There alot of Black people who would be very grateful to have a Black Doctor.
Africans in America are usually doctors but not Black Americans
I absolutely would love to have someone that can relate.
I just want a qualified doctor. I don’t want someone put their by policies that look at color. I am not stating anything hateful only facts is what it is.
@@htorres236 I don’t take your comment as hateful, and I hope you don’t take this as hateful, but I’d prefer a black doctor because I know he or she worked much harder and likely from a disadvantaged starting line to obtain that white coat . I know that just from becoming a black nurse. We have to be nearly perfect. We lose our licenses for things white nurses don’t even get fired for. The proof of that is public and blatant if you want to look up your local board of nursing. On the other hand, if I need a lawyer he will definitely glow in the dark.

We are spiritual people and they knew that so they exploited this way back which is how they captured you by making us believe that God was white like them. Black physicians and nurses are the BEST. They are the ones who actually care about people no matter what skin color, ethnicity or nationality they are. They are very skilled because they not only love their work, but they are naturally hard workers. I appreciate you brothers and sisters. ❤
Absolutely, although there are great healthcare physicians from all walks of life i definitely agree with you on this one.
That's because they have to be twice as good to be rated half as good, and that is across all professions.

It's not been my experience. I've been to an office to have blood drawn, and the black nurse stabbed me so hard that I had a bad bruise because she did not like the fact that I told her the front door was still locked at 8:00 am, which was confirmed by another patient waiting at the door with me.. No, I definitely prefer my own people. I'm not suggesting that other med staff of other races are perfect, but I do not want to be around people who believe that the ONLY reason they could EVER be faulted is because of their race. And, to become physically aggressive with a sick patient is not compassionate and caring.

I remember seeing a dermatologist that said I needed to cut my hair because "Black people aren't supposed to grow their hair that long". It turned out to be psoriasis. I had an ER doc tell me I had a UTI when I had a tumor (she assumed I was a drug addict). I've had medical professionals ask "are you sure that's the baby's father?" more than once... I was married. I've had MD's dismiss my mother while she was having a heart attack. The list goes on and on. It's gotten to the point where I'm afraid of providers who aren't African American because I have no idea if they're actually treating me as a patient or addressing a stereotype.
These examples are rather exceptional. Most of us would treat a patient the same way regardless of pretty much everything. We have procedures in place for that. You shouldn't have such fear. Every physician's job is to secure patient's life no matter what, this is why we take an oath upon graduating. And it is an oath we look up to dearly. Best of luck to you and hopefully in the future without such events.
@@Guide4Ever it's not exceptional if it's a common occurrence. While I appreciate your well wishes, it doesn't help when medical providers think a patient's experiences are uncommon. That small bias effects the medical record you're reviewing and you end up listening to the other 'professional' that you've never met rather than the patient right in front of you.
It's important to seek out and find black healthcare providers when seeking care. Find and pick a black doctor as your primary physician or family doctor.

Thanks for your comment there are some people that are not of color who genuinely care about people of color, people we are in control, there are people of color that are highly qualified to take care of you if you feel you’re not being treated fairly. An African ER Dr. on a plane was turned down by a pink woman having a heart attack for assistance from a nurse. Can you imagine. She'd rather die than be treated by a more than qualified trauma Dr. SMH. Hate is deep.

I just watched a story recently about Sutter Health here in CA mistreating and discriminating against their Black physicians and so it sounds to me Sutter needs to take advice from this physicians leadership on how to become better and to stop discriminating. I mean it’s heartbreaking. This position had to experience this but at the same time I’m so happy he has leadership and a strong office team backing him up, supporting him, and calling out racial discrimination as soon as it happens, it is not acceptable and will not be accepted or tolerated
This behavior will continue to happen as long as people of a pale skin is in charge
It’s no secret that Sutter hospital in Antioch, CA treats or at least treated its African American patients like trash. I stopped getting treated there a while ago and going to other hospitals further away and getting better treatment. I remember going there in the middle of the night as a teen due to an excruciating toothache 9:59 and I was in so much pain I was crying and the nurse told me they were not going to help me until I cut it out and that no one shakes their leg because they’re in pain so they thought I was faking it because I was shaking my leg which actually is a way I deal with pain. She gave me lorazepam to sedate me and left me in the room with the door closed for several hours without checking on me. Every time I went there I was treated poorly like I was an inconvenience to them. My friend had a horror story about them allowing her grandmother to lay in her own blood for hours while she was dying. I can go on and on about Sutter health.

