Chris Makes Meatballs | From the Home Kitchen | Bon Appétit

- čas přidán 16. 07. 2024
- Join Chris Morocco back in his home kitchen as he makes weeknight meatballs. We stripped meatballs down to the most essential elements, creating a recipe that is easy enough for a postwork dinner. Making larger meatballs means they actually have time to properly brown in the oven without overcooking.

@@yungjoemighty879 Actually, im not, just watched the first 2 minutes cos i saw a comment that said he addressed the issue in a way. Im just lingering to see the comments.
@yungjoemighty unfortunately it's a double edged sword. Watching videos with Chris in them is supporting conde nast but by watching this video you are also supporting Chris who isn't the problem that is conde nast.
Yeah but many of the white superior staff played a huge role in the disparities happening at ba both in the test kitchen and on the videos including pay and overall treatment. Chris’s silence (and later brad’s) have spoken volumes about their priorities. As a former fan I’m so so disappointed in Chris’s lack of solidarity and active role in glossing over ba’s unfair treatment of bipoc employees.
@@laurengottlieb6354 I do have to agree with this tho, compared to the other cast members, they were relatively silent. Both have actually spoken out, Chris said more than Brad did (which was disappointing because it was lack-luster), not that it made it any better. I do, in a way, understand their reason for staying on video, they do have young children and video appearance is added income for both. Understanding their possible reasons for staying doesn't mean I'm not disappointed. I'm just pointing out that the ultimate culprit for the oppression at BA and Conde Nast is top management. They are the ones who can change the system and if they don't, nothing will happen. Let's just hope that despite this, Chris and everyone else continues to fight for change.

Gaby is staying as test kitchen manager but she won’t be appearing in videos. It seemed to me that she was completely out of all the drama, but was forced into a negotiation to appear on videos that she didn’t take to avoid issues. When she announced that on Instagram, I understood that the way Sohla did things might have not been fair to some cast members that had nothing to do with this payments issues.

I cannot begin to describe how incredibly disappointed I am. Chris was deeply involved with hiring and pay disparity issues that caused so many people to leave BA. I'm not disappointed that he stayed, truthfully, I really couldn't care about that; I'm disappointed that he didn't address the issue when it was fresh, and I'm disappointed that he didn't address the issue now. BA failed completely to address this issue the right way. Nothing that we saw on screen was problematic, except maybe Adam. Just. Because. You're not. White. Let that sink in and you tell me why is not a good thing at all.
@@thethingthatshouldnotbe7221
Well great that you want to educate yourself. I respect that.
The thing with racism against black people specifically is that it’s a construct of white people, created around the 17th and 18th century, where the white people decided they are of more value, so they could enslave people of darker skintones.
That thought is still present. The ideal beauty standard is someone with light skin, blue eyes, blonde hair. Anything different and you‘re automatically less than.
Of course there are the big things, that are not acceptable anymore, but racism itself is more than calling someone any racial slur.
In BAs case they paid people of different races less. So you have white privilege: white creators got paid more, not because of there experience, but solely because of there „marketable“ white skin, names etc.
Then you have microaggressions. For example me getting asked, is I can’t marry a white dude, because people are too lazy to learn how to pronounce my name. All wrapped in a joke, but still hurtful.
All in all it is a system which degrades, undermines and hurts people who point blank just look different.
So I want to ask you: what is good about it?

