- We have finally started upgrading the filter (s) in my aquarium. We start by adding a new canister filter, the SunSun 304B. This is the cheapest canister filter you can buy on Amazon Canada.
In this video I will be unboxing the canister filter, we will do a full setup and I will show you what the best filter media is for this canister filter.

You don't know how helpful this video is. I bought this filter yesterday and haven't set it up, because I was too confused. I need to transfer the mídia from my awful Space Eko Pro to this filter. Seriously, you helped a lot. I'll be setting up the filter while watching this tutorial. Thank you and best regards from Portugal!
Thank you for leaving a comment, very happy to hear that this helped you! Good luck with ur new canister filter 🥂
I have been using the 303B and 304B. They are in my experience quite a reliable filters. Currently B
both are still running, 303B 4 yrs and 304 going 3 yrs. Just a tip to prolong it's use: always do regular maintenance (i do once a month or every 2 months), do not put too much filter foam and medias and lastly make sure you clean the propeller and attached it properly. I have beeng using the UV light ( intermittent on and off) for longer than a week and i don't have any problems with it infact it does help achieve crystal clear water. Nice vid very detailed!
Thank you for the feedback and advice!
I have been doing cleaning every 2-2.5 months so far. UV light i haven’t touched it. It’s been fine as is without the UV light, crystal clear water even with heavy waste makers like Tilapias lol.
I might be removing the canister filter for now since I am almost done with the Tilapias. Going for smaller fish this time with low maintenance.
Very good step-by-step process to follow. Thanks, boss!
Thank you very much!
You the man! The instructions included were AWFUL, but you helped me get it up and running
I am glad to hear it helped you out! Lol yeah the instructions were pretty bad!
I'm actually planning to live in Canada for a few months this July, so at least I know more about how to make my stay more comfortable than I did before!
All the different layers seem pretty great
Really helps with the filtration!
can confirm this is the exact same filter as the SunSun 304B I bought off amazon here in Ontario 2 years ago. I might have to get a second one because they are such a great bang for your buck. The one I have is currently one of two filters I have on my 75g tilapia tank, so good choice!
Yeah did a bit of research and it is the exact same filter lol.
Did you start breeding your tilapias yet?
Great video! I was trying to decide if i should try a sun sun and after seeing this video i think i will.
Thank you appreciate the feedback. You can try on Amazon, verify their return/exchange policy on the product first and return it if it doesn’t meet your needs!
Fabulous video man! You deserve many more likes!!
Thank you 🙏 really appreciate it!
just started getting my aquarium set up great stuff!
Sweet, what kind of fish you keeping?
Thanks for posting this video! I just bought this filter for my small outdoor pond. I estimate it’s about 200-250 gallons. So hopefully this filter does the trick! THANKS!!! ✌🏾
Hey, hopefully the video helps you with the setup. If you have any questions, let me know I’ll try my best to answer it. Good luck with your new filter!
@@MTFISHER Thanks you’re awesome! Would you happen to know of any way I can control the inlet/outlet flow? Any accessories or attachments? The filter seems to be almost too strong for my pond but there’s no way to control the flow
@Fotosynthesis858 So i haven’t personally tried it on my setup but there are flow control valves you can buy online. You will just need to make sure its the right size for the specific canister filter.
Awesome video! Explained well!
Thank you very much!
Tnx bro, I just got this and your video was really helpfull.
anytime! I am glad it helped you out. 🙌
Just picked up the Marine Color 370 w/UV 9w.... haven't set it up as of yet because I'm waiting for the silicone hose that'll replace the green that came with the filter. I.o the SunSun and marine color are All basically the same filter
But hey, who's watching??
Apparently by switching out the original green hose with an aftermarket silicone tubing type hose, there's a way better out (and in) come with the filter. Im just a bit leery of using the supplied hose clamps... I think I'll switch them out for a few good grade tie straps as metal hose clamps could possibly crack or break the ridgid plastic tubes inserts of both the intake and return lines.
I heard the same about switching the green tubes. I am waiting till it gets dirtier then i might switch them out haha.
I hope your new filter is running well!
great informative video.
please keep making them 👍
Really appreciate it, thank you!
Great video!
Thank you
Placing tip of hose in hot water for a couple minutes will soften hose and allow you to really get the hose on the fitting perfectly, when it cools it will shrink back to size making a very tight seal . Only issue with this is you pretty much have to cut the hose to get it off.
Solid information
Hope it helped! 🙏
I built an upper filter house that is the easiest to clean - ===== The closed filter like in the video I had takes a lot of time and trouble to clean
by upper filter do you mean a hand on back filter? or one that sits inside the tank?
Good video 👍 the fish need a bigger tank, longer. 6 foot
Thank you, i separated the fish, they are happier now lol
Can you explain how long to use the uv light?😅 Some review the uv light ended up melting it's surrounding including basket or anything that came in contact with it.
I actually don’t use the UV light because of the reviews haha. I honestly don’t think you need it. What kind of fish are you keeping?