I'm in the same boat as these black professionals. As I'm a black professional who wears a white lab coat. But my discrimination comes more from my colleagues versus my patients. I'm always skipped over or The last to get the training or education in my department. Meanwhile all my white colleagues are the first to get everything. But I will say my HBCU that I attended trained me well, because they told me that this is how it's gonna be in the non-black professional setting. You will get NO respect. I'm the black rodney dangerfield of the medical profession. I get no respect

Does anyone notice how racism planted a seed of doubt in these two men? Just asking what they could have done to avoid this, or 'work twice as hard'. What pressure is that?
And the sadness I share with the woman about having to have the same talk with her kids that her own parents had with THEir parents. That's where I am and it's not a nice feeling.

Black and Arab physicians are my go to ppl. They really seem to care about their professions over just earning the pay that comes with the degree.
Living in Pittsburgh, I wish we had more black doctors here. It would make a lot of us feel better.

I face racism this morning and I’ve been dealing with it for ten years on the job in the hospital but I’ve never said anything… it motivated me to start my own online business and leave the country because I started finding myself becoming hateful and I’m not a hateful person.. it takes too much energy to be negative… I’ve been all over the world and I only have problems with one race. I’m appalled by what people of color still have to endure. Just know that many of us are listening, we appreciate you, and want justice and equality for all. I have a Black Nephrologist! First Black doctor I've had since I was a child. Oh I've dealt with two Black Chiropractors in the 2010s. Also my primary care has many Black techs, encountered a Black nurse Practitioner there! Makes me fill more comfortable and their're of course more relatable.

I have a black doctor. She is the first doctor I’ve ever trusted. Her treatment has made a world of a difference in my health.
Moved from the Chicago area where I worked as a respiratory therapist for 40 years. The hospitals I worked in had people of many races and cultures. The worst discrimination I saw was against gay coworkers. They were usually the kindest medical professionals out there.. I’ve also been an ortho patient since birth. We made the mistake of moving to Tennessee. Campbell Clinic has an almost completely white male medical staff. I was shocked. I’ve had 8 hip surgeries, including three replacements in the Chicago area……..The only one that went perfectly was done by Dr Melvin Harrington, one of the country’s rare African American orthopedic surgeons.
I live in Tennessee. I was born here and moved away when I was 6. I make the mistake of coming back at 36. I call Tennessee my He!! on earth. Don’t get me wrong there are some good people here but it a 50/50 split. I came back because my grandma had dementia and I wanted to my daughter to know her. I grew up knowing and visiting my great grandfather (her dad) and my son knew him too. But moving here wasn’t and hasn’t been a good experience.
The racists are the problem, not these fabulous Black doctors. Let the decent patients keep you inspired. You worked too hard, so don't be dejected. Keep your head high! 👏🏾🤎🩺

I felt the pain, frustration, helplessness and sadness from all the doctors. Since I am a black woman, I especially connected with the female doctor. When she told the story of her son. About having to sully his childhood with discussions about people (White ppl) outside your family don’t see the sweet gentle loving little boy that I and his family see. They see your skin color and they see a criminal. I had to have this conversation several times with my daughter. Each time I could see the confusion, disillusionment, more and more of the innocence leaving her little body. It pained me to tell her about the world. But for survival I had to. Thank you all for telling your stories.
It's not just white people, every other race (Asian, Latino) discriminates against black people (especially black men). I know studying/working in majority black cities can help because most patients are black, but you'll always face some form of racism.
There are tons of patients in Ghana and Nigeria and Congo who do no have enough doctors. Those patients need you and are not racist. Go where you will be celebrated, not tolerated.

