Covid visiting our house so spending my time with old Phil videos. This is very beautiful as are all your projects with natural features and bark.
Uh-oh, I hope it passes quickly. Be well, stay safe, Jeanette! 😊
Beautiful piece Phil. And yes, it is art. Same as a sculptor taking a block of stone, working their magic, and ending up with The statue of David, or whatever else they can imagine. Dont sell yourself short.
Best part about being a wood turner is each piece we do, is the only one of it's kind in the whole world. A painting can be forged, as can a statue. But each bowl, platter, vase, is unique, and cannot be duplicated.
Thanks once again for sharing your art with us.
Thank you, Mark! We are going to have to disagree on this point. I'm not saying I don't have any skill at all, though I still feel very much like I'm learning every day. What I'm trying to say is there are SOME woods that are just special, they have unique characteristics, they have a grain pattern or beautiful heavy bark that other woods don't have. Compare this bowl to a bowl the most skilled turner could get out of a block of say, Maple, of the same size but without bark. Maybe it's a matter of preference, but I'll take this piece any day of the week. But I do agree with you, each turning is unique. Thank you so much for taking your time to watch and for your well thought out comment, much appreciated!
Phil
Fantastic result, Phil. Cherry plum grows around here. None have fallen in our recent storms, so their inner beauty will continue to form.
It's such a beautiful wood! 😊
Great pierce Phil I would love to see tuffys face when he puts these pieces into the box for shipping then see it again when you transform it into something spectacular. I guess he has a great sense of humour but a great sense of delivering it to the right person with vision 👍
Tuffy is a gem, Jeff! 😊
As usual... Phil creates another magnificent masterpiece...
😊
Sure it was a work of art by nature .
But without you?
Beautiful !
Carsten Sweden
Thank you, Carsten! 😊 Cheers!

Thank you very much! 😊
Hi Phil this bowl is breathtakingly beautiful and stunning the grain is something to dream about. I am a lady of 72 and not a woodturner and my husband and just love wood. I enjoy every minute of everything I watch.
Thank you for taking your time to watch and comment, Kobie, I really appreciate that!
Phil
Great work as always. Your work is wonderful and your approach to sharing your work is a joy to watch.
Thank you so much, Mark! 😊
Awesome bowl! Love the wood. Great work. Always enjoy your videos
Thank you very much, James, I'm really glad you are watching and commenting!
Phil
Made me chuckle when you talked about taking out the live centre... I learned that lesson the first time I punched a wee hole in my elbow.
Such beautiful wood this, the character in the bark is amazing. You've done it justice.
Slowly getting through your back catalogue, meastro. ;)
Jay
Thank you, Jay! I think it probably happens to all of us. 😊
Work of art it is. The bark is gorgeous. You are very talented!
Thank you for spending time with me, I appreciate that and your comments! 😊

Yes Phil, It is definitely a beautiful work of art! Great job show casing the natural beauty!💕
😊
Another very pretty piece of wood that you have made into a beautiful art piece. 15:14, Mike Peace calls that wood turner’s elbow when you put the live center into your arm
Thank you, Mark! 😊 Yeah, it only takes one time before you get smart and take that live center out! LOL!
Nice job Phil. Love the odd ones.
Thank you, Sid! I like the odd ones, too, and once you start doing them it's hard to do anything, plain!
Phil
Hi Phil,
Beautiful bowl!
The bark and wood grain are fantastic,,,,,not to mention the finish you gave it!
I laughed when you couldn't remember what the Forstner bit was,,,,a friendly laugh cuz I do the same thing ALL the time!
Thanks for the video and the laugh!
Tom
Hi Tom! Thank you very much! Yeah, getting very forgetful, lately. Just comes with the territory at this age, I guess, but it's embarrassing when everyone gets to see it! LOL!
Phil
Beautiful job Phil, looks great!
Thank you so much, Bruce!
Phil
That's beautiful, Phil!! When I first saw the piece of wood I was sure it was going to be impossible to do anything with it. I'm constantly amazed by you and your peers who can "see" what the wood ”wants to be". Thank you for letting us see the beauty within the ordinary!!
Thank you so much, Phil, for taking your time to watch and for your comment and kind words, much appreciated!

