Sassy Sassafras! - Wood Turning

- My second time turning this wood and this was the pleasurable experience. First piece gave me a hard time with an unseen internal mess of rot. I had a lot of fun with this turning and I love how it turned out. I wish my viewers could feel the grain in this piece, it's very tactile to the touch. The wood has a wonderful sweet fragrance, much like smelling root beer! I went with a square shape for this bowl leaving some of the beautiful orange bark. Finished in shellac.

That bowl is more beautiful than the last sassafras bowl. A square bowl was an excellent choice.
😊
Phil- It’s all turning but every piece is different. Seems like you always discover what the piece ought to become - and with discipline and attention to detail, you make it the best it could be. It’s always a joy to watch. Praying for peace and healing.
😊
Oh I love the ban box you showed us. It's very unique. Now you've shown me a square round bowl!!! You're teaching this old woman a lot about wood and how you create these beautiful works of art. It's nice to realize I'm not too old to learn about our amazing mother nature.😊
Thanks so much, Mary! 😊 Mother Nature has a lot to offer!
This sassy safrass is lovely. The soft shin of the grain is so nice? The texture, the bead, the shape! So very beautiful!
Thank you so much, Linda! 😊
I love this sassy square bowl, beautiful beautiful grain design. ♥️
😊
A Candy dish for root beer barrels!! Another beauty! Thanks for showing us.
😊
Amazing phil. Your a natural wood turner.
😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop how you doing phil? Hope your feeling better x
An almost regular bowl...that's different! You STILL put your own little spin on it. The grain is awesome in sassafras. When you wet the bark, I instantly had a craving for bacon! When I was a kid, mom & dad would take me out in the woods looking for sassafras saplings. They're not hard to find in Central Indiana. We would dig up a pound or two of roots and mom would boil them up in a huge cast iron kettle. Oh, the aroma! We'd have tea, homemade sassafras ice cream and hard candy. It was a dream for a kid...ahhh, those were the days! Thanks Phil!
Sounds idyllic, Max! 😊
I do enjoy you. Thanks Phil

PHIL, ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL PEACE, GREAT VIDEO, GREAT JOB, SEE YOU NEXT WEEK, TELL EVERYBODY HELLO...
😊
I love the deep, chunky bark. Just beautiful.
😊
Love both your Bandsaw box and your Square bowl. Both are Beautiful.
😊
Beautiful, as always. You say you’re not a teacher or an artist but you are both and I enjoy your videos tremendously.
😊
Just a short message to see how your getting on, haven't seen any updates, hopefully your on the mend, hope this gets through to you and finds you getting fit n healthy enough for some more turning, those vids of yours are certainly missed.
All the best