Oh this is soooo true!!! Even being light skinned I get watched in stores. Had previous clients say they did not want a black therapist. One day i told my 2 children they can only get one piece of candy each, an Asian man behind me assumed I didn’t have enough money and offered to pay for the extra candy. He was friendly so I said thanks but no thanks. The problem is why did he assume I couldn’t pay? I simply didn’t want to overindulge my kids in sugar. So instead of being viewed as a responsible mom that cares about her children’s health, in this society I’m seen as a poor single mom of color with multiple kids that I can’t afford to provide for. Nevermind that that’s not the truth, it’s societal assumptions. Please keep shedding light on these issues. We will be heard and I know change is hard but those that say oh boohoo we are victims no honey just learn to treat everyonewith respect and dignity and then we can alllll gladly get on with our lives.

Aggressions and microaggressions are agonizing actions that Black people face constantly.
My advice is to be confident and competent and to stay abreast of the latest developments in your field so you can do the best first your patients. I had a white young dermatologist repeatedly inject my small confined keloid on my chest with some kind of steroid. Now what was confined to a small area is now spread over a much larger area of my chest. I had a white dentist who wanted to extract my wisdom teeth at age 69. I told him I have never had a problem with them and that was the end of that. I’m now 72 and still no problem. I had an Asian nurse practitioner want to prescribe me drugs for high cholesterol but everyone of my cholesterol values were in the mid normal range. My A1C was 5.3 and my glucose was 83. When I asked her why I need cholesterol lowering drugs she said, “they came up with this number 19” which I have no clue what that means. She want the prescription to the pharmacy and I picked it up and has never taken it. It is very important to be informed and ask questions whether your doctor is black white or other.
Lord knows why he didn't give me that talent because if someone refused my care, I would just move to the next patient, and if they die, they die. I would never try to force or convince them to take the medical care!!

This reminds me of a story I heard a few years ago. This Asian Women (I don't recall what country she was from) was going for her Nationalization test to become an US Citizen. She studied for over 2 years. Well when she got her test she got the people who were testing her or something along that lines with The Pledge of Allegiance. When she recited The
Pledge the people told her that she had gotten it wrong to which she pointed out that she did not as she recited the oringial pledge which did not have 'Under God' in it until I think1956 or 57. They didn't tell which Pledge to say. She knew more about the US Pledge then The Americans.
That is totally IGNORANT, that this clown was going to gamble with her life over hatred.

Black nurse here. I have had patients ask if I was a ‘real nurse’ and others who have refused to have me care for them. My solution= I cared for my other patients and let them spend their days with only essential care: meds, water and meals.

I truly want all Black doctors and they are so hard to find... I believe l would be treated better. I can sometimes feel the angst a doctor may feel when I come for treatment and I am Black... surprisingly enough it's not so negative with White doctors as much as East Indian and Arabic physicians... They do even want to greet you when you meet them ; yet your health is in THEIR hands.

I also say that I have no problem going to a black doctor, currently my doctor is Indian, and anyone who stuck it out to get a degree for becoming a doctor, gets a huge amount of respect from me. I want to live in a world where everyone has a place at the table, and is treated equally.

2 of my doctors aren't even American born as well as nonwhite and i would rather see them than over many other doctors in the same field do to one simple reason. How they treated me compared to the others. These 2 doctors saw ME not my health issue as well as listened to me and let me run things by them other than make choices for me like many other doctors have. Not in any way disrespecting white doctors as my primary is white and i all about love that man. To me if they are great in their field then who gives a flip about the color of the skin we all bleed red. Also Thanks to a black doctor who even though he couldn't really preform the surgery he still came up with the way the surgery as well as the 'tube' that is used for babies that are born with blue skin thus saving so many lives. (His friend who was certified to do the surgery did it for him with the black doctor telling him word for word what to do". A heart transplant or something linked to that was done by a black doctor and that is used today. Blood type was also discovered by a black man who do to stupid laws died on the steps of a hospital all because he was black and the hospital was a white only hospital. Before you judge a doctor or any one that is in the medical field do your research and find that thanks to a colored person you are able to have this surgery or treatment.

