Fantastic
Personally I always thought the one sided phone call was the most brilliant thing because everybody could fill in the blank with their imaginations.
seriously, I really don't know what that confusion here is with his not understanding the playful relationship, and really, we all like to think that special other knows what we likeđđ
Big Bopper (J.P. Richardson) was one of the artists, along with Richie Valens, that died in the Buddy Holly plane crash on what Don Maclean coined as as 'the day the music died' in his hit tribute song 'American Pie'.
THIS. It really was a big loss when those artists went down. It would have been amazing to see what else they could have done had they not crashed.
First of all this is one of the three musicians referred to by the song American Pie by Don McLean who died in a plane crash along with Ritchie Valens and Buddy Holly. On a side note the Big Bopper was only on that plane because he won a coin toss against Waylon Jennings who went on to his own legendary status in the music world. Imagine a historical moment hinging on a coin toss.
Damn I didn't know that story that's crazy
Actually it is Buddy Holly who is associated with the coin flip story (which is an urban legend, it didn't happen that way). Waylon Jennings wasn't yet the country music star he would go on to become later, and was Buddy Holly's bassist in the backing band named "The Crickets". It is also noted that Buddy Holly and Waylon joked with each other in manner that I'm sure haunted Waylon to his dying day. As the story goes they were all touring together during a very cold winter on a bus with a broken heater, doing laundry in ladro-mats and doing their best to stay warm while on the road (A drummer for another band on the tour was treated for frostbite). A chance for three people to take an airplane ride, and not having to spend another night on the bus getting to their next destination, came up and Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper were the ones who got to go. Just before leaving Buddy Holly joked with Waylon saying, "Well, I hope your ol' bus freezes up." With Jennings joking back, "I hope your plane crashes." I'm sure I'm missing some of the details, but Wikipedia has great information on the whole thing.
@@blacksheep_edge1412 I did note that Waylon Jennings was not famous yet, just that he became famous later after he survived the crash by not being on the plane, but Jennings did give up his seat to the Big Bopper who was not originally on the plane, because he had the flu and insisted he needed to be on the plane since as you say the bus's heater was broken. People argue about whether there was a coin flip or not but Ritchie Valens and Buddy Holly were definitely on the plane already but the Big Bopper was the last to get on the plane that night, either way, music lost three legends at night.
@@michaelmorgan3910 It was Ritchie Valens who had the flu, not Richardson. And Dion (of Runaround Sue and The Wanderer fame) was the one who gave up his seat for him. But you are right that three music legends died that night.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Day_the_Music_Died
@@blacksheep_edge1412 Also, side detail, but not that important Waylon was never a member of the Crickets. He played with Holly after Holly left the Crickets in '58.
Everything had to be tongue and cheek in that era, kind of similar to current times. But it seems to imply racy content without saying a thing. Love your stuff and glad to see your channel continue to grow.
Yeah, when he says "pick you up at eight and don't be late but baby ain't got no money hunny" clearly implies they are going up to lovers lane.
Grew up hearing this song. My motherâs cousin dated the big bopper. He would call the house and sound just like that. Lol. So sad that he and Buddy Holly and The others were lost so soon. RIP
Oh if you didn't know that was the GREAT Dick Clark announcing him.
J.P " The big Bopper" Richardson is SO underrated. He has got a lot of humorous songs you should check out.
Unfortunately he died in the plane crash that also killed Buddy Holly and Richie Valens in 1959.
"the day the music died"
the subject of the song "american pie" by don maclean
This was recorded in 1958, (I was 4 years old and loved it) when innuendo was about as explicit as it could get. It also meant our parents would let us listen to it. No filling in the blanks except via the listeners' own imaginations. Actually, I think that's a lot more fun than having it spelled out. It became a different song depending on how old I was with that hearing.
back in 2012, when I was only 21, my 2nd cousin and I took a 5hr road-trip. no radio signal. she was driving her old 2000 Subaru that only had a tape deck, and the only tape she had was a mix of 50s hits including this one. to me, itâs about a girl fully in love with a fella who may not be able to take her out on the town, but she doesnât care. he tells her, âI ainât got no money!â and I imagine she says back, âgood thing there ainât no entry fee for under my skirt!â and then the ubiquitous, âoh honey, you know what I like!â
Ice Cream is obviously what the conversation is about.
His lists exactly what he likes 3 times!
I loved this since I was a child, after my mom introduced me to it. Fun song, from a very different time.
