In this part we take a look at what a voxel is, why you may be getting volume stepping and how to fix it.
This is part 2 of 3 tutorials that will cover how I prep my trails in order to then simulate cool smoke trails in Houdini. These 3 tutorials are the beginning lessons for my premium smoke trails course. Hope you enjoy and be sure to ask me any questions that you have in the comments! Tnx.

why not just use a trail SOP? the sopsolver is overkill for patching substep motion. its best to avoid any additional simulation networks whenever possible. 1 node would do the job of 5 that you have there

You’re totally right, and I agree you should do that if you’re given pre animated trails. I don’t that in this case because in the next part of the tutorial I show how to make your own trails using the pop sim. That’s why I went this route.
There’s obviously a lot of ways to make trails too, you could draw them yourself or go other routes. I was just trying to show a way to feed 1 or 1000 missiles in and you could get some cool results.

Oh I think you were talking about the sop solver part - well yes a trail would do the job too. I think at the time I was trying to use it to help show how the sop solver works, but I’ve also had many times where using it is almost just as fast as timeshifting a trail sop like 240 frames. But yeah I guess just preference 🤔this go around.
