- There are SO many amazing Roman themed or Rome era games out there right now, which is why I see it as my sacred duty AND honor, to let you know which Rome games are the absolute best to play in 2023. I made a similar list back in 2021, but since then, there have been a surprising amount of new and exciting Rome titles releasing, among them The Forgotten City and Expeditions: Rome, which I absolutely love.
What is your favorite Roman era video game, and is it in the strategy, rpg, or adventure genre? If you have thoughts about the video or Roman era or themed video games in general, make sure to leave a comment down below! And don't forget to leave a like and subscribe to the channel :)

Absolutely! 💯 next!
Let’s get it to 10!!!
@@AndysTake You're welcome, I subscribed a few weeks ago.
@@AndysTake what about "Shadow of Rome" & "Legion Gold"?
A few additions
There is a mod called "Aut Caesar Aut Nihilis" for MB Warband. It takes place during Nero's reign and it is simply fantastic. Let's name only a few things it features: You can join the Roman army and rise through the ranks and become an officer. There are many events that make things much more fun for both being a centurion and a common legionary. Eventually, you get an independent command and rise there as well, becoming a legate. You can create your own legion and customise everything about it. Then there is another storyline to become emperor. Then there is the Great Jewish Rebellion. You can put it down as a Roman commander or even start it yourself as a Jew. There are many special places in the game like the Pyramids, Arminius' tomb, Dionysus' Cave etc. You can become a Praetorian and there is also many great events there. You can retrieve the eagle of the 17th legion for Nero in a mission. There are lots of other independent events, special weapons and armors. For instance, you can become a Christian. There is the Great Fire of Rome. Boy, and it isn't even the half of it. I would recommend everyone playing it.
A Legionary's Life: Here, you are a legionary and serving under first Scipio Africanus during the 2nd Punic War and later Titus Quinctius Flamininus during the 2nd Macedonian War. The game is text based but it still does a great job of giving that feeling. You can die in your first battle to a common mercenary or survive all the way, maybe even becoming a consul at the end. It's also awesome and you should give it a try.
Grand Ages Rome: This is primarily a city building game but you also command legions. It takes place in the late republic. You start off as a patrician whose family was disgraced because they backed Marius instead of Sulla in the Civil War. Through several missions (missions are about city building), you go all the way down to the Battle of Actium and its aftermath. Another fantastic game on Rome.
Imma check it out thanks
I had a ball with Expeditions Rome. The Late Republic era with Rome in historical transition and meeting some key figures of the time, as well as atmosphere was just fantastic.
Agreed!
You should have included Praetorians HD Remastered, this rome era game was a legend back in 2003 and with remastered version we can enjoy it today again.
I’m no turn based strat game expert or veteran but Rome Expeditions was a brilliant experience and has become one of my favourite games
You don’t need to be an expert to love a great product :D
Spartan total warrior. Old hack and slash game on the ps2. It was so much fun to play. I dont understand why no one talks about it anymore.
Thank you for featuring Warlord: Britannia! Love the videos.
My pleasure, great game :)
Trying y'all's games now!
Hey Andy, just wanted to thank you for your content, it's thanks to you that I bought Fields of Glory 2 and I'm absolutely hooked ! Hope your channel will continue growing :)
That’s awesome to hear! :D and thank you so much for the kind words! Cheers!
This was a shockingly useful list! Thank you so much! Could you do a similarly amazing list with games set in ancient greece/hellenistic era
I love how the community is reviving Imperator Rome rn
Oh, Expeditions: Rome was a blast! I love the Late-Republic setting.
If you liked it then maybe check out Expeditions: Vikings as well. It's a bit dated but still pretty great.
I can't recommend the forgotten city enough. Something absolutely everyone should play through in my opinion.
This 100%
It was the best game ive played in awhile. So damn refreshing!!
Rome expeditino was one of the best games I've played, felt like all in one ...
Imperivm: Great Battles of Rome
I think this one deserves a honorable mention, was realy good at the time the that I like the most about is its sweet spot in fast pace rts and the campaigns.