My mom had a cassette tape with this song and I listened to it all the time. Probably not appropriate for a kindergartener to listen to, but of course I didn't understand the meaning.
Heâs a heterosexual male talking to a female. What he likes is universal. LOL He couldnât just pop out with explicit lyrics back then.
What? Are you saying they wouldnât play WAP on national TV?
Just kidding, Iâd rather the big bopper.
@@madtabby66 đđđđ Iâm clutching my pearls in horror for the women back then if they heard WAP on the radio or saw it on TV. LOL
The one I remember was the Cover by Jerry Lee Lewis - My Dad had the vinyl single and My Dad played guitar and sang this song and us kids would laugh so hard!!!! My Dad played mostly Old Country songs & Elvis
Love this song. so cute and catchy. Takes me back in time.
He explains what he likes in every chorus. He loves this girl who clearly wears the pants in the relationship
A story I've heard is that country superstar George Jones's first #1 hit was a Big Bopper song called 'White Lightning'.
Classic! I love this song.
You kill me...What's he talking about on the phone? đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
But . . . But . . . But. How many of us have had THAT phone call from our SO.
He said everything in the song that he likes! Where were you?
Interesting reaction. As for what he "Likes" - it's : Chantilly lace and a pretty face And a pony tail hangin'
down A wiggle in her walk and a giggle in her talk
The big bopper was a radio dj. He died with buddy Holly and Ritchie valence in the infomence airplane crash. The other person who won the coin toss between Richie and another artest was Waylon Jennings.
No complaints here. I grew up listening to this song. It's fun to dance to!
Of course the Big Bopper was on the plane that went down with Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens The Day the Music Died February 3rd 1959 react to Buddy Holly and the Crickets all the English Invasion bands like the crickets that's what the name Beatles came from
February 3 1959. The day the music died . Ritchie Valens 17, Buddy Holly 22 and the Big Bopper 28 all died in the plane crash.
Futurama the professor stuck in the 50s "Oh Lord! We'll have to endure the horrible music of the Big Bopper, and then the terrible tragedy of his death."
This was my favorite song when I was little! đ€Łđ€·ââïž
I think her side of the conversation is left to our imagination.
There's an old very popular saying Loose as a Goose which seems to come from the children's story Chicken Little in 1840
You reminded me that I'm more familiar with the phrase loosey goosey.
Wow the big bopper is one of the last musicians i expected to see on any react video.
Thats why i love this channel.
He was one of the big three in 'the day the music died', though.
Awesome video bro đđ»
Him and Ritchie Valens were on their prime and had a bright future that was sadly cut short from a plane crash that snuffed their lives. I could only think of what their careers ahead would have been liked if they had survived that flight.
Love this song personally I prefer the version by Jerry lee Lewis though I think the only lyrical difference is he starts it off by saying "Now this is the killer speaking." Haha
How about this one, my friend... Charley Pride "Is Anybody Goin' To San Antone?"
She calls him. It's a booty call.
It is wild when you think about it. This was probably considered to be pushing the edge in those days.
Remember being 28...no video games...no cell phones...what did you see on "Happy Days"? What is a 28 year Old Guy wanting? Life Insurance? A New Car? Perhaps a JOb....I said enough
He likes Chantilly lace, and a pretty face, etc. He likes pretty women in lace.
Chantilly Lace is a handmade outerwear lace made exclusively in Chantilly France. It's not something that a typical American Woman can casually afford even today. This is effectively the Big Bopper's version of "Uptown Girl" by Billy Joel, and the reason why the Big Bopper was always broke.
You know what he likes.
It was the -50s.. he couldnt let us hear it ALL! Up to you to decide just -WHAT HE LIKES!đ„Žđ„Žđ€Łđ€Łchantily lace, a pretty face, etc. But just WHAT does it mean? Maybe just that? Or maybe ?just a cute little song. For me,just kinda funny!đ€Łit was the 50s! So. You decide. .. lov ur chann, and your reactions, dan, northern florida -2/08/22
The day the music died!...good book.
First time I heard this I was in 5th grade. Teacher let us do something to use up the time while we were waiting for the bus in the afternoon. Someone brought in this record. It was fun and I don't think it had a deep meaning.
He likes Chantilly lace and a pretty face, etc.
1950's, everything can be implied, NOTHING can actually be said.
Explain? Leaving to the imagination is the best part
if at your age, you don't know what he likes, i'm a long necked goose...... lol
Not a lot of substance to the song, but fun to listen to. Always enjoy hearing it.
