    Here's why my SunSun 304B canister filter was leaking. It was y fault, not the SunSun filter.

    I came searching for help and I figured out what was wrong with mine. It was also human error. Today was the first time I cleaned my HW-304b (bought it a few months ago) and 3 or 4 minutes later I had a LOT of water running through the floor. I was pretty sure the filter was well shut, so I placed some kitchen paper all around the filter to see where it was leaking. After a pre-nervous-breakdown, I noticed it was a matter of millimeters! I removed 6 or 7 ceramic pieces, 4 or 5 plastic bioballs and pressed down firmly and the filter became completely sealed. I also took off the UV light after watching your video and reading the searches on Google. It's been 18 minutes and no water leaks. Thank you very much for this video. Regards from Portugal!

    So happy I came by this video. I was “this” close to tossing my Sunsun, it was sucking in air and leaking about a gallon an hour. I thought I had tried everything but something you said made me realise that one of my trays was probably off kilter. I did have to apply extra pressure to close the top, so even though it seemed like I had a proper seal, there was a gap.

    My tips for avoiding leaks:
    (1) use a pre filter which I clean weekly. I only open filter 2 or 3 times a year for cleaning, maintenance and servicing.
    (2) have replacement O rings on hand. I order them on eBay from international sellers which are much cheaper than UK suppliers.
    (3) have plumber PTFE tape handy. It is cheap and effective for remedial seals.
    (4) check for leaks every few hours over 24 hours after reassembly.
    (5) Ditch UV light. They certainly work at weakening filter trays and filling with water, not convinced of any benefit to the water.
    I do love Oase bio therm filters and am committed to replacing my SunSun filters with them when they die. And that's my problem- my 2x Sunsun filters won't die quickly and have been running for 5 years on my 350 litre/ 92 US gallon tank.

      When you say “use a pre filter” are you talking about something on the intake hose or an actual external canister between the intake and your active filter? Thank you

      Just a tip. I recently started running all 3 with the SunSun HW 603 pre filters and they work so much better now. I clean the little pre-filters weekly (it's quick and easy) and I only have to clean the actual filter every 6 months now.

    Dan, for years I wondered what causes noisy filters. It's two things:
    1) The impeller needs to be replaced
    2) The impeller shaft needs to be replaced. The shafts can be DIYed by measuring the diameter and length with a caliper and cutting equal width 316 steel rod to size.
    In addition, bushings should be lubricated with silicone oil with a viscosity of 1000cst (I think you can use up to 5000cst, but it should not be less than 1000cst - this has to do with avoiding emulsification with the water).
    Gaskets or seals should also be lubricated with this oil, but I am under the impression that this only applies to rubber ones and not silicone ones. The silicone ones are red in color I think.
    Thanks, liked.

      I've used a food grade grease on all things Sealant - Beit rubber or silicone and have never had a problem with the seals. I'd however STRONGLY suggest against using vasoline (petroleum jelly) as it will deteriorate your rubber seals quickly.

    • @khachaturian100
      @khachaturian100 Před rokem

      @@willparsons32 "food grade grease" is somewhat ambiguous... I assume it's oil-based? Not to nit pick but you want something that doesn't react with rubber, hence the silicone-based grease.

    I have a 304B. Great filter Can't beat the price. I have had my UV bulb running for almost two years with no damage to the trays so far. I'm sure the bulb isn't effective any more. I keep meaning to buy a new one but I never do.

      Is this normal or it has to lighting continuously without blinking.

      Clean the seal on the top, and prefill it before trying to restart it. You may have to pump the primer quite a bit to get it going.

    If their UV light isn't supposed to be used 24/7, then why don't they have that light programable to come one an hour or 12 a day and then turn off for another adjustable amount of time? I call that bad engineering on their part. And like you didn't know that at first, and they didn't mention it in their instructions ( I assume bcause you've never mention it in their instructions and your reading of them) If current LED lighing can be set up on builting in timers, color adjusters, thunder storm simulations, this company cannot do the same for a simple UV light so you can program when you want it on and off for a day or week's time.

    • @MrMavhen
      @MrMavhen Před 4 lety

      I don't think so that UV can cause of that leak. UV is supposed to run 24/7 with no problem at all unless sunsun filter is a bad design and not capable of having UV at all. Shame on them.
