The CZcams algorithm brought me here. As an F1 fan since the mid-90s I must say the take on F1 from DTS is not entirely correct and has many holes in it. F1 started in the 50s and yes you couldn’t see the drivers faces behind a helmet and speeding around the track. However, onboard cameras for F1 cars were introduced in the 70s, with the first (onboard camera that showed drivers faces) used in 1985. So, for almost 40 years F1 fans could see the “white in their eyes”, the nuances in a drivers facial expressions.
DTS never made these drivers characters, those of us watching F1 already knew these drivers were incredible characters (i.e. Kimi, Alonso etc…) and saw that week in week out. Listening to the driver messages, interviews and seeing the onboard video/images. DTS simply amplified and popularised F1 to a mainstream audience (those casual fans). You can certainly say DTS made a few people on the show personalities (i.e. Guenther Steiner), but he was a real character in and around the F1 paddock already.
Also, to claim that before DTS there were “relatively few races”, is just a poor characterisation. In 2018/2019 F1 had 21 races, it’s now 24. So since DTS they’ve added just 3 race tracks (Qatar, Miami and Vegas), attempting to grow the USA audience from the show.
The one thing they got completely correct is that DTS is certainly for people who don’t know F1 or the results. Many F1 fans like myself found DTS to be a total farce. It simply prioritised drama and sensationalism over accurately depicting the sport. They exaggerated rivalries, race results, commentary and invented conflicts all for entertainment purposes. Now we have a number of new fans who want the sport to be like the show. That’s what’s disappointing.
F1 is incredible, it can change but it must stay true to the sport. Apologies for the rant, if you’ve read the whole thing, well done.

Drive to Survive isn't for the diehard F1 fans, it's for the casual viewers. I would liken it more to WWE. It's sports based entertainment.
Over the last 10 years, the inner workings of the industry has become more interesting than what you see in front of the camera.

DTS is an interesting one for me. I'd suggest it has defintiely increased awareness & interest in F1 as a whole and brought in a lot of new viewers and helped the new american owners improve the product offering for future success...BUT...I think it DTS + the new owners taking a new direction has deminished enjoyment for a lot of previous fans due to the increased fakery, pagentry and showmanship of it all rather than pure racing. I understand the need to adapt and grow to keep it alive and I guess this is the direction they believe is most sustainable to do so

I started watching in the late 90s as a kid and looking back on it, I think a big draw for me was that the drivers were enigmatic and you didn't know what was truly going on behind the scenes. My favourite driver was Mika Hakkinen who was famous for one word "yes" answers to convoluted and bloated questioning from the press. I loved that! I don't need to know what a driver had for breakfast or how many times he walks his dog a week.

Long time F1 fan, very recent football fan. What Drive to Survive offers, and why I believe its successful, aside from it being made well and beautifully shot, is that it told people the stories before they had to watch a new F1 season. Trying to get into football was so hard because I didn't know what teams are meant to do well, who has rivalries, how teams have done in previous years, who played for who and where they play now, its all part of the story that makes 22 people kicking a ball around exciting. Same reason I could never imagine starting to watch soap operas now because they are always halfway through a story so its intimidating to try and get started. Drive to Survive allowed people kind of into F1 to know the stories, the rivalries, who drove for what team and managed them and all else, so they can now enjoy the sport itself

Before drive to survive, all the ingredients for a proper soap style drama of the sport were there, but as a fan you would have to follow all the drivers, listen to all the pre race and post race statements, which would take hours for each team, and then listen to podcasts or read sports columns on top of all that to see the sport through the lens of other fans. Now Netflix has done it all for you in an elegant package of 9 or so episodes. The closest thing that exists in football are things like the Sunderland doc, the Amazon prime docs, but they're only one team for one season.

It shapes your inner self to not trust anything at face value and constantly ask yourself the question - what's the motivation of the creator of what your being confronted with and am I being taken for a mug?
How these two manage to work within that world and not get messed up with what's real/what's fake must be incredibly hard. How do you not come to regard everything with a massive dose of mistrust or cynicism?

