It's also probably a big reason why he's been able to perform at the top for so long, despite playing a lot of football as a teenager. The more physical strain on the body the more vulnerable it is to injury. And his teams are happy to defend with 10 players, because Messi's good enough that it's worth the sacrifice to ensure he remains fit. Similar story with Ronaldo, Mbappe and Neymar.
That's why he couldn't win UCL withour superstars, it wasn't enough to defend with 10 then

Me was this kind of player back to school, lol. I would just score clutch goals or lay down important assists, also clutches crossing too, lol. And when my teammates told me to run, I would hesitate because I wanted to not only conserve energy but also watched what was going on. Nah the Ai is like any other human but it learns quicker and Messi is on a similar level
He is at another level beyond even CR7 and most other players in history. But Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, and possibly Eusabio & Gerd Muller were too. And there have been other players who have insane natural talent who didn't fare as well (poor choice of managers or teams, unlucky, injuries, poor management) who could have changed football as well.
But with Messi, talent, luck, teams, hard-work, injuries etc. it has all fallen into place. CR7 has to be commended as one of the best players ever as well (along with about 20 other similar level players), but he's just not game-changing level like those three.
it also creates tension as the opponents are too focused on *not* forgetting about messi since hes just walking and it creates openings for other players and then vice versa . its a pretty simple but creates heavy mental pressure
Sim to the presence of haaland. Doesn't really touch the ball but just having him occupying defenders opens up for everyone else, before finally striking.
I don’t think the upside of distraction from walking out weights the upside of the difficulty of marking someone who’s running. The fact that he opens up space for others is primarily due to the fact that he’s Lionel F’ing Messi, not some innate ability to occupy defenders attributable to walking.
No, I get the point. I just don't think it's more effective (even in a purely mental aspect) than him actually running into open spaces, though you weren't necessarily saying that. @@javiehr

When Mourinho shut him out in that Inter treble season, that idea behind the man marking was I believe to reduce the time Leo had on the ball. Less time he has, the more he has to rely on impulse and instinct rather than what he’s just analyzed in the first 5-10 minutes. It worked back then, but I am sure Messi studied that game endlessly that whenever Mou tried to implement that for El Clásico years later, it wouldn’t work as well. Even the goats need to study every now and then.
That was inter's plan deny messi space in the right half space and defend. Chelsea did the same several times vs barca

It also makes him looks less threatening. Of course you know you're playing against Messi. But if you see him just walking around you'll think he's just disinterested, the moment you take your eyes off him is when you're in trouble
I'm argentinian. I've seen him play live in a few world cup qualifiers games back in 2011-2013. It was amazing how it was like he wasn't there, just walking, until he stabbed the enemy team. Again and again.
Nowadays he has a presence that surrounds the entire field, but back then when he was more of a deadly winger than a playmaker, it was magical to see him activating 6th engine and dribbling 2 defenders when nobody expected that it was possible.
idk if it's the same thing, but my football coach always told us, when you move without the ball, you should move different than when you have the ball. Even the 'put your hands on your waist and pretend that you're tired' dark art.

This is also how Lebron James is still able to be a dominant player in the NBA as he approaches 40 and leads the league as the playoff points and minutes leader. Messi's overall contribution to a game, with the added advantage of prolific goalscoring is why, I've always chosen him over Ronaldo.
Ronaldo too had different evolutions as a player in role & execution but a large chunk of those transitions are centred around finishing.
This is why I hold the opinion the purpose behind seeing a Messi-Ronaldo era was to make us question our perspective on the most important aspects of football & footballers.
Is a goal scorer (striker/forward) more important than a goal contributor (creative midfielder)?
Another way to look at it is, in a story of craft who is more significant, the catalyst or the protagonist?
What are you talking about ronaldo can do everything on pitch I can't say the same for messi.
Creative midfielder 😂 if he's a midfielder show me his defensive statistics. 😂 messi played 100+ more games as a striker compares to ronaldo.
@@kssam8888When his team attacks, Messi participates in the midfield, when his team defends, he plays the role of a classic attacker and does not participate in defense.
😂 Is it me or you guys are trying to twist the role of the classic number 10.
Even contemporary number 10s like Ozil, Mata, James Rodriguez, Goetze, etc weren't required to defend until the emphasis for pressing and the devolution of the role 10 shifting to every position including GK came into the game.
Coaches who coached Messi (for a large part of his career) had to stick with the traditional approach to the game despite the ongoing evolution; which de-emphasizes the one man X factor player teams had then.
Same also for Ronaldo, only difference is, his role as the X factor player is totally different in the teams he played at; which made me throw out a philosophical question.