I have yet to try this, but absolutely have to…
I absolutely adored CivCity Rome. a fun roman citybuilder game with a challenging campaign. focussing a lot on resource management. it is a bit finicky to get working on newer pc's though.
a legionary's life is pretty simple but really good
Anybody here remembers the game Praetorians?
Dude i played that so much in high school. I need to find it again. I liked it
@@Gardenstategreat1225 there's an HD Remaster available on STEAM
Praetorians is a Little masterpiece. The campaign is so good
Your one of the best CZcamsrs I’ve ever seen I truly hope you thousands of subscribers
Thanks Zak, MVP comment 🙏
i just love the chracter walking with a flashlight in expeditions rome
awesome vid andy i never would know imperiVm had a sequel
Andy, I like your intros. Subscribed. Cheers, mate
Thank you mate :D
I’m still playing Rome: 2 with D.E.I
The Forgotten City in the thumbnail made me excited & approved this vid!:) That game is not forgotten in my book
Same here, an absolute gem!
Why does the character have a flashlight? In antiquity?
@@skylerslack12 play the game and find out, don’t look anything up! It’s on sale on steam right now :)
In Spain they made a really good game series called Imperium I used to play back in the day, not sure if it's available in English but it was so damn immersive and engaging
imperivm great battles of rome, my first strategy game played and in my top 3 GOAT list.
I need to try this out…
IMPERIVM great battles of Rome was the game I absolutely loved more than any orher. The editor was great.
yes! i was about to mention this! i remember playing this game when i was younger, im sure it was primarily a city builder?
@@VAZZ8876 no it was a 2d rts, all fighting and no building. some time after they made another game from the same brand, that was a 3d city builder. also a pretty good game, very deep gameplay, but totally, different
I need a sequel to this video already!
Always on top bro
You already know bro
We are still missing an epic open world roman game... one day
I promise that if I would become a millionaire I will invest a couple of millions in it.
Such a shame that there aren't legitimate simulators of the Greek and Roman eras, with RPG mechanics, maybe even VR. Maybe in the next couple of years.
The Forgotten City its so(...) such an immersive journey.
Totally agree with Ryse. Played it back in 2k15 and was sad a bit 'cause it was over way to fast >.
same :(
Grand ages sounds a lot like an old have i used to love and play a lot called glory of the Roman empire. Just a city builder but with Roman stuff... I wish i could find that game but I'll try grand ages out thanks
A not strategy game but still in a roman setting and a great gladiator game is we who are about to die. A really fun indie game
True! I have yet to play it, sadly
Caesar III, Praetorians, Hegemony 2&3, shadow of rome (ps2).
I have yet to get around to playing Hegemony, I need that game to go on sale
@@AndysTake if you want the best roman one, go straight for 3, the 2nd is rather mediocre.
3 is the better game overall and has the better sandbox, 1 has the best story driven campaign (philip) and can run on a potato.
If I would add one game to this list it would be alea Acta Est, for beginners it can be very hard to understand the game mechanics, but once you figured them out you can have lot's of fun with it. Allthough it lacks the replayabillity of the other games
yeah, that's something I've been wanting to play! What in particular do you like about it?
@@AndysTake okay but before that I need to tell you some Things
1. I have around 40 hours in this game I am by no means an expert
2. The game is not good, don't understand me wrong this game can be very fun,
but as the developing company is themselves quite small and the game not that popular, it has many issues and bugs, that will probably never be fixed.
So now let's get to what's actually good about the game.
Well tbh there is not that much but one thing
The feeling - you do feel like you're playing for example Caesar and his faction and you wanna beat pompey and the senat.
So I'd say the game can be fun if you wanna feel the way Cesar did as he conquered rome.
Or as hannibal as he crushed the romans at cannae
@@AndysTake another bad thing the AI is not that good, at the start of the game you won't notice it bc your still learning, but after that you will start notice things.
It doesn't sound that good I know
but if you wanna have an unique experience, I'd recommend it to you.
Oh and another thing if you do buy and play it,
try to find a tutorial on CZcams, that will make things way easier for you.
another your first faction to play as should be Cesar during the civil war against pompey.
