With all due respect, while he might have been an expert 20 years ago, but speaking about China based on their limitations of 20 years ago is not a realistic view of today. Furthermore, as he himself admitted, he's speaking based on Western views, which have been based on fabricated disinformation all across the globe, especially with China.
So, I would suggest to the Straits Times, unless you have become a mouthpiece of the West, then please interview someone who's an actual expert of both the Western and Eastern world, someone who would provide realistic views of the world today, and not a biased one.

ST, always has been the mouthpiece but more pronounced last few years . Just look at the op-ed pieces and commentaries on China are mostly sourced from western news media renowned for its bias. The worst are always featured- Bloomberg, NYT, FT, WSL etc. News agencies Reuters and AFP are no longer impartial like before. Even anti-China think tanks like Hudson Institute are given a platform. ST own China correspondents (one in particular) write like western correspondents, picking faults and highlighting the negatives.

Agree 💯%! The problem with self-proclaimed Western "experts" is that they are actually quite ignorant when it comes to China. Edward Luttwark is no exception. These Western ostriches should get their heads out of Western education, culture, mentality and philosophy to fully understand China! It is foolish naivety that these Westerners think that they know and understand how Chinese think without studying Chinese language, culture, philosophy and way of life!

Not true. Today China still cannot build military jet engines with the required efficiency and durability needed for a war.
As far as China navel ships, the majority of them are converted civilian craft. True; the number of the China navy ships surpasses that of the US, but they are of very little military advantage.
China needs to cross the Taiwan Strait to invade Taiwan. The ships during that invasion will be extremely vulnerable to attack, and not enough will survive to be a threat to Taiwan.

But India isn't stupid, she is also feigning her endearment for the US because she wants "something" from US.

      - “IMO, 21st century China will NOT resort to kinetic war. Using it's economic might can crush any nation in the world.”
Economic power of a country doesn’t exist in isolation from other countries, no matter the size of the country. All countries are dependent on other countries, and China actually more so than many others. As a result it can’t start to “crush” other countries without hurting itself, especially if those other countries approach the matter the most sensible and easy way, and confront the bullying country together.
In other words, this is not a China vs USA thing, and China’s economic influence dwarfs in comparison to the coalition countries which China has caused to form with Xi Jinping’s expansionist ambitions. Anyone who thinks that China can “crush” economically the coalition of India, USA, Japan, Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines and growingly also the European Union is delusional. Those countries together have so much economic power and influence that rest of the world will follow their wishes, not China’s, if they have to choose (and in a tight situation, many of them would have to).

Trade is two way, you stop exporting from China, your own countries will face both shortage and inflation. My guess as non-expert, the US sanction on China will be ignored by most of the countries and spelt clearly the death of US dollar hegemony. I am shocked at the number of ad hominem attacks on Edward Luttwak in the comments. Rather than criticizing the points he brought up, the critics are simply dismissing everything he says because they think he is too old or because he is an American.
Personally, I have not heard of him before, but I am very intrigued by the points he made as many of them are novel to me that I have never considered. I just wiki him, and apparently, his book "Strategy: The Logic of War and Peace" has even been translated into Chinese and Russian and is used as a textbook in many war colleges around the world. I think I will read this and some of his other acclaimed books as I find his perspectives on war to be very compelling.

Luttwak is wrong on many aspects.... e.g. China won't fight a conventional war with India because of their one-child policy, this is his assumption (not fact).
Regarding food, soya is feedstock and meat is less important than rice, which China is growing in abundant with high yielding hybrid rice, also salt-water rice, mountain rice, etc.: besides China's population is decreasing and one child policy is dead.
Submarines have their own problems and limitations too.
Nuclear weapons are a waste of money, tell that to the North Koreans. If not for it, North Korea would most likely go the way of Iraq.
In war, many sacrifices will be made. Many things that are not necessities will be sacrificed, people will eat less, use less oil, not eat meat, forego luxuries, wear more warm clothing during winter, walk or cycle, no vacations, etc.

The term nuclear war needs to be fine-tuned in today's understanding. There's strategic nuclear and tactical nuclear weapons. What's the difference? For easy understanding, strategic nuclear is 100 times greater than the Hiroshima bomb. Tactical nuclear is 100 times lesser. When Medvedev said Russia will nuke Ukraine if it loses the war, he's talking tactical weapons. Even so, it'll be opening the pandora's box if Russia does so. China is clearly not in favour of Russia nuking Ukraine. It's been publicly stated.