chris isn't the guy to blame for all this tho. The people behind the scenes should be speaking up and going in front of the camera instead of being like "hey look, we have POC execs finally!" and "hey look, it's chris, and meatballs, you like those, right?"
Always here for Chris, never forget what BA has done, but I will watch this man make meatballs for his family all the time.
BA is back baby! so glad to see Chris (and Brad) making videos again.
The reason I loved watching ba videos was because they seemed so inclusive. I loved watching Rick make things. I believed that people were compensated for what they actually brought to the table - what were their actual knowledge and skills. I naïvely assumed that's such a large multinational would, of course, treat its employees with respect. I assumed the same things of the US government. How could the presidency get away with mistreating and misrepresenting on such a huge scale?! Sadly, that's what this world does. The most powerful have the most money and do very much what they please.
And Sohla was amazing. She was so obviously incredibly competent at everything she did and a pleasure to watch. The whole thing makes me very sad.
My feelings are so mixed about this I feel like a meatball.
😭😭😂
The most relatable comment
No offense, but I think this comment is a little bit flavorless... I think it just needs a bit more meat on the bones.
Good to see Chris again. Hope he's well.
BA really has no soul. I guess they tricked us into believing that they did. That they cared about food and that they cared about people. But they don't. They care about money and that's it. I feel bad for the employees being used in this situation. It must feel awful being manipulated into pretending everything is fine, when everyone knows it's not.
Most of us never watched for any corporate loyalty. We just liked the on screen personalities. Screw BA, I was here for Brad's antics, Claire decent into madness reverse-engineering popular snacks, and the rest of the crew just having fun.
@@NWinnVR trueeee i never cared about BA the channel. I care about the personality of the crew members. And the viewership will go to wherever they go
Is it wrong though when people fall for that? Everything especially in this digital era is about money. And yes, that means us sitting in the other side of the monitor. If you think people who don’t know you care about you. Oh well.
I think Chris was the absolute favorite on Bon Appetit for a lot of us. This is deeply disappointing.
Yes I headed straight to reading the comments but I also noticed Chris's kitchen looks different..
It’s a studio.
@@Rena-ej7vv it’s not a studio its his house
@@adeallapashtica9003 3:28 “Are you just raiding the pantry at this studio?” It’s a studio.
He says right in the beginning that they rented a studio. It's a studio.
@@arg.sherilyn Naaaa, his house just grew, it put on about a hundred sq ft of covid weight.
My father died in July, and the BA videos combined my two favorite things... comedy and food. Those videos got me through so much over quarantine in the spring (when I first stumbled upon BA) and my father’s death this summer. I’m so happy to see Chris back but I miss the old crew so much.
It’s like my favorite sitcom was recasted and it just doesn’t feel the same 😢.
Agreed. And though I know it doesn’t count for much, I’m really sorry, and my heart is with you. ❤️
“They really wanted to hire someone Black, which I know you’re not allowed to say legally, out loud,” she says. “And Chris Morocco [the director of the Test Kitchen] directly told me he didn’t like how quickly I moved up, so he wanted to make sure this person would never be allowed to develop recipes.” As she puts it, management didn’t want another “Sohla problem.” (Through a Condé Nast spokesperson, Morocco stated that this conversation did not happen.) Where was this info?? Solha is with Babish now and I'm living for it (Thankfully a lot of BA ppl are on their own now, and I can't wait)
@@emma_clare Thank you! My husband and i were thinking the same thing about Sohla. She used this whole racial inequality to her advantage and only said something because she knew people would jump on her train. I feel like at this point she's milking it and still wants to hold on to her victim mentality because it's what works right now. Even though she could have said something before.
@@emma_clare and you're obviously white
@Hannibal B which ones? I just see yall being desillusional
He said she said. Sorry but she has no ground to stand on and I would bet he legally does.
"Who can live like this??", Chris asks in shock as he practices the only way I've ever dealt with whole parm...
Lots of others have already said everything in the comments that I agree with so I'll say just one thing.
I have missed Chris and the Morocco strong opinions (snark)! I'm glad to see him.
Chris: I've missed this
All of us: We've missed you!
Sounds about white!
Bon Appetit really has thick skin
So what I learned they do read the comments

CHRIS CAN MAKE MEATBALLS OUTTA DEEEEZ NUTS!!!!
Chris is hilarious. "THEY DONT GO ANYWHERE?!?!?"
This is a fantastic and helpful recipe and a fun video. I didn't realize how much I missed Chris.
I'm just so happy to see Chris. Sometimes during Covid its nice to see some familiarity. And I believe they will make positive changes, there's always growing pains.
nice to see Bon Apppetit back again - thanks!
The cast was the heart of the channel. Completely stabbing the back of the heart and Getting rid of the heart of the channel means one thing and the more time has gone on it’s been proven even more, this channel is now an overly produced cold dead channel. And I have to say I only wish those who have gone off to have their own channels success.
If I'm not wrong, all the content creators that stayed went on video strike until pay was equalised. So seeing a video makes me hopeful
The BIPOC who weren’t paid fairly and quit doing videos. CNE has made no changes. They hired new BIPOC and are probably paying them pennies.
@@kelsey4493 do you know their salaries?
All the BIPOC staff (and others) quit because no meaningful changes were being made. As a white man Chris was on a hugely lucrative contract so presumably has decided to go with money over principles.
@@Zveebo how dare he not quit his well paying job in the middle of a pandemic?
@@Zveebo So nice to hear you're outraged on behalf of people of color when you know absolutely none of the facts.
It's so nice to see Chris again. This is what I needed today.
"I needed a recipe that I could do REALLY fast on a weekday so we're going to go ahead and make our own marinara sauce."
like the comment that i read earlier,
the magic is truly gone.
Chris is in the house my day has been made :D
Chris is addressing issues better than the other video--oops, i meant commercial--ba released earlier today. Which is kind of sad because he danced around the issue and wasn't explicit in anything he said.
Shouldnt be on his shoulders to address. He is a victim in this too. He is a great guy who was just doing his job and bringing joy to people and spreading a love of cooking. He shouldnt be in the position of having to address the nastiness of the people signing his paycheck.
The preciousness, fake attempts at casual sincerity, and slapdash segway to meatballs, no thanks y’all. Peace out.
Hosting the first video for BA to come back after what happened? Man. That must suck. I understand why anyone wouldn't want to leave a good-paying job in these times. I also understand that, after everything, one may look at the changes and think that the brand is moving in the right direction and choose to stay onboard to see the changes through.
In any case, I hope this is a good sign for what's to come, even if Chris looks battered and shaken to be in front of the camera again.
