  • In this episode we explore an abandoned off grid cabin we found in the woods on the west side of our island. At one time it was regarded as the most beautiful off grid cabin on the lake. Come along with us as we search the surrounding area and discover even more interesting surprises that point to a whole community living on this off grid island wilderness!
    This island has been abandoned for decades now and the surrounding woods have reclaimed much of this former homestead. It is a wonder to imagine what life must have been like back in the days when the sounds of life and laughter reverberated through the trees...
    This all feels like an archeological expedition! Why did the former inhabitants leave? Discover clues which will explain the reason that forced the former inhabitants to leave their wonderful off grid cabin lifestyle on this beautiful island paradise.

    The Land Rover came over on ice.
    Drove over the lake in winter to bring over all the stuff for the cabins like the fridge, stove, windows, generator.
    Generator probably powered all the log cabins

      That does makes sense. One of the children (in her 70s) told us that her Dad brought it over on a raft. So interesting to see how they must have lived there all those years ago.

    Vehicle looks like an old 4 wheel drive "International Harvester Scout" from the early 1960's...I was an owner to one back in 1977 same exact look. Was a gem of a vehicle for winters in good ole central North Dakota. My guess this gem was driven there over the frozen ice and the island became it's final resting place. Thanks for sharing your adventures and God bless you in your endeavors...be careful and enjoy❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

      Hello there! Welcome to our channel, we are so happy you've joined us in this amazing journey! We didn't actually know what the vehicle was but we are looking for the serial number to fund it for sure. Lots of people are calling it a series 1 Land Rover. According to one of the children of the original island owner, she said her Dad brought it over on a raft. Our conversation is on one of the first episodes in Season 1. It was wonderful to speak to her, she was so lovely. Thank you for watching 💚

    Before you burn all of that, you should go through and take whatever boards and items you can use again somewhere down the line and whatever’s rotten burn it. And if you’re gonna live on that island and build on that island, I’d recommend bringing a camper out on a barge and setting it up there so you have someplace to live while you’re building.

    • @mywildholm
      @mywildholm  Před měsícem

      You are correct, of course. A tent is just not going to do. A small camper would be nice, but we would need roads and some way to get it off the barge. We're just not there yet, but we can dream! Glad to have you along for the ride... -Ryan

The old saying " you only live once " that's incorrect, we only die once . We live everyday ❤. I just began season 2 of your journey, thank you for sharing your special time with us. I'm 61 , I'm from the Chicago area, I just bought a 26' travel trailer and I plan to be be completely off-grid. Going to travel from Alaska to Mexico, cut across Canada and head Southeast down to Key West Florida. I hope perhaps I can meet you folks . We can share a campfire. I'm quite the accomplished campfire chef 😂. Looking forward to Season 2. I retire September of 2025 . I'll be 63 . Just my pup and I . God bless you and keep you safe on your journey's.

Cooking on the deck at night for canning and eating would be GREAT THERE and listen to the LOONS then !!! It would be a Kitchen outside for a Lady in those days and now !!!

      @@mywildholm Planning on selling the car. It should be as untouched as possible.Trying to fix it up will probably lower the value. Originality in every detail is what they want. It can be completely renovated but it will probably cost more then the finally value. Takes a shop and lot of know-how. I'm just saying it's a lot of job. Then you can do whatever you want off course, making it an adventure in itself, working on it, selfmade is great feeling, sitting there it's doomed, or make a flowerstand of it or whatever. Each project on this island is many years of work. Seems you got the spirit. If it was me loosing that nail, I'd probably go home for a while, getting doctor and painkillers. Me, not returning to adventurous stuff in wilderness next day. Only seen this video. When cleaning up, try to save old metal stuff and do some documentation, my advice only. Working shoes and gloves. I loved this episode! I did the same thing to my toenail moving the couch one time. It hurts so bad when you do that!!!! You can't rip it off because the cuticle is holding it on. That is what I tried first! I ended up cutting mine back real short and then I soaked in an epsom salts every morning and night. A new toenail eventually grew and it healed within a week. I have found that bear are more scared of me than I am them when I see them in the woods. I just stand still and they'll leave. I'm not sure which plant you were wondering about it looked like the start of some stinking Benjamin flowers and the other looked like princess pine to me. I bet the family on the island had a bunch of cabins that they rented out for their income. Be careful walking around the cabins in case there's an old well there somewhere. I have never seen a black fox before that was so awesome! 👍♥️😁

      @@mywildholm I’ve driven land rovers since I passed my test at 17 still drive them today (currently a Discovery sport) I live in the English countryside. “Defenders” as they’ve been known for the last 20 odd years are my absolute favourite vehicles series 1 were first made in 1948, they’re iconic now. Without seeing it properly obviously I’m not 100% certain what series it actually is. The hard top roof makes would age it between 1958 - 1969 series 2 or 1A after 1970 they’re series 3.. which ever it would still be classed as classic. They’re built for rugged terrain, brilliant workhorses so to speak, so I’m surprised to see one but not, if that makes sense, who ever brought it there knew what they were doing, because it would have made short work of the terrain you are in, when running that is 😂. That vehicle is probably how the generator was put where it is. (Love the videos btw)

      @@mywildholm well, if all the parts are there, diesel engines will run a million miles or more. The electric generator on the other hand may have blown seals from being exposed to rain which could have gotten in the motor and froze. And we all know how ice expands and breaks things.