In my experience it is the easiest faction
I would love more games that do what mountain blade does .
I think the only one of these games I have currently is Rome Remastered. Well I guess I have mount and blade warband and/or the second one. Only other Rome game I have besides total war rome and remastered, is hegemony rise of caesar or something like that. Only have a few hours in it but can't remember why. I might have to check out imperator rome or that warband mod at some point. As always thank you for the content you post. P.s. tried barbarian invasion briefly a bit ago, almost got past turn 5 this time but saw a glaring flaw in my strategy so was planning on redoing it. Must have been the first time I have played it in the remaster since I got the largest and most advanced faction achievements, which feels kinda cheap getting it like that. Don't know if that was just how wre starts or the fact there was 5 roman cities left non rebel or taken by turn 4 between me and the ere. Atleast I can relax in the knowledge the ai is about as inept as me. I did want to play it with out cheesing it to much though so if I had cheesed it I probably would have been fine.
Well the, you have A LOT of games to play! :D Also, since you're playing WRE... I think you'll like Monday's video ;)
@@AndysTake I look forward to Monday's video hope it is some sort of guide to play WRE or that kinda video you did for the ottomans a bit back
Subbed
Question. What mod are you using during your TW rome 2 clips?
Ryse son of rome is one of my favorite rome games
Thank you. Only wished you would write the game names on your video though i couldnt know some of them.
Also you forgot the great PS2 "SHADOW OF ROME" which had an strong story and decent gameplay even till today!
Shadow of Rome I have yet to play, and sadly can't really be played easily anymore :/ but I'm sure it's a great tip :D
I need historically accurate medieval games
Same
I love belisarius campaign in attila
Any of these available on Nintendo switch or Xbox?
Next video idea: Gunpowder Age
Hmmm ;)
Damn can we get some of these games on ps5. Games like these are so limited. Bannerlord is cool. But definitely wish there were more.
Don't forget Age of Empires 1 Definitive Edition and the upcoming "Return to Rome" DLC for AoE2 :)
This is true! Return to Rome could definitely have been on this list, but I chose specifically not to include games like AOE or Civilization simply because they're not Rome-focused like the games on this list are :) I did include them last time however, just made a different decision this time around
If you want a good Roman city builder game check out Caesar 4
Have you played Caesar 3? If you have, I’d like to know your thoughts on why Caesar 4 is an upgrade. I just couldn’t get into it, but I have it sitting in my Steam library because I bought it on sale years ago. Love Caesar 3, and with the recent Augustus mod it fixed a lot of the legacy problems with that game.
Ryse really is slept on
total war rome 2 is still the best one so far, with mods
Thrs was a game Praetorians old but gold
Grand Ages Rome is the best game . City builder plus defender
I have no idea if you have any connections within Paradox, but if you do, can you try to find out if there is any intention whatsoever to come back to Imperator Rome?
My hunch tells me there are no intentions to do so. I have connections, but even if I asked, they wouldn’t tell me.
@@AndysTake Damn, let’s hope you’re right about that : in the title, and that we get a sequel.
@@MRFlackAttack1 I desperately hope they return to Imperator, I think it could definitely see some hype with a grand return. We can only hope!
Post Script: They’re releasing a beta patch/update now. I can only hope that maybe, if they get enough of a positive reception, Paradox will consider having another crack at it.
This is a real question. What is the best game to play as Hannibal Barca and/ or Carthage? And secondly what about the Spartacus rebellion as the rebels?
Best I know personnally would be the Hannibal at the Gates DLC from Total War Rome 2. You play a grand campaign where you can decide any strategy to attack rome. You don't have to go through the alps and you have to manage your economy
@@TheEnergizer94 👍
@9:06 what game is that?
Ahhh Rome
Classic
Wish u had chapters for the video
Have you played Hegemony?
i love all three games, but the first will be always my absolute favorite of the bunch.
Like I commented elsewhere, I have yet to get around to playing Hegemony, I need that game to go on sale!
