- An interesting piece of Yellow Birch. Has a valley right next to a ridge. I wanted to incorporate that into the finished piece. With lots of work and diligence, I got most of it! The result is this bark on, live edge bowl that has beautiful grain contrasting with the great bark. Finished in shellac.

I like Phil, another piece of wood with a new life
Thanks, Rob! 😊
That birch bark live edge is fantastic. I also enjoy the way you "talk" your way through your decisions with your audience. Bravo!!🪵
Awesome! Thank you! 😄
Phil, I really appreciate your videos because you tell us what you do and what you use during your video. I have learned a lot from you, in fact sometimes when I screw up I imagine your voice giving me a hard time. Thank you.
Haha, that doesn't sound like me, Russell! 😊
Another beatiful piece .My brother used to do amazing things with driftwood just cleaning them and and using the natural shape to make tables and frames etc .Unfortunately he died last year but every time I watch your videos I know he would have loved your work so I feel like Im watching it with him
Wonderful, thank you! 😊
...yes...I do like it quite a bit...I think the grain and the bark give it a unique look...well done...👍
Cool, thank you! 😊
One of the best. So glad you restored the bark that broke off. And I think you kept the perfect amount of that hub.
I think so too, Walter, thanks! 😊
That was awesome 👏. My wife and I enjoy the way you salvage as much bark as possible. 👍
Glad you enjoyed it, Dennis, thank you to you and your wife! 😃
Beutiful as always Phil live edge always keeps it real instead of something manufactured and mass prejudiced it's unique as always. 👍
Right on, Kelvin! 😊
I like the way you saved the bark. Turned out great
Cool, thanks, Garth! 😊
Love this, it’s almost like a wooden basket, wood be perfect full of apples
Yes! 😊
It is absolutely amazing what you can do with a stump of wood. It is just awesome and stunningly beautiful.
Haha, thank you, Kobie, you made my day! 😊
Nicely done Phil! I am glad you didn’t leave the flat areas. It has more character this way.
😊
Sometimes I feel like that old cracked piece of wood but you make them look so pretty! Thank you.
Thank you! 😊 Cheers!
Great piece. I like that you see beauty in the imperfections.
😊
You make this look so effortless (like anyone could do) and I know that is not true. I am very impressed with your work.
You are too kind, Shelby! 😊
I just love watching you turn wood!
I love you being there with me, Danella! 😊
I’m feeling quite melancholy this evening for some reason, so here I am watching your brilliant turning to feel better. Thanks🍻
I hope it works, Betty! 😊
Beautiful
It works that way for me too, Betty.
Since I've been watching your art I have came to realize more and more that sometimes cracks are simply beauty marks and the bark is like whip cream on pie.
I made one live edge bowl out of a elm crotch piece and the most satisfying part about it is watching people hold the bowl and turning it over and over while never taking thier hands off of the bark.
That's what I call mission accomplished lol
Exactly! Far more interesting than a nice, perfectly round and smooth bowl. More fun to turn, too! 😊
@Phil Anderson - Shady Acres Woodshop very fun to turn...you don't have a clue what it will look like. Kinda like opening a Christmas present but but a longer process
Lucky ants...to live in such a beautiful home....we all should be so blessed. Great job 😊👍
Haha, they are gone, Dennis! I made sure before I brought it in the house. Oh, the thought of that gives me the heebie-jeebies! 😊
Love that you saved that bark. Very nice!
😊
I enjoy your videos, and really like the narration. So many You Tubers do not do that. I don't especially share your aesthetics with all the gnarly wood, but no matter. Sometimes is like watching a NASCAR race, wondering when the disaster will occur! Thanks to your skill, it doesn't happen. Good work.
I think you are unusual in that regard, Ron and it speaks highly of you. If you don't love the kind of wood I turn but still can enjoy the video, that makes you extra special in my book! 😊
Nice bowl, Phil. You show us that even our scars, when handled gently, can be beautiful!
Thank you so much, Crystal! 😊
Beautiful as always. You have caused to look at my firewood with a new eye. Thank you for a new life in the shop!
Thank you very much! I like to say, if you have a lathe there is no such thing as firewood. 😊
Beautiful live edge bowl enjoyed watching you turn this Beauty well done Phil
I appreciate that, Rich! 😊
Another beautiful bowl, Phil. Glad you found that bark. Great video, my friend. 👍👍👍😃😃😃
Thanks a bunch, Gord! Stay healthy, buddy! 😊
Another good turning Phil, so pleased the bark was replaced it is a great feature.
I agree, Lewis, thank you! 😊
Always worth watching your presentations-techniques and comments, a nice balance and thanks for no crappy music, something that turns this old guy off watching many video presentations. Stay safe, very sad to hear the tragic loss of your fellow countrymen at that hell-hole called Kabul, so close to leaving that backwards sandpit. I feel for their families and friends, words are inadequate.
Thank you for your heartfelt comment, Shevill. 😊
Very nice, beautiful grain and contrast. Thank you for the great video.
😊
Nice piece. Didn’t expect that from birch.
I was pleasantly surprised too, Stewart. Thank you! 😊
Thank You Phil, Thank You Karl Bunker in Massachusetts...Interesting piece of Birch, unusual bark. I do look forward to sitting here every Thursday afternoon watching the logistics of you making the most from difficult pieces of wood! Each piece has its little quirks for you to "cogitate" on. Seeing a beautifully finished bowl is always desirable BUT it's the adventure you offer us Phil, YEA!!!.. The star of this one is the glued on bark. Each piece you turn has it's focus.
Until next Thursday ... TM
Thank you, Tuffy! I looked all over the shop for that piece of bark. I finally gave up, walked back to the lathe and it was laying right there under the bed ways. LOL! I agree, that is the highlight of this piece. I'm so glad you enjoy the videos and join us all every Thursday for a fun adventure! Stay safe and healthy, my friend!
Looks Great. Glad you glued that bark back on.
Me too, Rick, thanks! 😊
🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil as always a great video of your work at Shady Acres. I really enjoy my weekly visit to your lathe it really is a fantastic end to an otherwise boring week. Thanks Phil see you next time. 👍👍👍👍
Thanks, John! 👍
Amazed that you were able to save the bark. Birch bark likes to separate when it drys
I was kind of amazed too, Rick, for the same reason.
That grain is gorgeous!
😃
Well Phil you got a real nack for this i love this piece. With the bark still on makes it pop. Another great job my friend keep up the turning these bowls so neat. I love watching you . Thanks so much for sharing

