  • A video I made this morning when I was driving onto MV Alfred at Ardrossan, going to Brodick on the Isle of Arran.
The ferry departed at 11:05 and arrived at Brodick at noon.
This vessel is new to the Calmac Arran service between Ardrossan and Brodick and many questions are being asked, one of them being...what happens when you drive your car onto the ferry. Do you have to reverse on, or turn the car on the deck etc?
    Here are the answers.
The next video shows a 'wakround' of the vessel, including all the passenger accomodation

Dave, this is very kind of you. Many folk are familiar with this and similar ferries, but for those drivers and passengers who are a little unsure, the fact you have gone to the trouble of making such a thoughtful and helpful video is very reassuring. Thank you. Best wishes, Russ, Sannox.

Thanks. I enjoy making these wee videos and to be honest, island life is all about the ferries, like it or not, and I like to celebrate the difference. I accept the joys of island life so must also accept the difficulties. I am a Calmac fan for that reason, regardless of how others perceive the performance of the company.

I’m more used to MV Finlaggan as you drive on at the front and come out at the back without turning around, you can just go forward in a straight line through Finlaggan, or vice versa, get on at the back and come off at the front, works both ways as a ro-ro vessel but it’s different with MV Alfred as he is a ro-pax ferry so you can’t get in and off at both ends, so instead you have to go in and turn around to come back out the same way which is basically when you said a ‘dual carriageway’ style of boarding.

In typical fashion I watched your tour of the vessel and disembarkation video first! Then my wife pointed out that the cars were facing the ramp and wanted to know whether we had to reverse on. So thanks for this ultra clear explanation of boarding.
