Great video and a solid review of doing this with a stock-ish Taco. Your video is one of the few I've seen that capture the steepness and narrowness around the steps. Even with that I'm sure they are scarier in real life.
I am terrified of heights and would never ever attempt this but I love seeing other people do it. I live through these videos. I am safely watching this sitting in my Tacoma on my lunch break haha.
I know someone that went down black bear pass in a 2015 Subaru Outback 2.5. With that said... I’m totally fine just hiking down 😃
Haha!
Great video!!! We’re heading back tomorrow and might do Black Bear again. The aspens looked great
We got soooo lucky! They were perfect and everything around the San Juans looked amazing!
@@HighjakSecondary heck yea! We’re headed down there tomorrow. Seems like there will be a little color left. When was this?
@@Colorado4x4 This was the last week of Sep.
Great video!
I drove all the way out there from Florida this past July to do the passes. Black Bear is by far my favorite. I also did it in my stock 2019 TRD off road. Stock except for upgraded skid plates.
I found all the trucks weak points, which is basically the entire suspension system. The rear bottoms out with just 220 pounds of added weight. The front nose dives during braking which is really bad when decending something like the steps. The body roll is ridiculous and articulation sucks.
So I ripped it all out. Ironman 3 inch lift... Coils, shocks, upper control arms, front diff drop, center bearing drop, better leafs and shocks in the rear. Body mount chop, eliminated the front sway bar completely, 16x8 zero offset wheels and 33 inch KO2s. (Could have gone 35s).
Now the truck is a mountain goat! I can't wait to run Black Bear again next summer without the worry of hitting bottom so much, the increased articulation down those off camber drop offs before the steps and the pretty long scape by that water crossing after the steps.
Go for the upgrades. You'll love the truck that much more!!
Hell yeah! I agree with all of that 100%, but I thought the stock articulation was pretty darn good. It does not handle weight well at all and I'm running around with about an additional 350lbs on the back over stock so I found that out pretty quick even before hitting the road to CO. I'm pretty excited to see what it does with things upgraded a bit. I have a set of BP51s and an OME HD Dakar leaf pack that need to go on after this Winter.
Good luck and always cautious, never be overconfident
Very nice video! What’s your experience with the 32 ko2? Do they rub on stock suspension? How’s highway driving and mpg? Thanks!
Nice video very informative and great views! Was wondering is your Tacoma new? Does all the mods void the warranty
Thanks! Yeah, I bought it new and it's a 2020. I mean, there isn't really one master warranty to void, but rather manufacturers have several warranties that apply to various things. Nothing I've done would void anything. That is until I modify the suspension then at least anything that would cover the suspension would not be covered.
@@HighjakSecondary haha just got my 2020 off road as well, scared to do anything that’ll void it but I wanna take it on trails. Just gonna throw sliders on and keep the suspension and tires stock until it’s paid off
@@nathanthorsen I hear that! I'm already tired of the stock suspension on mine so I'm past that. Lol. Oh well!
@@HighjakSecondary LOL I wouldn’t be surprised after watching your video. Always wanna upgrade!
Any thoughts on doing this in a stock '21 TRD Offroad DCLB Tacoma? I'm a bit worried about the longer wheelbase.
I would still suggest better tires, even if they are factory sizing or a small step up to 265/75r16s like I have in this video. A good AT tire is going to help tremendously compared to what these come with from the factory. I think you would be fine in a DCLB (with better tires as mentioned) in stock form as long as you don't have any additional weight on the vehicle.
@@HighjakSecondary thanks for the advice! Hoping to throw some new tires and suspension on soon!
@@HighjakSecondary given the choice again, would you still buy the LB? I'm torn on the DCLB, and DCSB
@@mikestill5819 I don't have the long box, mine is a short box.
The tires, 265-75’s? To make it 32”?
265/75r16
Mostly LOW Range to enjoy and for control?
Oh yeah, most of this trail was done in 4Lo.
Sheesh, dudes running it in Foresters and stock Ram 1500s!
omg so gnarly
Hey man did you ever scrape?
Yeah, several times. See the vid.
I almost died on this trail and wife was not happy.... Then again I went down during a thunderstorm, not worth it and wait until clear weather lol.
I remember you saying that! I cannot imagine doing the steps with any amount of moisture on the ground. F that!
I did this past July 23rd. I had the entire trail pretty much to myself. I was also by myself, no spotter. It was raining with intermittent hail as I did the steps so there was some sliding. But all in all it wasn't bad. I can't wait to do it again next summer with the upgrades I've done.
@@GATORADDAM That's crazy. I'm certain that if there was a cloud in the sky I'd turn around. Lol.
The trd off road isn’t exactly stock though. It’s pretty well equipped.
What comes equipped on varying trim packages for a specific model vehicle doesn’t change a “stock” status. The meaning of stock has to do with it being modified from its original factory configuration or not.
Nice upload. You might enjoy my videos
I wish every damn person would stop putting video up of them doing Black Bear Pass. Geez. It’s crowded enough here. Is it that important to you to show everyone else where you went? I always thought it was about the experience itself. There are PLENTY of videos of this already.
Think I’ll put one up today...just saying..
Found the guy who’s whole personality is his 4x4! Shut up nerd
I'm glad he posted, wanted to see how this truck performed stock. This trail isn't exactly a secret ya know...
I'm going to Instagram a video of me doing it in a lifted Lamborghini.