Another notable video. Wonderful 🏆
Thank you, Eric! 😊
I not only like to watch you create beautiful pieces on your lathe, I like to listen to the clatter as you work that makes me think of Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire dancing their way across the stage. I like that you stop often for us to take a look and ask for our opinion or advice even though you can’t hear us. What a great job you do on each and every piece. I haven’t been disappointed yet. Keep doing what you do best.
Awesome, thank you, Betsy! 😊
I am glad you decided to glue that bit of bark back on. It really adds a lot to the piece. Beautiful as always, Phil!
Thank you, Sabrina, agreed! 😊

He said it after introducing the piece, Jane
@@kerstin4516 must have come in late to the video.
Thank you, Jane! 😊
Hi Phil. Haven't seen you around these parts recently, but that's probably all on me. I've been staying busy with that round and round machine down cellar- I forget what you call it. After a little less than four weeks of work with it, my greatest creation to date is undoubtedly three large trash bags full of chips and dust. I have attempted several bowls, three of which finished the creation process as bowls. One of those, the third attempt and first survivor, I am actually quite pleased with. It turned out to be a live edged alder bowl, straight thin (3/16") sides with a morticed bottom. Two tenon's broke off, thus the mortice. So I may never be a professional bowl maker, despite your patient tutelage, but I do make a mean snowman. The whole secret is in painting the mouth straight with down turned corners. Hope all is well with you. I still have a lot of work to do in setting up my shop, but I will catch up with your videos before too many moons cross our bow. Best wishes, Pete î
Setting up a shop is fun, Pete, enjoy! 😃 And, please know, in the beginning, I had pieces flying all over the shop on a regular basis. To actually finish a piece was a rarity. It'll come, just have fun!
As always it’s so pretty Phil love it
😊
Very nice piece again Phil, glad you took the corners off. Love the contrast between the inside wood and the dark bark.
Glad you like it, Ron, that makes me happy! 😊
Lovely as per usual. I do like a bowl with a dropped side, it can make for a very satisfying display piece.
Greetings from Victoria, Australia 🇦🇺.
😊
Bowl has a cute shape.
😊
Quite a challenge that. I like the result, Phil. Lovely bowl!
😊

Yay, thank you, Gary! 😊
Cogitate... good word, buddy! The bowl looks fantastic!
Thanks, Billy! Yeah, us cogitators gotta stick together, buddy! 😊
Good evening, Phil. I sure enjoyed watching a rough piece of wood change before our eyes. Telling us about your thought process then doing it is a teaching bonus. Thumbs up.
Glad you enjoyed it, Ray, thank you! 😊
Phil the Amazing!!
😊
Unique and gorgeous❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧😊
😊
Phil, i watched video from 2 years ago. You mentioned your wifes passing. I am so sorry and was shocked when you said it. It broke my heart even though i knew it was an old video. Please know, although i never met you, me and my family pray for you. Stay strong my friend.
Thank you, Brent. 😊
Wonderfully magnificent!
Glad you think so, Vicki, thank you! 😊
Emotionally rough week! (They’re still kicking.) This bowl is quite pretty. Depending on the angle it is viewed from, it looks a bit like a fancy tortoise 🐢 shell. 😁 OK, I really need to shut down and get some sleep before I say something ridiculous or inappropriate. Thanks for putting up with me and my silliness! You are a special friend! See you next video! Have a great week! 🌲💚🌳 💟🫂🤗 🌸 Roma 🐘 🦅 PS: Happy 67th anniversary to my Mom&Dad. 8/28

67 years together! What an accomplishment, Roma! Of course, they have you to thank for much of that. I know it's a burden but you handle it well. Stay healthy and positive, my friend. You are doing good, valuable work. 😊

Thank you, Brian! 😊
Good Evening , Phil
Loved the Video ! I have the same problem as not being able to see a particular item in a piece of wood !
But once I get it in my lathe , and begin turning , I then I can see a kinda path to follow !
Take Care and Be Safe
Yup, that's the way it goes with these natural turnings, Larry.
I like it I like it real nice Phil
😊
That bowl is happy you glued the bark back on. With that big, toothy and cheesy grin (big upper lip and all), it appears to be saying “thank you!”. Or maybe it is just happy to be still in one piece, with very nice shaping. 🤣 LOL! Either way, nice results!
I love the cheesy grin, too, Valerie! 😊
Beautiful bowl Phil keep turning stay safe👍👍👍👍
Thanks, will do! 😊
I think it looks beautiful 👍👍