The day the music died February 3, 1959...plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens...đđđ
Well for 1958 you couldn't get that graphic like they would today in music there was a lot of respect rock and roll was considered the devil's music back then
This must have still been around in the early 70's. I remember liking it.
In the '70s you would have been listening to the Jerry Lee Lewis cover.
@@krahnjp no it was the Big Bopper for sure. My parents must of had it I'm guessing.
@@stevemchale9775 it was on the American Graffiti soundtrack in the 70s, we discovered it in the 80s from my parents copy of it.
Definitely should react to some Ritchie Valens, Come on let's go, Donna , We belong together and La Bamba are really good. Both Ritchie and The Big Booper were really big at the same time but unfortunately both died in the same plane crash
Along with Buddy Holly. "The Day the Music Died."
I believe Waylon Jennings gave up his seat to the Big Bopper? Can't remember exactly
â@@clydehuset7738 Yeah, Waylon Jennings was Buddy Holly's bassist at the time. He gave up his seat for Big Bopper, because Bopper had the flu. Holly's guitarist and Ritchie Valens flipped a coin for the other seat and Valens "won"
@@krahnjp Dion (of Runaround Sue and The Wanderer fame) said that he was offered a chance to travel with Holly, Richardson (aka the Big Bopper) and Valens, but turned it down because it was too expensive. Also, the coin flip was done between himself and Valens (who was the one with the Flu). Dion also stated that none of Holly's band mates were involved in the discussion it was only the 4 of them, backstage, while another singer was performing that night. It was Buddy Holly who called them together too.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Day_the_Music_Died
@@blacksheep_edge1412 yeah, Dion's story is impossible to believe. Either he is lying/misremembering, or Waylon Jennings, Tommy Allsup, and multiple other witnesses all lied. But all their stories match up. Only Dion's is different. And his doesn't make any sense at all. If Valens was the one sick, then why would he flip him for a seat I stead of Bopper? At the time, Oh Donna was number three in the country, and Bopper had just spent 22 weeks in the top 40, with one of the most played songs in America. Dion had never cracked the top 20 at that time. If he was right, and Holly said the money makers should fly. Dion would not have been considered. He was purely the opening act.
I know the story, but almost no one believes Dion's version.
He also didn't tell his version until 2009. Everyone else has been telling the other version, since, basically the day it happened. I think he was just a seventy year old man misremembering events from fifty years prior.
He likes the attributes of the woman on the phone; her face, her hair, her voice and her what she wears. The other side of the conversation is left to the listenerâs imagination and could be racy if oneâs mind is in the gutter.
no money and she still wants him to pick her up .... you know what's up.
You should do Richie Valens La Bomba...
It's sad that he died in a plane crash along with Buddy Holly and the other young man
He couldnât say what he liked.
Remember it was the 50s lots of hinting
Iâm trying to remember the artist that sang about his 6â lollipop
Please do âyer so badâ by Tom petty!
I would like to suggest listening to Patsy Cline.
It's the Big Bopper, the goal was to put on show and entertain the crowd. He was loved in his day.
Hee hee.Thats was silly.Silly is fun though.
why are you reading something that is not there this is just fun
Context in the chorus bro...
Now you are a grown ass man what could a lady say to get you to spend your money and keep it clean.
You could hint at things but you couldn't spell them out back then. The up side is that the listener could project their own likes onto it and the singer had plausible deniability if challenged.
He's flirting with his girl on the phone and saying what he likes about her in the verses.
Seriously!? You don't know what the rest of the Convo is about? Pretty sure I do!
Big Bopper: "We were musicians then..."
Buddy Holly: "I was, you just kinda talk-sang"
Big Bopper: "I was accidentally creating hip-hop!"
Red Mantle & Dragoon from the Venture Bros.
Sousaphone! Your grandfather played sousaphone! It was awful. Everyday he would make us rehearse. This band made up of kidnapped musicians and this old man with his ridiculous sousaphone!
Use your imagination.
Back then you had to hint and lots of sliding around true words. Censors would have killed it otherwise. Nothing like today's everything goes.
Big Bopper was great but I do prefer Jerry Lee Lewis version.
As to what he's talking about use you imagination what a teen boy and girl would be talking about.
Seriously? You can't figure out what he's talking about?
Jerry lee Lewis version is better. no one beats the killer
YOU TALK TO MUCH
Bro...the Mystery is the whole point...
This should be good đ