I’ve been seen by a black doctor and I loved it. She thought I was funny and we had the best chemistry. I’m Mexican American and thanks to these amazing doctors. True Inspirations to society!
Unfortunately, no matter what level of success we achieve we’ll never be accepted. As a commercial pilot jump seating to get to work I’ll get the third degree from airline staffers. They will see me in full uniform, credentials and still ask, “are you a pilot.” I’ll just smile and say, yes.
We have to stop seeking their acceptance. We don’t need there validation.

These African-American doctors should not feel ashamed for their accomplishments. If they happen to come across patients that do not want their care then they should oblige them and allow them to pick doctors that they want. Until we have self-respect and not grovel and not beg people we will continue to be treated in the manner that we are. If a patient does not want your care then it is your responsibility as a doctor to let them choose what they want even if that's not you as a physician. I would also encourage doctors when patients make these types of choices to add into their scheduling a cancellation fee. You're worth and value does not come from the validation of society. We as an African-American people have to accept and realize that the majority of people see and view us this way when we accept that we will be able to move through society smoother without being hurt all the time.

I felt my eyes well up with tears while watching this and then the tears fell. This hurts my heart so bad because it’s really a shame or so sad what Black people experience because of the color of our skin. We are not all bad people. We are human people just like everyone else and we deserve to live and to be respected and accepted just like anyone else.
Three years ago I moved to a predominantly White county and I have been harassed and psychologically and mentally abused the entire time by White tenants and the rental office will not do anything about it. Where does it end?
This so so sad, it hurts my heart to know another person could be so hateful and disrespectful in to another person. I don’t care what we look like we all have red blood in our veins, I a heart that can be hurt and we are all from God. Dr. Hamilton you have a sweet attitude and spirit. As a white man who provides primary healthcare in a black owned and operated family practice, that consists of five distinct clinics, with the majority of the staff that are either black or Hispanic, I can say the standard of care is equal to or exceeds the other nonblack practices I’ve worked for. The demographics of my patients consist of white, black, Hispanic, Muslim, Christian, Buddhists, atheist, Asian, insured, uninsured, etc., It’s an enlightening and interesting environment. I wouldn’t trade the experience for another. My boss sold all 5 practices to a huge healthcare company who shall remain nameless. It’s only been 6 months since that change. I am already thinking about retirement at the end of the year.
I have a doctor that is black. He is very talented, caring, and professional. I am white. I feel very cared for. Color should not come into play.
Every black and brown doctor needs to always know that black people have been doing difficult surgeries longer than white Caucasian. A black American doctor was the only neurological doctor that successfully separated twins at the head. The twins grew up healthy and both brains did not have any damage. Black doctors did cataract surgery before white Caucasian doctors. People need to focus on the track record of the doctor and how he or she treats his patients.🤩🥰😍🤗🤗
my daughter faced the same issues at Western Illinois University. She was told by the department share that black girls do not do well in the nursing school after graduation with a non-performing degree in food science she received a certificate of nursing from our local junior college it is now a RN, practicing in Illinois in Indiana, her white colleagues not all of them are Hostile Too Black patients by being unavailable with information and treatments two of my doctor buddies one a radiologist one a nephrologist stated the same thing you guys are talking about is not a medicine is an industry and technology. It's in construction. It's all throughout stem. We are always fighting to move forward.

