  • Nikon 200-400 mm ED VR II Real World Review on the Nikon D810 by Matt Irwin. In this review I show how hand held this lens can be used at night, at 1/8 of a second and still get sharp focus. This is truly a great lens.

Matt, thanks for the awesome and insightful video. I own the same lens myself, plus a 1.4x TC-14III teleconverter. I got back from Kenya last summer (2019) with some awesome wildlife photographs. I use the lens with D850s, but I still need to perfect the higher iso shots. Anyway, you are inspirational. My best, Ian.

Matt, I've got one of these and am always amazed at how easy it is to hand-hold at silly shutter speeds. I've shot at night, indoors, in pouring rain, and the freezing cold - in fact in some of the worst conditions and lowest light you can imagine whilst hand-holding it and the only thing better would have to be the 180-400mm. Trouble is that it's really really expensive - too much I think for the extra 20mm and a built-in TC. Having splashed out on the new Nikon Z9 today I'm thinking that it will be even better on this body. Time will tell. Keep up the brilliant channel.

This was very entertaining. Shooting with it at night, never crossed my mind. Hand holding it throughout the video, I can feel the pain. Good strap helps with support when used like a tensioned rifle sling. I replaced mine with a swiveled Domke strap, but a real rifle sling might just work better.

Cheers Hiyou, yeah I love pushing my gear to the limits, and using a lens like that in that situation is normally not even considered. I am trying to show that we can push ourselves and our gear so much further. Take risks, and then fun things happen. Thanks so much for your thoughts on straps, and yes I will do that for sure. Cheers Matt

Thanks Darren, I purchased this lens 8 years after I first borrowed it from Nikon under the NPS scheme, of trying out lenses, and that is when I first worked out you could use it at night handheld, with the legendary Nikon D3. At that time I could not really justify it or afford it. In 2014 I did a lot of work with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, where reach (mm) and speed (wide apertures) were critical, so I shelled out. The lens still looks new 2 years later as it does not get out too often. When I do use it, I love it though, and it really is great to have that as part of the kit.

Awesome video and lens. I would be seriously tempted to buy one of these secondhand, however, as I am now 72, my arms aren't as strong as they used to be and would really struggle with the weight of this beautiful beastie. Thank goodness Nikon have introduced the Z100-400 to go with the Z9 I have on order!!!

Yesterday i was in Germany on a Nikon second hand sale and there were Nikon official people demonstrating the new version of this lens with the 1,4X extender on a D5 and i was realy blown away looking threw the viewfinder.UNBELIEVEBLE IQ even wide open and the 1,4 extender thrown in.The VR must have a least 5 stops because the picture in the viewfinder didnt move at al even in the 400mm + 1,4X extender mode. Also beatifull bokey. Now i understand why this new 180-400mm 1,4X version kost 12000 euros.High Time to rob a bank hahaha.

helthuismartin thanks for you insight. I would love to get this lens, unfortunately it is $19,000 here in Australia, so it might be a little while before I go for it. Although I could trade in my 200-400 and I might get $6000-$7000 still very expensive. I love the built in teleconverter. Truly an outstanding lens, for sometime in the future. :) Cheers Matt

Nice review, I use the 200-500 f/5.6 for wildlife & am considering changing for the 200-400 just to gain that 1 stop. Question is "Is it worth it" ??? Faster AF would certainly be a benefit :-)

@@MattIrwinPhotography Hi Matt, currently using a D500, and an older D3x.
The D3x has its uses for me providing I can get in tight on the subject and it is static but the D500 is simply unbeatable. I also use a Nikon 600 f/4 but have to plan carefully when I take this out as its not a lens you can wonder about with!!

just reading the reviews 2 years on , I used to have one of these , until some b@@@ stole it at a concert
the 200-500 is very good for wildlife its all about reach but 600. even better 400mm is a bit short you will only end up sticking a doubler on it or buying a d500 , wait till the new z 100 -600 comes out that will be amazing, but for ease of use the 80-400 is more useful or the 200-500. saves luging a monopod round

    Hi Matt
I am thinking of getting a super telephoto lens. But due to budget issue, I am thinking getting the version one second hand. Will it be worth the money to get a really old version one? or save up more for the Version two second hand?
    Regards

    • @MattIrwinPhotography
      @MattIrwinPhotography  Před 7 lety +1

Hi C SingSing great to hear from you and thanks for the question. Second hand lenses is a really difficult space to comment on. If the lens was in mint condition it would be pretty amazing and a good buy I suspect. The issue is lenses are very sensitive highly calibrated tools, and the longer they are around the higher probability something may have happened to them. So the newer the better in most cases but not all. I have had lenses professionally serviced and still I don't think they ever return to factory condition. These lenses zoom and are huge and heavy with lots of moving parts. If you are a pro, sometimes it is just not worth not having gear that might let you down, which happened to me just a few weeks ago. Also just to add complication to the answer, there is a rumour that version 3 of this lens will come out this year. If that is the case the version 2 will drop in price. So this may be a great time to get your hand on an amazing lens. The main differences between the lenses will be VR capabilities, coatings on the lenses, the older the worse they are at solving some of the problems with digital cameras, like chromatic aberration. But the differences would be minor under most conditions. And if you can get a version 1 for 20%-30% of a new version 2 that would be amazing. How much can you get it for? Price is always a great decider on these things.

Hi Matt, Thanks for your detailed reply
First of all I am not a professional, thus I know that getting this lens definitely an over kill for me.
In the 2nd hand market, the Version 1 is offered to me at SGD4000 to SGD5000.
While the the Version 2 is offered at SGD5500.
In Singapore here, these 2 lens are super rare to find in the 2nd hand market.
The shops in Singapore sell a brand now version 2 at SGD9500+
Basically, I think if i get a 300mm FL will solve my situation of not enough reach.
Below are some of my shootings. Do have a look when you are free.

Hey C SingSing, love the pics great work, Jessica and Jackie look great. So there is another options that I was looking at just a few weeks ago when it was on sale here, to have a long range lens in the back for emergencies, as the 200-400 is so big. And it is this one www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1175034-REG/nikon_af_s_nikkor_200_500mm_f_5_6e.html , it is not as fast, but with VR and ever increasing ISO's I think it could be the go. It won't be as tough, worth looking at. Amazing the 200-400 v1 is still that price, they hold them well in Singapore. So have a look at this and let me know what you think. Comes with a warranty, is a pretty new design so better for the latest digital cameras. Would love to hear what you think of it. Cheers Matt PS and you can't beat it on price.

      HI Matt
I have read many reviews on Nikon 200500. This is the lens that can give me the results I needed. However, I am more comfortable on the professional line lens.
The lens that I am thinking are the 200400, sigma 150300 and the nikon 300 F4E.
Lastly, you have mentioned that the 200-400 v1 'is still that price'. So i will assume that the 200400 version 1 does not worth the price tag of SGD4000?
      Regards