0:10 - did you mention assassin's Creed origins?
Rome 3 confirmed! 😊😊😊
what about Ryse Son of Rome
i think attila whould be fun (its a good time period), i play much multiplayer battles so you need pepole to play whit so. Do pepole play it, many have said its dead?
Everytime I've played Rome, I've never actually played Rome. Usually it's Kushite
Civilisation VI?
Burning Empires is decent as well
No love for the Hegemony series?
So whens total war Rome 3?
ryse son of rome is amazing
It’s got a bad rap, but I’m glad I’m not alone in loving it!
The gameplay is just too repeatable. You just do the exact same things over and over again until the game ends, the only thing that changes is that enemis have more hp and dmg, nothing else.
@@greentuga691 yeah it’s not perfect at all. You can still love something that’s not perfect :)
@@greentuga691 and the story is terrible imo. I was like.. what?? All the time. Like, writing a more accurate or at least sensible story shouldn't be that hard.
I am in the 7%
The Rome era is fine, but not my usual cup of tea.
I would rather see more modern era games in the timeframe of EU IV.
Mowt of those modern ROME Games have just one major flaw, THE TEXT turns to shrinjk more and more hard to take for everyone like me habing some Eye-site problems
Imperivm civitas I, II and III
Whats everyone's favorite themed Rome game. I already have all the TW games.
Rise son of Rome is a good FPV game, but all the others can't compare to the total war games, let's be honest.
Imperium Civitas?
Bannerlord is to strategy/battle games what skyrim is to rpgs.
Does anyone know if there was a Rome game that lets you start off as a nobody as a Rome legionnaire?
There is a mod called "Aut Caesar Aut Nihilis" for MB Warband - look at the description in the first reply.
@@SmurfKenny thank you
I guess assassins creed origins is a roman era game
This is true. I mentioned it last time, but chose not to this time around because it's not really Roman focused, although technically it could've been on the list for sure
Rome total war is better than Rome imparator if I spelled it right I have both
Roma invicta!

Hopefully you’ll be saying “only 92% of you are subscribed it would mean a lot if everyone was subscribed” soon.

not "so" btw ignore that
no no no no esto no es real no no es real estoy seguro q no sera asi es demaciado para ser verdad
Hey first time I've watched your content. This video would look and feel much more polished if you had better segways between each title. Instead, you just keep talking like a run-on paragraph even though you are on a new game.
You could do a few things: briefly pause, flash the game cover, and say, "#3 Rome: Imperator" for example. *brief pause*.
Thanks for updating this video. I never saw the first, but love all things Rome.
lol. this guy didn't play Age Of Mythology
That's right, but he'll play the definitive edition
Rome-Remasterd is awful it has the worst UI of any total war and they have not fixed any of the bugs from the original the only reason to pick this up is if you cant fix the performance issues on the steam Rome Total War but seriously its so easy to requiring you to download one DLL file , I see you constantly not telling the truth about Paradox & CA games and while this may be your opinion you need to stop misleading people in my view.
Rome II is not a better game than Rome the key wording being GAME , Rome has better battles and sieges and it does not use the single entity system meaning your men can surround and make numbers really count , Not only that but the sounds Rome has are far more superior you actually feel like your in a battle but ill grant you Rome II looks fantastic its just a shame that CA could not make it more immersive.
My opinion of course.
Rome remastered does the combat better than Rome II though, the graphics got a huge buff over the first one and it's more stable, I really don't know what people expected from it
Rome 2 is not a good game if you compare it to its predecessors. They removed features and the combat...well its super bad.
How is imperator rome one of the best roman games??? Ever heard of Legionnaires life smh
Can this video have a MORE clickbaity title?
It absolutely can!
Imperator is bullcrap, paradoxes second failed rome game.
Imperator+mods is good game
Stop with the damn clickbait and screaming titles and I might just subscribe.
It’s not clickbait, it’s just good marketing. I tell you exactly what the video is about in a way I hope is intriguing, and then give you some damn good tips on what to play, carefully curated and delivered. Totally up to you to subscribe or not, mate :)
