Great to see that Yoshikazu Mera is featured on this and other recent videos on your channel. He’s a great countertenor and sadly underexposed. I’m not sure whether he performs or records much anymore. Well done for choosing him.

Andreas Scholl and Bach is such a good combination.
Andreas knows how to add very tasteful ornaments to the aria, and stays loyal to the composer.
Never vanity, always the composer first.
His voice has that noble warm instrumental tone, again that's Bach.
So for me it is Andreas Scholl.
Adding to this, Michael Chance sings the aria with an intense calmness and instrumental.
    Very beautiful.

Scholl without a doubt. His beautiful articulation and unique quality of his voice make the other counter-tenors sound like amateurs.

Only in Scholl's rendition you can clearly hear the lyrics... It is easier to follow it when you can look at it...
    Von den Stricken meiner Sünden
From the bonds of my sins
    Mich zu entbinden,
    to set me free
    Wird mein Heil gebunden.
    my saviour is bound.
    Mich von allen Lasterbeulen
    From all infections of vice
    Völlig zu heilen,
    to heal me completely
    Läßt er sich verwunden.
he gives himself to be wounded.

Didn't know Yoshizaku Mera at all but since wasn't taken by Scholl's version, listened to Mera like by curiosity. Was then taken to the point of searching more about him & hearing a purely beautiful Lascia ch'io pianga, so now I have another counter-tenor I may enjoy listening to. Liked also Michael Chance & found more about him & didn't also know him. Not new Scholl doesn't touch my sensibility, rare though. Very.

Mera is the solist countertenor "used" by Masaaki Suzuki in his Bach's cantatas recordings but each on other recordings. I adore him, in my opinion one of best 3 countertenors: Carlos Mena and Jakob J. Orlinski the others..Obviously out of the standings the legendary ones René Jacobs, Gérard Lesne and Dominique Visse!

Mr. Mera is 52 years old and only 4 years younger than Andreas Scholl. Andreas Scholl was actually the best countertenor in the world for Bach and Handel, but Mera is in a class of her own. Everything he did was absolutely brilliant and unrivaled, no matter what language or musical era he worked in.

Among these three Chances, clearly. I like Scholl more in the 1997 interpretation with Corboz, over time he has lost some precision in intonation, in my opinion. Among Herreweghe's interpretations, I prefer the one from 1987 with Catherine Patriasz.