@@MTFISHER I was planning on buying a cannister filter. It came with a uv light function. I'll use it on my goldfish tank. It kind a scary when some said it can melt the surrounding because of prolonged use. Maybe several hour per week is fine but can't turn it on 24/7 etc. I got top filter, sponge filter & hob now. Just recently thought about buying cannister filter.😆
@ling1255 I use it for my tilapias, and they get fed a lot and its been doing great without any UV light. Its up to u, u can try to experiment with it but always remember the risk behind it.
I would try seeing the water quality with and without using the UV light to see if it makes any difference for you..
get a hair drier or put the green hose in hot water to soften it up and it will slide right over the plastic.
It’s getting time to replace the tubes lol
I will use your advice when i replace them, thanks!
How does this unit compare to the 404b? Just a slightly bigger canister?
I haven’t personally tested the 404b, but seems like the differences are more cosmetic/visual. Might be slightly taller but they are both pushing 525gph
I just got my new sunsun canister filter and its oily creamy inside on the top edges and on the top black part... is this normal??? Should I return it??? :/
When u say oily, is it like a lubricant? Also where did you buy it from?
Hey I felt shock in water when I turn on the UV light.. any solution for this??
I would turn off the UV, i don’t use it and most people I have spoken to don’t either. You also have the possibility of the bulb over heating from what I heard (speculation)
Isnt that tank really small for size and amount of those fish?
Fish have been reduced, I’m down to 1 tilapia now, been trying to put out a new video, updated video will posted soon.
Why you put ceramic ring on bottom, im new sorry for questions
The ceramic rings will help break solid waste before it hits the sponge. Its to help prevent frequent clogging. I have been running for close to 2 months now without any issues.
@@MTFISHER thank you for the answer, i will try this, thank you for sharing your method and experience, more power and God bless 😊😊😊 thank you
Glad to help. Hope it works out for you!
Where do you buy replacement media for this
You can buy from your local pet store or amazon. You don’t need to search specific for this filter, you can mix and match to see what works for your setup.
Hey bro, I’m honestly lost on the tubing part can you help me? I’m
Not sure how to set the tubing up
Where exactly are you stuck?
Did you install any of the tubing yet?
@@MTFISHER It’s how to set the tubing up correctly, also the skimmer, I’ll be home in about an hour. I’ll reply again.
@user-so2bu3cm3r I would first start by separating the parts. Identify which one is your inlet pipe, the outlet pipe and the in/out attachment that goes on your canister filter.
Hi sir do you have an email I can send you pictures?
@@MTFISHER hi sir do you have an email? I can send you pictures?
Why all the air bubbles coming out of the filter?
Which part of the video are you talking about?
Bro which is the best canister filter for a 6feet aquarium?
Love from india ❤
Hey man,
a few things to consider:
1) First would need to know your tank size in gallons.
2) Knowing your fish. How many fish do you have and how much waste do you think they produce? Low/Medium/High. (example my tilapias were fed twice a day and they would produce a lot of waste)
3) Whats your budget?
4) Not sure what products are available in India and what stores sell canister filters.
@@MTFISHER is sunsun Hw 304B is enough for 6 feet tank?
@jyotiprakash7127 whats the total gallons? 6 feet doesn’t tell me how much water the tank holds.
It holds 170 gallons water
Sir which canister filter is good for 8*2*2 tank aquarium
how many gallons is that aquarium?
@@MTFISHER about 225 gallon or 900 litres water
The general rule is you want a canister filter to have enough GPH to turnover the volume of your tank about 4 times per hour. So in your case 225 x 4, so something that has 900 GPH.
@@MTFISHER which model number is best if anyone in market
I would use 2 Sunsun HW-3000 canister filters specially if theirs a lot of fish in it
Tank size
the one in the video is 30 gallon, but i have now installed in a 38 gallon tank
Am I the only one that gets excited when setting up a new canister filter ? Sorry my man need a bigger tank
lol its definitely fun to set it up, and those fish are long gone. Eaten and digested!
I bought a sunsun 3000 from "finest-filters". It failed in service after only 8 months, ruining the cabinet and ceiling below andI'mstrugglingtogetarefund.. I will never touch one of their products again.
How did it exactly fail?
Sunsun primary sealing o-ring relies on the clamps pulling the o-ring down into the tapered main body. IMHO,but wilth considerable experience as an engineer, this is far less effective than an o-ring being compressed against a flat surface. ❤ If the plastic used to mould the main body is too pliable, it yields to the outward pressure of the o-ring and reduces the sealing pressure thus water gets past it. This problem is not unknown .. more than one CZcams post suggests wrapping ptfe tape inside the anular oring groove. Basically, this is intended to restore the original sealing pressure .... but highlights the flaw design and materials.
@petenewell5377 I haven’t had any issues with my canister filter so far. I did add a few extra things to prevent/slowdown a leak. I put the canister in a large tote and have the canister filter attached to a smart plug that can be controlled from my phone. That way, I can stop the filter right away if I see water spilling. Been planning to add a water sensor in the tote, so i can be alerted if water does start spilling in the tote, didn’t get to it yet lol.
Still dirty yellow water.. lol.
way too many fish for that tank...crowded af...poor fish
lol that has been taken care of a while ago, will post an updated video of my current tank setup soon!
@@MTFISHER thank you❤
😊
