    One thing that intruiged me about these creatures was the level of curiosity they showed in the ruined house scene. They examined human ornaments, tools, objects and photographs without any obvious benefit to themselves.
    This showed some individual interest in the species they were exterminating, that was not related to their goal. Maybe some of them have thoughts about the species they conquer?

    if you look at the 2005 design of the alien, and the 2005 design of the tripod, you can technically say the tripods are like mechs to the aliens. mechs to humans are 2 legged mechanical machines with 2 arms and a cockpit nearing where the head should be. the tripod has 3 legs, and 2 additional arms in where the 2 arms on the aliens should be, with different purposes, the head shaped like the alien head, and even the bottom of the leg with 3 seperate toe like things on both alien and tripod.

    I find some of the points you made interesting. You mention that they may lack the brain capacity to possess empathy, however you never considered the alternative that empathy may be a hindrance and therefore disadvantageous or archaic. Additionally, they work in groups, so they do possess prosocial behaviours. They may not necessarily feel a need to be prosocial towards humans, due to the difference in advancement. We all assume that we as humans are not just the ones to define empathy but who possess the title of the greatest empathisers, and yet not only do we behave in ways similar to these aliens with animal agriculture etc, as between species, but also within the species, in groups always display an indifferent or disinterested appeal to empathy when a member of an outgroup dies or is killed. Something to think about.

    • @ProjectACHERON
      @ProjectACHERON  Před 2 lety +5

      So your saying that they might indeed posses empathy but are simply, like humans, incapable of showing it in certain situations and to certain beings?

    • @Lily-yf2rx
      @Lily-yf2rx Před 2 lety +4

      I suspect so yes, but it is fiction after all. If aliens had the technology to travel through space and come to our planet, this means they understand how dark energy works and furthermore how to utilise it as a means of transport. Undoubtedly, they would also be able to utilise fission to provide themselves sustenance. They could take hydrogen (which is everywhere) and turn it into any configuration of element or molecule that they want, such as food, resources, energy, etc. So, if aliens did come to earth, there is some possibilities. The most likely I believe is that they perceive knowledge as the predominant currency or value (as materials would be essentially infinite and therefore worthless), and they’re either mapping star systems or just exploring and observing for trends in life (one planet of life is only one sample). In this situation, they don’t need to compete for food, or territory, or whatever. The alternative is that they consider hunting a sport, even though food is a non-issue. If they were to attack us, it would purely be for an entertainment factor.

    I think the closest comparison we have to the Invaders on Earth is ants.
    Think about it.
    Ants create intelligently designed nests, cultivate other organisms as a food source, and as far as we know they do not possess emotional capacity (at least, in the same way as us). They react to stimuli such as pheromones and the presence of a threat, sure, but doing so is essentially autonomous. They may scout out and investigate unfamiliar areas/objects, but they don't record their findings like we would. They also don't have a "culture" per se, though colonies from the same ant species tend to display similar construction styles, tactics, and habits.
    Now imagine if ants possessed the intelligence to develop more sophisticated architecture, complex systems, or vehicles inspired by their biology, but they remained the same functionally: an autonomous hive driven by survival instinct.
    The Invaders may not seem like a hive from what we've seen/read, but consider this: we have no idea of their sense of scale or time. What if a planet to them is like a large boulder to an ant? What if the invasion is comparable to a small group of forager ants returning to a boulder they had "marked" a few minutes ago, or even a group of farmer ants gathering a harvest from a section of their "garden"?

    Spielberg has a vastly different design to the books, the martians had huge bulking brains taking up most of the body, 16 tentacles in two bundles of 8 with extended limbs for reaching, in the novel they built the tripods on earth as the gravity was too dense for them to move unaided, they even brought another alien species with them more like the small grey men so they had something to eat on their journey, the red weed was accidentally brought from Mars as seeds were in the cylinders when fired towards earth.

    I think it may have been a lack of immunity to pathogens encountered. We haven’t found species outside of earth... however..
    I would imagine biology has constants, similar to physical and kinetic constants. Immunity is a function of a living organism being able to survive overtime. I would imagine these species of alien thought that the microbes on earth were rather mild in their effects. Perhaps when encountering our microbial fauna they simply were not prepared.

    Thinking of their culture and society, it's worth nothing that we only see their initial front line invasion force, which is highly unlikely to be representative of their society as a whole. It seems unlikely that a species with no neurological ability to perceive the state of others is unlikely to be able to develop a highly urbanised, technologically advanced culture needed for interstellar travel and colonisation. Such efforts require the ability to function socially on a massive scale. Given the way their young are reared I think it's more likely that they are eusocial species, similar to ants or termites, rather than an antisocial/self-isolating one such as sea turtles.

    I always thought the orange liquid was blood that they mechanically processed and fed on. Or that it was human blood they harvested along the way and that they may be vampiric in nature. With their bodies perhaps used to latch onto prey and suck them dry with their fangs that are sharp but with a jaw that is rather small and weak. They were probably pack hunters that worked together to bring down prey larger then themselves by working together to pin them down taking their two larger front legs to grab the prey and their back leg to balance and pin it down before and sucking their blood quickly making the creatures weak and faint as they are being drained alive.

