  • It has been suggested by ancient poets that The Fates (Moirai, goddesses of destiny) were even more powerful than Zeus. In this video, we'll learn about the three sisters named Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos, and the roles they play in the lives of both mortals and gods. What are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments below!

    Another deity more powerful than Zeus would be Phanes, god of life, creation and order. The very first god born from a cosmic egg that came from Ananke (Inevitability) and Chronos (Time)

      Wow, thank you for your insightful comment. I’d somehow never heard of Phanes (or Ananke) or had just forgotten. I will do some more research on these topics and perhaps can make a future video with this info. All the best!

      @@ahmedbeqqal4522Zefs (Zeus, Ζεύς) is the highest of all Gods for which he is called Ýpatos (Ὕπατος), even Fate is subservient to him. Zefs is responsible for the entire Kózmos and because of his compassion for his creatures he has brought providence to fruition in his son Diónysos (Διόνυσος). He is the great Olympian, whom even the Gods obey, the king and father of Gods and men (Πατὴρ ἀνδρῶν τε Θεῶν τε), indeed, he is the father of everything.

    Loving the new video series featuring works of art. I didn't know much about the fates before this, not to mention I'd never heard of the artist or this fantastic painting before. Thanks for sharing.

    Ah! Never really knew there was a sort of hierarchy between the three sisters... Interesting. Also didn't really understand their particular tasks/duties in such comprehensive detail. This video was really very insightful and I honestly learned alot. The artist did a truly amazing job when considering all the extra little details in the work.
    Thanks for keeping Greek Mythology alive and spreading the information out into the world.

      Same here! I knew very little about them before making the video, except for the basics. I’m continually amazed at the breathtaking detail and scope of ancient Greek religion and poetry. They just had such a marvelous way of embodying the principles that seem to rule our lives as strange little creatures on this pale blue dot we live on. I love how the author Hilary Mantel (RIP) talked about the past and how it’s never finished, but is like the medium through which we all still move whether we’re aware of it or not.
      Thanks for keeping up with the channel, commenting, and inspiring me as a creator!

      Also it was interesting to learn about the craft of spinning. Such an important skill in the ancient world! When I was at Kerameikos in Athens there was a little museum that had all this marvelous terracotta spindle whorls. Such intimate objects are sometimes just as profound as the grand sculptures.

      I should try and visit the museums more often, there are plenty here in Cape Town where I live. Cape Town also seems to like it's statues of the Greco Roman gods. We have several statues of Athena and Poseidon, Hermes, Artemis, Atlas, Nike, Demeter and more in and around the city...

    Very interesting as always. There is something about Divinities that are regarded as more powerful than even the supreme ruler Zeus.
    I believe that Zeus was even fearful of Nyx who was sometimes regarded as the more of the three Morai/Fates...

    • @TinyEpics
      @TinyEpics  Před rokem +1

      Yes, I’ve read this too about Nyx. Zeus is such an interesting counterpoint to the female deities, and especially the Cthonic ones. Also interesting how Zeus is often said to have a Cthonic counterpart as well as keeping everything in order as the great Sky god. One starts to see that there are no good or evil deities, only subtle changes and shifts constantly going on to keep some sense of order, harmony, and balance amidst seemingly conflicting energies.

      It's certainly true that these gods (and many others from different cultures) cannot be accurately labeled with a mortal understanding of morality... I can't remember if it was on this channel or another where I once mentioned that the gods are amoral, loosely meaning that they aren't concerned about our moral understanding of "good & evil" and thus basically do as they please, as is their prerogative.
      Zeus definitely has clashes with many female Divinities, mortals, and other beings. Perhaps a cultures way of trying to adapt different concepts and subduing a feminine godhead under the masculine...

    ah~ the Moirai.. the scapegoat of characters in Greek Mythology when doing bad/crazy thing 🤣😂 although I dont think I remember any of them blaming the Moirai..
    For me, the existence of Moirai is frightening. Just to know that no matter what I do, I can't escape my fate is just sad and frightening... Well, that's me being gloomy...
    I think I never mention this before, because I think I always got caught in my emotions in commenting... Anyway, I just wanna say I am always grateful for your videos.. Thank you for making such wonderful videos...

      Awww thanks for the wonderful comment. It means a lot to me that you take the time to leave your thoughtful words, and I'm sure the other viewers appreciate them as well!
      I have sort of the opposite reaction to the Fates. If I know there's nothing I can do to change my fate it kind of makes me relax into it, if that makes sense. I feel like we have all sorts of little freedoms within the overarching "fate" of our lives. We can choose how we respond to fate, for instance. At least that's how I see it.
      That's wonderful to hear that the videos bring out emotions in you. I think it's important to confront ourselves with all sorts of thoughts about ourselves and others, and I think Greek mythology helps a lot with that. That, and to see oneself as the hero of their own life. We may not have written the script, so to speak, but we can make some things up as we go along. I've got another video coming up soon that I think you'll really like,

    how do the Fates interact with the god/dess of luck/fortune?

    • @TinyEpics
      @TinyEpics  Před rokem +1

      That’s a great question, and I’ll certainly look into it and hopefully incorporate it into an upcoming video. I found this on theoi.com:
      Tykhe was depicted with a variety of attributes--holding a rudder, she was conceived as the divinity guiding and conducting the affairs of the world, and in this respect she was called one of the Moirai (Moirae, Fates); with a ball she represented the varying unsteadiness of fortune, unsteady and capable of rolling in any direction; with Ploutos (Plutus) or the cornucopia, she was the symbol of the plentiful gifts of fortune.
