    It's also probably a big reason why he's been able to perform at the top for so long, despite playing a lot of football as a teenager. The more physical strain on the body the more vulnerable it is to injury. And his teams are happy to defend with 10 players, because Messi's good enough that it's worth the sacrifice to ensure he remains fit. Similar story with Ronaldo, Mbappe and Neymar.

      Me was this kind of player back to school, lol. I would just score clutch goals or lay down important assists, also clutches crossing too, lol. And when my teammates told me to run, I would hesitate because I wanted to not only conserve energy but also watched what was going on. I would later have applied these skills when joining a hockey club. Anyway, this is just opportunism, or knowing when to make a correct decision, it's about being decisive.

      He is at another level beyond even CR7 and most other players in history. But Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, and possibly Eusabio & Gerd Muller were too. And there have been other players who have insane natural talent who didn't fare as well (poor choice of managers or teams, unlucky, injuries, poor management) who could have changed football as well.
      But with Messi, talent, luck, teams, hard-work, injuries etc. it has all fallen into place. CR7 has to be commended as one of the best players ever as well (along with about 20 other similar level players), but he's just not game-changing level like those three.

      @colemiller1591 Před 4 měsíci +10

      I don’t think the upside of distraction from walking out weights the upside of the difficulty of marking someone who’s running. The fact that he opens up space for others is primarily due to the fact that he’s Lionel F’ing Messi, not some innate ability to occupy defenders attributable to walking.

    When Mourinho shut him out in that Inter treble season, that idea behind the man marking was I believe to reduce the time Leo had on the ball. Less time he has, the more he has to rely on impulse and instinct rather than what he’s just analyzed in the first 5-10 minutes. It worked back then, but I am sure Messi studied that game endlessly that whenever Mou tried to implement that for El Clásico years later, it wouldn’t work as well. Even the goats need to study every now and then.

    Messi's overall contribution to a game, with the added advantage of prolific goalscoring is why, I've always chosen him over Ronaldo.
    Ronaldo too had different evolutions as a player in role & execution but a large chunk of those transitions are centred around finishing.
    This is why I hold the opinion the purpose behind seeing a Messi-Ronaldo era was to make us question our perspective on the most important aspects of football & footballers.
    Is a goal scorer (striker/forward) more important than a goal contributor (creative midfielder)?
    Another way to look at it is, in a story of craft who is more significant, the catalyst or the protagonist?

      😂 Is it me or you guys are trying to twist the role of the classic number 10.
      Even contemporary number 10s like Ozil, Mata, James Rodriguez, Goetze, etc weren't required to defend until the emphasis for pressing and the devolution of the role 10 shifting to every position including GK came into the game.
      Coaches who coached Messi (for a large part of his career) had to stick with the traditional approach to the game despite the ongoing evolution; which de-emphasizes the one man X factor player teams had then.
      Same also for Ronaldo, only difference is, his role as the X factor player is totally different in the teams he played at; which made me throw out a philosophical question.
      I guess a lot of you are too blinded by trying to pick a side that you don't see how their rivalry will potentially help the game.

It's just how it goes, every time he has position of the ball, he's sharp and that's when it all pays off.
