  • Today we tackle one of the most dangerous off road trails in Colorado. Black Bear Pass is a notorious jeep road trail that starts from 11,018-foot summit of Red Mountain Pass on U.S. Highway 550 to Telluride, Colorado. I’m absolutely impressed on how my Toyota Tacoma performed.
    Enjoy!

Just did this trail a few weeks ago in my XJ Cherokee (was first person there, same day the Wrangler rolled). The trail isn’t that tough... BUT no video can convey the uncomfortable feeling of being off-camber mere feet away from a cliff. I’ve knocked it off the list, but I don’t need to do it again. Poughkeepsie Gulch was far away my favorite trail in the region.

I hunt with my camera, flowers and butterflies. I was drawn to this video to verify how as an inexperienced driver I can access the alpine habitat. If you want to understand how this is analogous to hunting, read Hemingways "Green Hills of Africa" where the rifle is just his excuse to get out into nature and observe; it's not about pulling the trigger. Being from this part of Colorado (and even having gone to middle school in Telluride) it was interesting that I was able to guess where these guys were from. After the first few minutes of the video, I was like, "I bet they're totally from California." and I finally caught a glimpse of a license plate, and yup, Cali. They're totally cool and chill guys, and I wouldn't hesitate to hang out with them, but it's interesting how "outdoorsy" people are different from region to region. It's like they're their own type of rugged, which is like, kind of cleaner? More stylish? More with it? All your clothes looked laundered and wrinkle free. Even the hoodies. And your trucks looked super nice too. Maybe "California Rugged"? And it's really different from what I'm used to which I guess is "Colorado Rugged". Ha ha. Glad you guys enjoyed your visit to the San Juans, and thanks for the great video!

But when I'm out car camping, it's like, a can of Ranch Style Beans opened and placed on a rock next to the fire using a pair of pliers eaten with a pack of store tortillas, or if I have a Coleman with me, it's Spam and potatoes and a beer, ha ha.

Thanks for sharing George! Quick question. How did you feel in the right turnarounds on this trail with the rear tire swing out? I have the ability to add a one to my Tacoma. Use to driving my 4rnr but it’s been sidelined so I gotta use my Taco to do this trail.

Did this Pass after doing Mosquito Pass with my "99" Silverado Z-71 factory stock except for the 285 Destination MT's on it with cap on back. Fun times!

Hey George I posted on your bajadesigns lights. Trying to find some info on wiring. Since you have the bajadesigns lights. I added 20 inch amber led bar to my 2020 4runner. I hooked it up with the switch. But I want to add on board switch. Do you know which wires connect from the wire harness to the push button switch. The Baja has red, black, yellow. And the on board switch has 4wires. The push button gives it a cleaner look. Any info would be great. Thanks.

More line stuck in the 1890's. Ouray is my Heaven on earth. For all the FJ owners, every summer in late July there is the FJ Summit. 4 days of group wheeling on Black Bear and other trails. It is awesome.