A rainy day in Georgia. I wish I could raise my spirits somehow. My goodness, a video from the man! God is good!
😊
Thanks for the band saw box intro. And yes, it’s about time for sassafras roots in the iron pot on the wood stove in the shop! Memories! Thanks Phil.
😊
Hope your recovery is swift Phil.. take care.. nice bowl too 😊
😊
Wow ! I almost forgot . HAPPY BIRTHDAY Phil !!
😊
Wish I had 1/10th of your talent, Phil. You take a piece of junk wood & bring it to life! 👍👍👌👌
😊
Used to love when my grandma gave me sassafras root to chew a loose tooth out. What a beautiful square bowl.
😊
That band saw box is exquisite. I've never heard of such a beast before. You've got some talent. Beautiful. M.
Fun and easy to make, too, Mark! Thank you! 😊
Not sure where Sassafras grows but it sure is pretty. The grain is very special and with this it seems better bit to get a perfectly flat sanding job just to be able to feel it.
Great finish as well and I like the ring. I just finished a big bowl and put a ring on it. Something I usually do not do. The bowl is not square and sure is not round either. You will have to wait a week to see it as I decide to use Danish oil and it is not drying as fast as would like. A bit cold around here I am thinking.
I bet your bowl would be great for ice cream because you might have something that taste like a root beer float LOL.
Great job buddy,
Gary
Hey, Gary, we have sassafras growing here in Ohio. I have some in my woods. It's an interesting tree because it has three different leaves growing at once.
Bill
LOL! Root beer float! Leave it to you, my friend! 😊
One of my best sellers. Bandsaw boxes. ❤
😊
Phillips very cute! And your English is very understandable, especially for a Brazilian like me. Thank you very much!
Thank you very much, Cezar! 😊
Another thoughtful work of art instead of just a round bowl. Love natural edged pieces. Great job.
😊
My grandmother always had a big bag of Sassafras shavings for tea. I loved it. Can’t find it anymore. You’re right, it smells(& tastes!) amazing.
Thanks for sharing, Chrissy! 😊
That bandsaw box is absolutely gorgeous! What lovely work!
😊
It’s fun to watch my friend Phil do his thing. Nice result.
😊
Beautiful and rustic. Thank you for the video.
😊
Band saw box with bark.....what a surprise! Oh, nice bowl Phil.
😊
I'm never all that confident that I'm going to like it once you announce that it's going to be a winged bowl. So far, you've always proven me wrong.
You made me chuckle when you said, "I'm right again." re: the Zinzer sanding seal making the bark sparkle.
That grain was so cool.
Haha, I'm glad I could give you a chuckle, Kathleen! 😃
Wow, the grain is really neat, so is the bowl. From the sounds of it, this week we should have had "Smellovision"...lol.
😊
Awesome bowl...everytime I turn a square bowl, someone buys it!
😊
Phil you are a artist.
😊
I love that box. Wow 🙃💜
😊
Beautiful, light colored wood. You designed an intriguing bowl that shows off the grain perfectly
😊
I love this bandsaw box!! So cool! And the sassafras bowl is beautiful, too! The grain is amazing.
Thanks so much, Susannah! 😊
Phil fantastic looking bowl. Please do not sell yourself short you are a Master Craftsman

Sassy sassafras. Nice grain and color.
😊
Unbelievably gorgeous. Love watching you work. Such a pro.
😊
Ingenious! The master at work! Absolutely love it!👏👏👏💕🇬🇧
Thank you, Maud! Pretty grain in this one. 😊
WOW WOW WOW. Band Saw box is beautiful. Have never heard of one. ( no reason I should have😲). Recipients of the 2 you gave away are blessed.
Thanks for sharing on this video. Great work on the bowl. I enjoy your creations and that you do not have an assembly line of items that all look alike. Each piece is unique in it's own right, square, round, tall, short, etc. And you were able to enjoy the words aroma. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching, RK! I'm glad you like them! 😊
Beautiful! You’re so talented
😊
As a child/teen I lived in the forest and there was quite a bit of sassafras mixed in. (Michigan) I used to break off the new branches, peel the green bark off, and chew the pulp. It was sort of a strong mint/root beer flavor to it. I’ve never seen a large piece of sassafras as the trees were less than 8” in diameter. That’s all gone now because mostly Chicago people had their vacation homes built in that area and cleared a lot of the forest around my childhood home. Kinda cool to see that sassafras can be turned.
😊
I really like it too. It's different; I prefer different. Prayers!
😊
I admire your creations! Unfortunately I don't understand english, but just by looking at your hands I'm learning so much. Thank you!
Thank you very much, Gianmaria! 😊