Thank you, Cortland, I appreciate it!
Phil
I'm something I just found I turn small pieces with live edges bike twig pots and I use a shoe brush to polish the live-edge after I put the works really great and does not mess up the live-edge the bark shines like a shoe
Thanks for the tip, Bill!
Phil
I’ve run out of words to describe how beautiful the bowl is and how awesome your works of art are so I’ll just say I love it 😍
And I'll just say, I love that you watch and comment, Tommy, thank you!
Phil
Well done, Phil. Another beautiful piece. Thanks for letting us into your shop!
Thank you very much for taking your time to watch and comment, Lee, I really appreciate it!
Phil
Another absolutely beautiful work of art with fantastic grain. I know you always say that the wood will tell you what to do and not the other way around.
Thank you very much, William! Yup, the wood is the boss!
Phil
Beautiful wood and lovely piece once again Phil!

Phil
Excellent video. Thanks for the information on how you finish the surface. Nice teaching.
Thank you so much, mtnphish! I'm really glad I can be of some help.
Phil
I love everything about this piece Phil. The outside shape, the live edge, the shape and depth of the interior, the grain, all of it. You certainly revealed what nature had hidden in there! Loved watching this one come into being.
Awesome! Thank you, Stevan! 😊
I thoroughly enjoy watching you expose the art inside !
Yes a work of art
Thank you, Bram, I'm really glad you like it!
Phil
Fantastic Phil, nature did a great job, so did you. Chapeau like the French say👍👍.
Thank You Phil....nice job...without the bark it would just be another pretty bowl...The bark, spalting, worm holes and your careful turning/finishing are what I think turns a piece of use-to-be firewood into something to be admired...tm
Thank you, Jeff! Agreed, it's all about the bark and beautiful wood grain!
Phil
Wow!! Nice bowl!
Thank you, Bennett! 😀

Thank you so much, Karl! That's exactly how I feel about it, nature and me, working together.
Phil
Phil, I very much appreciate the level of detail of your instruction in this video. The types of tools and materials, the angles of tools and sanders and the rationale is very helpful too me. I love your work! Thank You!
Such a very kind comment, Mike. Thank you so much, I really appreciate you taking your time to watch and comment.

Phil
This is lovely! Well done!
😊
Such great work.. love all your videos..
Thank you, Ken, I really appreciate your support!
Phil
This is truly a beautiful work of art. The one thing I have to disagree with you on is whether it is your art or not. You take the raw material, whether exceptional like this one or of lessor quality, and bring out the hidden beauty in a most spectacular way as most people can not do. You are too humble. Oh and by the way. The name of that piece on your drill press is the Modulatory Stationary Oscillating Rotary Discombobulator... I think.
Thank you so much, Dana! That name, I think, is the abbreviation! LOL! Actually, it's called the "Quill," I just couldn't remember it at the time!
Phil
Plum job Phil. Really nice result. Thanks for sharing. Lathe should be here any day now. Cheers John
Thanks, John! Ohhh, it's getting exciting, now!

