10-$15.
They should make a "ribbed" full aluminium version with no fan. Direct chassis cooling with the extra ribbing surface area would suffice outside of extended writing periods, where it'd just throttle and be fine
ribbed for your pleasure
@@droopy_eyes they only run a few watts. There are tons of aluminium passive ssd enclosures. The heat only ramps because the drives themselves have like 0 thermal mass.
it's just USB-C 3.1 gen 2 limiting bandwidth to 1GB/s@@droopy_eyes
I'm definitely getting one.
Really cool product.
Be warned that 2230 and 2242 sized SSDs are around 2-2.5x the cost per gigabyte than the standard 2280 sizes.
This works perfect along with a Type C dongle so that you can feed power and use the disk on a steam deck. Plus that tight fit wont let you use this on a steam deck with a case on it.
Would be cool to see them make a version where there's a mini heat-sink. Cause right now they are using the PCB copper layers to act as a heat-dissipation. Very cute drive though!
Kinda neat, thanks for the heads up. 👍
Would love to see USB 3.2x2 with 20Gb/s so at least pci-e 3 speeds, else its pretty nice solution
Cooling is most important to help transfer data that to normal levels. At least it reduce damage or last longer.
this is freaking lit!
Dang that's slick.
We sure are spoiled nowadays if that amount of fan noise is unacceptable.
i really expected this to be $100 this is good
Nice I use a m.2 1tb. But this is impressive 👏
finally! now i can hold the entirety of the wii u library in my pocket without people laughing at me and without my pants falling down! my pc doesnt even explode! this is awesome!!!
I think attachment at 0:54 is indeed the cable that can be used for connection
Thanks so much for sharing. Wonder what the temperature of the ssd is like?
WOW SO COOL
looks so darn cute
wow that thing has such a tiny fan, i didn't even know they made fans like it that small
yea fr
So awesome i want this fan so bad
The Michael Rosen killed me 💀 I didn't expect that.
I know it's some time since you uploaded this, but you have gotten the extension cable. It's the keychain thingy.
I have the Sabrant MINI Rocket drives that are proper M.2 Gen 3 mini drives. Look really neat, cute size but OH BOY do those get toasty even in their all aluminum enclosure. SO... What i did was bought two heat sinks for it and placed it on either side with a high quality thermal pad. TOTALLY did t he trick, Made it bulky but found heat sinks for both in black and silver to match the drives. I conveniently had a PERFECT case for them, I think it was a GO-PRO square case, and it fits them perfectly. SO, I do know what you're talking about.
THIS IS A MUST BUY!!!!😮 When I upgrade my Steamdeck I'm gonna use this expand my storage as external storage I might even Install Windows 11 on it THANK U
This would be great for cloning one drive to another with the Deck as well I take it? Thanks for the share.
my god this fan is so cute!
Cute little fan 🥰
This is adorable
Very cool lil thing tho
Noice! I want one. or few.
Need a noctua silent fan for sure
it would be cool to use that with that Oculink Port on the GPD Win Mini
I'm gonna use this one for my smartphone which sadly does not have a slot for SD-cards. Thus it's a perfect long storage portable solution for me!
Also. We who don't mind the fan noise will look forward to tuning that little fan to insane speeds and performance
Thanx for this video
Contrary to popular belief, SSDs perform better and last longer in higher temps than lower temps as NAND is very similar to battery cells which degrade in cooler temps. Your standard metal sticker M.2s come with are efficient enough to prevent the PCB getting damaged
Yep , it’s actually worse when data is written to the Ssd when it’s colder & then later the drive is stored in a warmer place.
sheesh so the (PCIE 4.0)gen 4 tends to get hotter than (PCIE 3.0)gen 3 will the gen 4 last longer than gen 3?
@demon6937 I think overall it will be the same longevity as NAND technology has really advanced over the years and most brands can outlive a HDD. But it's higher shouldn't throttle speed, you only need to worry about protecting the PCB and surrounding motherboard which the stickers on M.2, or the thin metal cover some come with, or laptops metal holder is sufficient enough to do
@@betablockrr another question would the 10gbps ssd enclosure enough for storage purposes? I've seen 20gbps and 40gbps(thunderbolt) but the enclosure tends to be more expensive.
@demon6937 10Gbps would be perfectly fine, even SATA SSD at 6Gbps is still pretty fast and for most uses like games, updates and file transfer you won't notice much difference unless your transferring 100GB at a time. Also just letting you know that thunderbolt enclosures will say 40Gbps but thunderbolt limits it to 20-22Gbps as it reserves the rest for video signaling
Was looking for something to attach to steam deck looks useful
This I'm buying , thanks man .
Dear Santa...
@@SRC267 ?
This should be good!
I dont care about anyting else, I just want that cute fan! haha
I was considering this little enclosure but after i saw that write speeds were capped out at 1gbps I decided to go with a different option. I needed a case because i plan on transferring data from another external M.2 drive, just a little over 1TB of data. Considering both M.2 drives are pcie gen 4.0 with a read speed around 5,000 mbps and write of 3,000 mbps this enclosure would kind of cripple it's performance. It will be interesting though to see how fast the total file transfer takes since yesterday I backed up about 3TB of data from an SSD to an external HDD and it took almost 10hrs to transfer everything.
man if you compare this tech from the floppy disk of 1990s, dang... speechless
Dang we are in the Mobile PC revolution. Last thing we need is a housing where you can insert a desktop gpu and use it on a steam deck or Ally while on docked.
not worth it on such tiny screens
This would be a great application for solid state cooling that is being developed right now
Really cool device
bought a powerbank from these guys awhile back, Died within 6 months and they refused to offer any kind of repair service or warranty.
