- In 1865, following the end of the Civil War, Union leaders gathered a group of Black ministers in Georgia. They decided that newly freed enslaved families could claim up to 40 acres of land. Almost 160 years later, against the backdrop of national reparations discussions, Joie Chen visits Savannah to hear the history of this famously broken promise.
It’s not just the government that owes us, but many corporations that are still in existence today, benefited from slavery as well.

so many well said comments and think about this is the land buildable and if so, what for accorrding to that county or city department of planning and zoning? Does the land have to rezoned to built single family homes? Does that involve going before a rezoning board and a application? What are the fees? Unless a family has developers and builders in the family, what could the use of the land?

The slave owners got paid for the loss of slaves and some of their descendants are still suing the government for reparations. But when black descendants of slaves even mention reparations everyone has a problem with it. The nerve of that woman to downgrade the value.

Which slave owners got paid? I'm a lay historian and never once have I ever come across any document that provided compensation for the slaves that were emancipated. I'm truly interested to see such document(s), and history.

I don't understand how reparations can ever be paid to anyone, or how it would help for generational wealth. Even most of the decedents from the wealthiest families in America from those times have no generational wealth.

This was good. My only take away is that we should know that a lot of us were already here and not brought over on slave ships. Or even were slaves. A lot of us got our land and rights taken away during the process of Americas formation. The paper genocide of the US census counted us out. Literally. I've been saying this for years. I'd pay property taxes tho. I like water and energy and paved roads. I'd substitute that for leaving us alone.

From the beginning, the vast majority of Americans always opposed African slavery. Hundreds of thousands of Americans died in the war that ended slavery. It seems only right and fair for these descendants of these freed slaves to pool their money and gift each family of any Union soldier 40 acres and a Lexus. Those are the people who earned it. Taxing someone's family who had a family member fight and die for the freedom of the slave to pay reparations for the slavery they died ending is an absurd obscenity. But here we are, the people who ended most of the slavery on the planet are now supposed to pay for ending it.
Land is the issue not 40 acres, and a mule this was for the military, they know that slavery was not like the lie that was told. We must let go of that narrative, prisoners of war, not slavery. That term didn't come until the reconstruction, it was short for Slavic which we are not Slavic. We were already here, they know that, just a dangling carrot. Restoration is what is real, servitude contracts were real. It is time for the truth it will set us free.