Beautiful Job 👌
😊
Hi Phil, another beautiful piece for sure. Interesting to hear about the Cherry Plum, we don’t have that over here. Those pads (I know them as Scotchbrite ) are a very handy item to have in the shop, I used them a lot during my years in an auto body shop.
Good to see you & hope you’re doing well. Thanks for sharing another one of your fine pieces of art. Off to get some sleep now - 1.30 am here in the UK.
Regards,
Geof
Thank you, Geof! I had never heard of the Cherry Plum before, either, but agree, it's a beautiful wood! Yes, Scotchbrite! Thank you, I hope I can remember that for next time! Yeah, off to bed with you!
Phil
Thank you
Thank you for watching, Don!
Phil
I think it's ace would love to own it x
Thank you very much, Lynda!
Phil
Awsome beauty in that piece of wood that you so deliberately exposed, very nice job.
Ps. I accidentally stuck a piece of the white scotch bright pad onto my velcro pad and I said, hmmm! I cut it round and It works great! You might try it.
Thank you, Grampa! I have done that, too, but only for flat work. I'm not sure it would stay on while spinning. OH! I guess you are saying it does stay on! Yes, I will have to give that a try, thank you for the suggestion!
Phil
IF it holds soup , it's a bowl. IF it doesn't hold soup , it's a work of art.
Yup, you are so right, Dale, thank you!
Phil
Really AMAZING!!
Good video!
Nice work.
Thank you so much, William, for your great comment!
Phil
It is a Quill, Phil😊
Jim Brown
I'll just assume I couldn't think of the name of the quill in this video, Jim and that explains your comment. This was years ago and I simply don't remember it.
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop That is okay Phil, I am 74 and forget things I should know on a daily basis! I love you videos and your philosophy on leaving as much nature in your turnings as you can. We are wood turners, not resin turners. Lol Jim
You are awesome Phil. I just love this bowl. My dad was a wood turner. He turned a lot of wood from Hawaii like koa. I wish I had some koa to send to you. Have you ever turned koa wood? It’s the most beautiful wood. If I get my hands on some, I will let you know. Aloha from Hawaii.
Thank you so much, Colette! 😊 I've never turned Koa but I did do a small project using some my granddaughter brought to me from Hawaii. I made a short video of it: czcams.com/video/ytyGjEzGHp8/video.html And, yes, it's beautiful wood!
Howdy Phil
Your drill press certainly sounds like a Sears , back when they were made better then now .
I call that part " quill " well machinist do anyway
I have heard it called " spindle "
Nice hold down .
Yes that would hurt if your arm hit , probably would have to have the emergency doctor remove it !! or finish pushing it threw .
That Plum looks like it has a little burl started . Wicked rough bark . Beautiful grain/figuring . I have very odd shaped pieces with slits , comes out so nice .
I can sometimes smell plum when I turn some of the pieces I have have you ? Especially when I use a large bit to drill and a lot of heat is created .
Such a fine piece of wood .
keep on turning
Howdy, Bruce! Yep, they used to build them better than they do now, that's for sure! Yes, quill, I knew that, just couldn't think of it at the time.
I haven't smelled plum while turning, but I know what you mean. I am so lucky to have this Cherry Plum to turn, I love it!
Phil
Hi Phil. you are right, it is a piece of art. It takes an artist to find it though. Do you treat the area where the bark meets the wood to stop it coming off? Cheers, Huw
Thank you, Huw! I have applied CA on other pieces to keep the bark on, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. For this Cherry Plum, I've never had to, it's really solid.
Phil
Phil that is another amazing looking piece of wood. Great job of getting those shavings out of the way to reveal nature at its best. The bark looks great and it sure looked like it was on there good.
The finish looks great and those pads do a great job between coats. I think they would work better than steel wool in most cases. I need to remind myself to pick some up.
I seem to have a lot of old tools....hmm I wonder why after all I bought them new.
I am guessing I do have the same drill press as you do. Especially based on how long you have had yours and how long I have had mine. About the same amount of time.
Another great job!
Gary
Thanks, Gary! Yes, the Scotchbrite pads are, in my opinion, far superior to steel wool. Plus, they last much longer and you can throw them in the washing machine. When you wife's not looking, of course.
I know what you mean about old tools. I always find it fascinating to read an ad that describes something I bought new and use on a regular basis, as vintage or an antique. Man, what does that make me?
My drill press is the 12" variety with the narrow belt. Not the highest quality tool available, but it's been doing the job for nearly a lifetime so I can't complain.
Phil
Phil I prefer Scotchbrite myself and have used it for years. It works good for polishing aluminum as well.
If you use steel wool on an aluminum turning it will wrap right around it. Not a good thing. Scotchbrite works perfect for that. My problem is I have boxes of 0000 steel wool and I am out of Scotchbrite pads. I need to fix that.
Yeah sounds like the same drill press as mine. I bought mine at Sears and it included the angle table that mounts on the back of the regular table. Making it even heavier to raise and lower. I need to make a crank up mechanism for doing that.
I do have one machine that is older than me though. An early 40's Delta 14 inch bandsaw I rebuilt. I am to lazy to change the blade on my Rikon to a skinny blade LOL so I gave up a few square feet of floor space.
Gary
I dont know about "work of art" but its a beautiful work of Phil
Wow, thank you, Garth!
Phil
It’s beautiful! I’ve been thinking of the different things it could be used for, then I realized it doesn’t have to be used for anything, it can be just what it is, a beautiful piece of art!
I have a silly question. How do you know how fast to run the lathe? (Keep in mind I am NOT a wood turner. I don’t have a lathe. I’m just “addicted” to watching turning videos. I’ve learned a lot from watching, if I ever get a chance to turn something. 😄) Thank you! 💜🤗🦋🌸 ~ Roma
Thank you, Auntie! Yeah, a LOT of what I make is just for looking at, most isn't too useful. Not a silly question but I don't think I have a great answer. A lot of it has to do with how in balance the piece is and how confident I am in how it's held. Out of balance obviously dictates the speed by how much vibration there is. Just keep turning it up until the lathe starts to shake, and they ALL will, then turn it down until it stops. For me, the goal is to turn as fast as I'm comfortable with and a lot of that has to do with the size of the piece. The smaller it is, the faster I go, generally. Higher speeds offer easier turning, less effort, and faster stock removal and, bonus, a cleaner cut! Hope that helps!
Phil
madronawoodworks Thank you Phil. That is a great answer. I understand a lot more now. Thank you again! 🤗💜 ~ Roma
You are so right Phil not your art Gods creation that you revealed.
There you go, Kobie!
Phil