    There seems to be rather a significant divergence between the Martians depicted in the 2005 film and the original novel by H. G. Wells. Wells depicted the Martians as being basically big brains with eyes, a slitlike mouth that only took in air, a grouping of tentacles for manipulation, and neither a digestive nor an immune system. Their entire means of obtaining nutrition was limited by their evolution to direct transfusion of blood from live prey. Having lived their entire lives on Mars, their bodies, having practically no muscular or skeletal system to speak of, were unused to Earth's heavier gravity, to the point where they needed machines just to get around. Their own world was dying, so conquest of our own warm, watery planet meant survival of their race.

    The orange liquid is likely blood plasma. Though usually yellow in color, it can appear in orange-red hues when it has undergone haemolysis, a process that is caused by red blood cells rupturing and then decomposing in the plasma. This is also common in smokers, as their blood does not receive enough oxygen. It appears they might have been at least partially poisoned through the infusion of blood plasma that had essentially already been spoiled.

      In concept art you can see a long curving hallway with a human trapped and getting his blood sucked out, I think this long curving hallway is the purple window around the rim of the tripod. In the scene where Tom cruise blows up the tripod, if you look closely at a orange window that blows up, you see an alien pop out of the window to examine what happened. Below the main eye is the entrance, a little hatch. At the end of the movie when they shoot down the tripod the hatch opens up and the sick alien crawls out and dies. The orange liquid (blended human) comes from the hatch which means the aliens tripods are filled with it and they swim around in it. The orange windows are filled with liquid I think, the purple windows are dry, behind the main eye is the pilots room and in the other eyes are the controllers of the heat rays. So 3 aliens plus the alien that pops out the window so 4 or more aliens inside

    Acheron's theory about the orange liquid is quite flawed. We first see the stuff when Roy attacks the alien's remote viewer -- my term for a mechanical device that looks something like a giant robotic snake -- with an axe. Since the aliens are far too large to be inside the viewer, it stands to reason that the fluid has nothing to do with their health and physiology and much to do with their technology. I imagine it to be a form of colloidal magnetic fluid that functions like muscles to move and articulate the limbs and tentacles of the aliens' machines. The hatchway the alien tries to use to escape its destroyed fighting machine is filled with the orange liquid because the force of those anti-tank missiles the soldiers fired has ruptured the containment chambers or vessels where the fluid is normally confined to flood into the habitable spaces within the machine.

      @@ProjectACHERON Plus, if people end up educated in the public school system; they do tend towards the same personality flaws as these alien beings; so it makes further sense that they're a rendition of the USA at that as far as their state.
      In addition to that; they're the "greys", well, in Latin America, the term for the USA's people is "the grey ones" in translation; another way that is a clear sign.
      In addition to all that: in War of the Worlds; it is canonical that the aliens be the same people as the nation they're invading; this goes back to H. G. Wells, who intended the novel to be a critique on British Colonialism; so in a sense, they are "breakaway Martians" in regard to the novel's universe; much like how the USA is a set of breakaway colonies that gained our independence through a war.
      In addition to all that, the Tripods are basically described as "Sherman Tanks on Stilts with some serious upgrades", well the Sherman tank was the primary warmachine of the USA during the mid-part of the 20th Century AD.
      And that doesn't even come close to describing them as basically "men without chests": G. K. Chesterton's term for what I'd describe as frankly a benevolent psychopath; someone with no empathy nor emotional connection to others, but who has a distinct grasp of moral law and a heavily developed intellect.
      They are clearly smart and thinking, and thoughtful beings; but to them, as H. G. Wells would describe, we are no more than livestock, useful perhaps, but *NOT* their equals in any way- much like how we historically regarded horses or cattle: useful, and necessary; but possessing no inherent rights whatsoever.
      And that makes sense, if I am right, these are frankly basically another species of "human": self-aware, reasoned, beings of physical mortal nature; that's a solid functioning definition for "human being" so why in "Superman" wouldn't Kryptonians be fully human for instance?
      And that's just for starters.
      Take the early PaleoIndians, or PaleoAmerindians: they would have taken advantage of any foodstuffs they could process as they sought out living areas for themselves and their families; same with the European settlers... so why would these "Greys" not, pray tell? It only makes perfect logical sense!

    Considering the invaders plans and their machines were purpose-built to extract and process biomass, there’s no way they weren’t aware of the existence of earthly pathogens or the threat it might pose to them. In order to even have those machines ready to go in the first place, they would’ve had to do a lot of study into the human body, human blood, earth’s ecosystems, and how those things could be used for the invaders’ benefit.
    It had to have been something more specific that killed them, a big miscalculation they thought they’d covered. Maybe a new kind of disease that recently evolved in a way they hadn’t anticipated.
    In the original book it was explained that the aliens had long since conquered all disease, and over time they had lost the scientific knowledge they once had regarding microbial organisms. I’m guessing something similar happened with these aliens, but they must’ve retained some knowledge and ran many scientific tests to produce that kind of harvesting technology. It’s also possible these invaders are a much different people than the aliens that buried the machines; the ones who put the tripods on earth probably had a vast span of knowledge about earth’s bacteria that has been lost in all that time since, and the people operating the machines in the invasion are basically kids playing with a loaded gun in comparison.