This looks super intriguing as a dj that mostly uses thumb drives on cdj 3000s at most clubs, really wish pioneer would add a usb c slot to their players though cus having an adapter seems like a pain
The ultimate thumb drive
this is the next generation of external drives
I'm not sure why it needs the fan at all when idle. Fans that small are hard to make quiet... I am a little surprised they aren't doing something to more directly move air over the top. That is where the controller usually is. That said, the price is lower than expected and it does look cool.
I think AirJet is probably still expensive, but you can have air cooling without fans.
I think... I would try to edit and render videos off this.
You say that but it's a Sunon and they are the gods of well made fans
Very cool product :) Is it possible to buy one on the official site or was it just a crowdfunding? Can't see it on their site.
the campain is not yet started ok.
Crazy that this has better thermal solution than a MBA
Preach
So you’re telling me is a fancy USB stick
There is no heatsink thats why its hot, simply adding an fan wont help much without heatsink, even a low 2mm heatsink with little groves improved thermals alot
the rubber flap cover of the usb c is already breaking, hope shargeek will fix that
Daaaaang storage is crazy now. We've come so fucking far in 10 years alone.
Read and write quite slow but how’s the performance while gaming? Can it handle AAA games? Please make a video while gaming on this. Thanks!
That's a nifty little thing. And very cute (:
Would an SSD drive that's connected via USB still benefit from speed advantage.
Its... so pretty.
its very cute and nice to transfer files!
samsung and all other brands need to learn and copy this
If using for just steam deck is it just plug with a ssd card you put in and good to go. I mean what do you have to do to format for steam deck.thank you
What a missed opportunity to call it *STORAGEGOTCHI* !
future handhelds will and shoud have external like game boy but with small ff like in this vid
I really want to get this but does it have any slow down on triple A games?
The very lanyard is the cable adapter.
What can I use for gaming on a mobile phone to help with graphics other than upgrading the graphics card?
This isn’t even live yet? Bruh how am I supposed to buy this thing
The Ally needed a 2280...
Will this fit the jsaux mod case without using the cable just straight plug on the top?
isn't the side that needs to be cooled (main controller and nand chip) facing up and not touching the thermal pad??
Where did you buy your cable?
does it come with storage or is it just an enclosure ?
which filesystem are you using for all these devices
I mean they already send it with type-c female to male cable(the lanyard accessory) but I don't know I guess sometimes it can escape from attention. 😂
Does it need a fan though? Considering that performance is already 1/4 of the same drive installed internally and that this drive would probably be used only for occasional read/write, I just don’t see a scenario where you would overheat it in real use.
Taki said he has had overheating with other external enclosures. Maybe he moves more data, especially if test related.
It's not how often you use it, but how much data you move when you do. Someone infrequently, might actually be moving more games, than the person who is frequently moving only one or two around.
Kind of like when people get a new phone and they're loading it up with all their apps, their new phone gets hot and they forgot how hot their old phone alkali was, when new doing the big load. I think the less frequent someone does it, the more games they will have completed or tired of and the more they'll want to load up.
What is that cable called, that usb c to usb a short cable?
Thank you!
I mean, It sure looks cool but I am sticking with full size 2280 m.2s for my external storage.
i wonder if i could use it for long video recording like samsung t5
🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤dont own any of those gaming setups, but would love one for my phone
You know what would be a good sell?
give us a standard 2280 enclousure but add a passthru PD feature so that i can strap it behind my steam deck.
is it too thick to plug direct into the side of a macbook pro?
I've never heard of a hard drive needing to be cooled with a fan before.
Big ones do
Well newer pcie m.2s 5.0s need a bit more coolijg compared to old m.2s but a portable one shouldn't need active cooling maybe a small heat sink.
@@snowwolf120 dang I mean I have burned my hand on a USB stick before so I guess it makes sense they need cooling but I've never seen any kind of hard drive, CD, SD card, DVD, floppy disk, etc need cooling.
@@bland9876 wtf are you doing to your usb sticks that they get hot
@@snowwolf120 I see you've never used a USB thumb drive before. They get hot when you use them. Specifically the metat part that goes in the hole.
As someone considering buying an SD card for dual booting Windows on the steam deck, would this be a better option? Would it be ok to play games with this?
Yeah this would be better than running off an SD card, I found that to be very slow, and they're not meant to run an operating system really (no wear levelling / trim support). You could also partition the internal SSD, but this isn't officially supported.
@@liamness not a fan of partitioning the Deck. First I don't know how to do it and could mess up, second I want to keep Steam OS.
My question now is: where/how do you buy that small SSD that you put inside the case? According to Taki, this product is only the case, so i would have to buy the SSD itself, but all I find on Google are long ones that don't fit
@@Diamondhaseo "m.2 2230" is the magical term you need to google. m.2 is the interface, 2230 is the form factor. Same type of SSD that the Steam Deck uses internally.
@@liamness It wouldn't be so much of a big deal if systems weren't so reliant on "virtual memory" (swapping data from ram to disk and back) and you had a different storage device available for temp files.
Just read/write a file now and then isn't quite as bad as constantly reading and writing. The latter would be slow on a spinning disk, but can cause significant wear and tear on flash memory.
@@Diamondhaseo M.2 2230 is the term used for this form factor. Also Amazon has a sale for the Sabrnet version of this card for $100 for a 1TB