😊
Well, Rats! My smell-O-vision module went out on my laptop. Beautiful piece Phil.
😊
Hi Phil Beautiful as always! I had to write you, I'm sitting here catching up with your posts recovering from rotator cuff surgery not able to do my favorite things, kayak fishing and wood turning:( My 14 yr old son walked in and asked watcha doin Dad? I'm watching my favorite wood turner , he watched a bit and remarked that you had a pleasant voice and manner. He said you are the Bob Ross of wood turning. How right he is. Thank you so much for your inspiration over the years.
Thank you very much, Robert! Tell your son I appreciate his comment, too! 😊
Looks like an old farm house wash basin very nice!
😊
Love the rim at top of bowl. Georgous bowl.
😊
A Master of wood turning, with amazing skills who I really don't think you know how good you are, well we love watching you here in Britain another fantastic piece.
Thank you kindly, Robert in Britain! 😊
Reminds me of the ash trees we have in our area. Beautiful piece of wood with excellent turning and finishing. Luv it. ❤ 👍👍👍
The grain definitely looks like Ash, Steve, but it's much softer. Glad you like it, thank you! 😊
l love that bandsaw box and the bowl is very nice too
😊
Thank you for another great video. You make turning look so easy. I’m sorry you’re not feeling well. I hope you are able to get back to woodworking again even if you can’t do videos. Take care of yourself. You are in my prayers.
😊
O wow,another beautiful bow
😊
Outstanding very beautiful wood love it Phil take care and God bless
😊
Irridescence and great grain, with the contrasting bark. A Lovely piece, Phil.
Agreed, a great piece of wood, Richard! 😊
Beautiful as always Phil, thank you so much for sharing.
😊
Beautiful bowl, really shows off the grain.
😊
Really lovely. What a gorgeous grain pattern. Beautifully worked Phil
Thank you, Barry! 😊
The way you handled the bark was really cool. The broken bits didn't hold you back, and the gentle sanding strikes a great balance between smooth and rough. You are definitely inspiring imitation!
😊
oh my goodness Phil... that is a gorgeous bowl...
😊
The wood smells nice but the roots are where you can really smell root beer. We used to call it dynamite wood because of how it crackles and pops in the wood stove. The bowl is beautiful!
😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop bark
What finish do you use on the bark of your live edge bowls.
@@cobenelkins3843 The same finish that I apply to the body of the bowl, Coben.
Nice job Phil & good looking bandsaw box too!
😊
I really like the swirl pattern of the wood!
😊
Sassafras trees have three different shaped leaves. Very nice looking bowl.
Thank you for the video, take care of yourself and get well soon.
Paul.
😊
Great job! Super!
Thank you! Cheers!
Damn Phil you are the man.
😊
Very nice, Phil! Square was the right call.
😊
Hi Phil
Another Gem,beautiful contrast with bark edge, just what I needed to get me out to the lathe this afternoon.
Thanks for sharing
Regards
😊
Hey Phil, you do a much better job with that wood than I do! It's a soft hardwood and truly isn't so easy to make it look nice as you've done, you've got to have sharp tools to make that grain lay down. Thanks for the vid.
Thanks for the comment and the wood, Robert! 😊
I like the bark structure, hopefully will be highlighted in some form!
😊
Very informative about sassafras, and of course another beautiful bowl, Uncle Phil ❣️👍✌️
😊
Great work, blown away by your bandsaw box, more evidence of you artist skill.
😊
In the sassafras bowl I saw a bunny’s head , looking in the direction of the rot spot. Otis in the grain of the wood. Sure hope you can see it too.
A beautiful bowl as always.
Oh wow! 😊
Phil, lovely bowl. Another use for Sassafras are the ground leaves, which when ground to a powder produces a product called file’, as in file’ gumbo. File’ is used in Louisiana cooking as a thickness agent as well as a flavor enhancer.
😊
Your are an inspiration to so many of us. Your craftsmanship, creativity and you teaching abilities are outstanding. I love how there is no piece of wood that you cannot create something with. You are fantastic Phil Anderson!
😊
i hope you feel better soon phil !sorry you are under the weather.bless you.
😊
As always, beautiful work. Loving the live edge on the bowl. The bandsaw box is awesome with the bark on the front. Thank you for sharing
Thank you! Cheers!
Lovely bowl. Thank you for your time and talents 💞. Hopefully see you soon get well and rest , love from Wales UK.
😊
Very nice bowl! Enjoyed seeing your bandsaw box too. You did an amazing job mating the cut lines!
😊
Hi Phil, Normal services have been resumed in my household, Friday morning, Cup of Tea and a Phil Video to watch. Bliss!!!
I love the raised rim around the bowl, it looks fantastic.
As others have said, as well as you, the grain in this piece is wonderful.
Great work my firend.
Take care.
Cheers, Huw
