Great time for me Dr. I actually just ordered my copy of the Rambams Mishna Torah. This lecture actually reassures me I made a good decision to expand my learning of the Rambam. I hope to go at 3 chapters a day. I really enjoyed getting some background on Rambam. Thank you Dr. for sharing your informative lecture.

Actually your Chabad friend was just quoting the Lubavitcher Rebbe who held that one fulfills the obligation to know the entire Torah through learning the Mishnah Torah.

I've heard it said (by a doctor) that Maimonides' most important medical advance was not any of the research and treatises mentioned here, but his belief in washing his hands before touching his patients, and advocacy of the practice. Apparently, this was an innovation at the time. His theories on haemorrhoids, asthma etc. may have been advanced in their time, but I'm pretty sure they have all now been superceded by more modern medical science. However, doctors washing their hands has not been!

& actually most of the rest of medicine didn't catch on until around 1900.

@@jaxxbrat2634 I mean that doctors washing their hands hasn't been superceded, not that they fail to do it.

An interesting introduction. Clearly Maimonides deserves a higher profile in the history of western philosophy than he has had to the present. For instance he was a significant influence on the Scholastics who knew of his knowledge of Aristotle but is seldom mentioned in that connection. By way of a barometer I checked my copy of Bertrand Russell's History of Western Philosophy and Rambam rates only a paragraph at the end of the chapter on "Mohammedan Philosophy". I studied philosophy to postgraduate level in English universities and came across Rambam only in that sort of brief reference. - But enough to peak my interest on seeing your video. Thanks very much.
I have watched a number of your other videos on jewish history. You have a great talent for explaining difficult subjects in an clear and engaging way. A rare gift. And even rarer amongst the Himalayas of tosh on CZcams.

so true. in these days we need a way to obtain wisdom from the sea of knowledge. interestingly wisdom has two directions that will lead to polarization.

I love your classes And especially your personality.
A little elucidation on the Rebbes Rambam program. No Chabad school has lessened their study of Talmud Gemoro poiskim etc as a result of this Rambam 3 chapters a day practice. The objective of the Rebbe was to increase study, and unite all Jews together in an exercise that incorporated the goal of learning Torah, which is not the Talmud, but actual deed, since Judaism is a religion of Halacha and Hamaashe hu ha ikar.
Since as you mentioned, the Rambam stands out in his Mishneh Torah as incorporating all laws including those that pertain to the Temple, Moshiach, Priests, Kings etc...someone who goes through the entire Rambam becomes familiar and connected with all the precepts of the Torah which is very important for all souls to accomplish. As you said, just reading the Talmud alone can be very confusing for most people unless one has a memory like the Rambam did (in his younger years.)
The Rebbe, even after he started this program continued with his siyumim on may tractates of the Talmud and his teachings on every facet of the Torah unparalleled by any other leader and Rabbi of then and until now. Again I love your classes it adds such a rich perspective on our history and heritage.