It’s the reason tv companies love Mourinho and Klopp and Djokovic etc. forget the press conferences etc sports fans will watch their games anyway but they create their own narratives and that’s what draws in the big numbers on non-sports fans.

I suspect if you actually had a discussion with Gaga or Robert Pattison about this stuff there would be at least a bit more substance to what they may or may not have said and why. I've only just come across this podcast but im never a fan of anacdotal declarations about other people. In all honesty this sounds exactly like the kind of celebrity gossip pap that an OK magazine or Hello magazine would be doing. Like a caricature of people. The Tom Cruise thing also, i mean, im far happier to see what Tom Cruise is actually like, good and bad, than have someone who makes it their purpose to put across a fake veneer of who the man is 🤷‍♂️. To be clear, im not someone who idolises celebrity, or celebrity bashing, but i don't like superficial conversations about things either. Regarding the context conversation. You can take something out of context and it still puts across the point the person was making accurately and you can take something out of context and make it mean something completely different or very much slanted. Her point about anything can be out of context really comes across as a disingenuous statement that ignores the reality of why someone might say "that's out of context". I'm surprised Richard nods away at that kind of comment as if wisdom is being spoken 🤷‍♂️.

There are many different levels of smut in romantasy, you can get more closed door to borderline erotica, I don’t think you should just class the whole category as porn.
Also Ninth Rain has been redound, it’s finally getting an American release thanks to a push on social media, it’s an amazing genre bending series but it’s not romantasy

Drive to Survive is the Coronation Street of F1. It’s very contrived and uses out of context quotes and creates controversy where there is none. I’ve been watching F1 since 1979 and I only managed to watch season one of DTS before going back to proper F1 journalism. It’s greatly increased the popularity of the sport though. Demand for Grand Prix tickets has skyrocketed. My usual Silverstone seats have gone from £325 to £900 since it came on the scene. Basically they can now charge what they like and the less affluent can no longer afford to go.

Interesting, I'm an F1 fan since 1983. I've zero interest in watching Drive To Survive and I think the sport isn't as good as it used to be with the extra races, sprint races and lack of teams (and Red Bull having 2 teams is nonsense) compared to back when there were 26 cars in every race.

Since the takeover by the americans, one could argue that Drive to Survive is actually a part of what's seen as the erosion of the sport as many of the long time fans see it. Things like sprint weekends are awkward and forced and don't "feel" like F1 but it's here to stay to placate fans who get bored for the traditional longer Gran Prix and make more money in the process of course.

@@mattblack6736 I would agree with that view as a long term fan (been watching for near 20 years now). F1 has moved away from being a racing series and continues to alienatd it core fan whic imho will harm it in the long term.

I feel very strongly that you two, and the content on this channel, is very much above the ugly clickbait thumbnail trend. I understand the considerations, and the algorithm, etcetera, but personally speaking: There's a very significant chance I would have never clicked on one of your videos if it weren't for the 'Clickbait Remover' Chrome extension I use (that removes all thumbnails and grabs a frame from somewhere in the middle of videos instead, strongly recommended), and I have a feeling that there might be many others like me out there that are currently missing your channel because the thumbnails make it look like generic, trashy, reposted clickbait videos.

A long term F1 fan, 5 decades. Cancelled subscription day after Abu Dhabi 2021. Stopped watching highlights completely end of 2022. Never supported specific team or drivers just liked the cars, strategies and racing. From my perspective DTS or probably more accurately Liberty Media have destroyed F1. It’s now about entertainment and money. Too many street circuits. Totally over the top US style presentation.

    F1, American Sports?
If commercially available cars, in standard guise, toured the world racing on the ‘big’ circuits I’d sign up. And you’d STILL get the continuous leaps in development and feed-through of safety, handling and performance features claimed by the developers of F1.
Save the Planet… ? No, just spend a shitload of money making pointless cars race around in pointless races.
And… American sports and their ‘World’ series and competition? IMO not worth a w*nk.