This brings tears to my eyes because it resonates all too well. From my own birth story (mother turned away by Cooper Hospital, suggesting that maybe she had an STI instead of being in labor. Mind you, she was accompanied by my not just her husband (my father), but my Grandparents (a medical doctor and Psychiatrist Nurse)! I was crowning by the time they got home and my grandfather delivered me in our home! The same hospital put me in small dimly lit room (no bigger than closet) away from the other babies, because I was considered a “dirty birth” after being (forced to be) born at home! -Anyway… my own birthing stories as a military member on instillations were no different. Mistreated by staff (talked down to or threatened while in labor). Ugh
Dr., you don't need to change your skin color or ethnicity. You're BEAUTIFUL! It's their lost...not yours. Please don't lose any sleep over it. It they don't want you...NEXT! I work in health-care and I have no problem saying NEXT! I ❤love the skin I'm in and wouldn't change for the world.
My cousin was Chief Resident, extremely bright, and a superstar young surgeon at prominent program. Waiting in the room with the patient he had done surgery on, the white nursing supervisor thought he was the housekeeper (she actually said janitor), we were flabbergasted that this happened in this day and time where we have excelled in so much.
That is the ache that most of us African Americans feel… I’m a mom of 7; boys to men… “A” student, honor roll, respectful, ROTC… but they are black boy’s nonetheless and I have to have the conversation about racism and how Society views, redlines, profiles, discriminates etc…

@@MariaSantos-em5jv they do too then when an emergency happen they start screaming for us. What they don't seem to understand is demanding wht nurses/dr's increases the workload for wht staff. It lightens our load but our pay doesn't change. Those wp given that extra load gets real pi$$ed and they make those patients the LOWEST priority. I pass meds in a certain order to please pts who go to bed early 1st (I used to work evenings) then pass the rest and one of my earlier patients demanded wht staff. I had no problem complying because I knew what that meant: those 10 pm meds I gave at 9 was now going to be given 10:30 or later. I was right. She started screaming for me to "can you just get my meds for me please?" I'm only to happy to tell her "I'm not your nurse tonight but let me inform your nurse. She'll be in as soon as she can. " I never worked with that patient ever again and when she called me, I inform the wht nurse "she's calling for her meds." They don't understand that's "don't touch me" demand is one that we honor until that last great day. 🤷🏿♀️
The assistant cryed and its her first time, woman just imagine going through that from childhood. Hope that experience qave her a small example how Africans in white countries feel and go through every day.

I’m so proud of my brothers and sisters of color for making something of themselves. I have felt judged when I cared for patients myself. Like the doctor said the patients always had a quizzical look when I told them I would be caring for them. I too have been followed around at stores . You might think I’m black but I’m not I’m Hispanic and even though racism hasn’t affected me as much as it has my black brothers and sisters I have been treated differently because I’m Hispanic.
I was an occupational therapy assistant student and encountered prejudice during my fieldwork. As a blk gay male, i struggled even on the job to do my job as many of my patients were wht and many of them did not want me to work with them on ADLs. Ive since quit the profession as it was too much of a struggle to even try and do my job.
let's doctors get together and build our own
We need to build a medical coalition that provides Healthcare coverage to our people as in the past. I had a brain 🧠 tumor that an Asian doctor misdiagnosed as something else. I got fed up and demanded a Black Female PCP doctor. She ran tests and referred me to a neurologist and neurosurgeon in 3 weeks. The other doctor pumped me with drugs that I did NOT need for 2 years!! I am alive today because of a competent, caring thorough African American physician!

I work with doctors some of them Black. Funny thing is, the black doctors have a surprisingly high Caucasian clientele.
It's actually very complex. I'm a male nurse and nursing instructor with travel nursing experience accross 13 states and I can say some white clients will rather have a black RN or doctor because to them for these professionals to reach that stage means "they are exceptional" at what they do. Some also feel professionals of color will "feel added pressure" to provide excellent care to them. There are black clients who show disrespectful and jealous attitudes to black professionals and there are white clients who will simply disrespect or not trust a black professional. In all, the most important thing is not paying attention to these things even though it's hard, and focus on providing comprehensive care to your patients!!
That's because they have most of the money, so they can seek out professionals. Some don't have access or very limited access.
These doctors gave me chills of joy and sorrow and of recognition as an educated Black mother and woman.
