It's just a falsetto with disciplined air pressure control. I used to think there was some magic quality countertenors had that no other male singers had, but anybody, even a bass, can be a countertenor.
I mean, I don't say that to take away from your point that it's difficult to achieve this level of virtuosity or musicality, but I really think a lot of people think the countertenor range itself is more complicated than it actually is.
Too chicken to make my own recordings, but after about five months of practicing controlling my falsetto I believe I can sing competently arias written for Altos in their original pitches, and it's actually easier and less physically straining than singing in my natural register, bass.

Of course every nation's history is full of all kinds of events. I discovered oppression, centuries of war, heart breaking vileness, loss, heaviness. Listening to him it was as though their experiences were somehow there with him, coming through him. And it was a salve, as if their experiences and what they fought for helped bring the opportunities for living in peace, joy, and developing innate talents was realised in a great part in this young man bringing such purity, heavenly, uplifting, beautiful blessings to the world.

@@AlexA-lz4iw what do you mean? are you asking where it says that angels sing? if so, then look at basically any description of heaven in the bible where it describes the angels singing praises to god and if that's supposedly been their main pastime since the beginning of time, then one can safely assume that they would be without an equal. (assuming of course that you believe in the bible)

But you felt everything you need to know in this performance, didn’t you? His undying love for his fiancée, Arianna, piercing pain and despair in his heart as he prepares for battle, fully aware that he may never see her again.
In addition to his phenomenally beautiful voice, Mr. Orlinski’s ability to let us feel every minute nuance in the libretto (e.g., the way he sings/sighs the word ‘sospirero [I will sigh]’) and breathe life into the written words is nothing short of magic.
