A side note for why this movie has garnered a cult following: for those who were suffering from the strangest case of deja vu over the ending, just imagine Virginia's name is Sidney & Ann's name is Billy. Yep, Wes Craven's slasher homage Scream took it's twist ending from Happy Birthday to Me.

@@hanniffydinn6019 True, but Scream was never really meant to be original. Wes openly admitted it was made as an homage to the genre, & he purposely put Easter eggs all over the movies for fans to recognize. Some were obvious (1& 2's opening scenes lifted from When a Stranger Calls & He Knows You're Alone) to the funny (Wes himself as a janitor named Fred) to the "I see what you did there!" (Mrs. Loomis as the killer avenging her son's death in Scream 2 is a nod to both Psycho & Friday the 13th).

In my early days in Hollywood, just out of film school, one of the producers of this film came to me to write an early draft for a horror movie idea he was doing with Melissa Sue Anderson. His idea was a Coke bottle being shoved down a guy's throat. I complained that it wasn't much of a plot device and didn't get the job. Now, if he had said shish-kabob skewer... I still would have given him shit. The writer they got knew how to play the situation and I commend him for it. Thank you for profiling a second film I had a minor connection with.

@Marisa In cases where a tumour is located close to regions of the brain responsible for essential functions such as language, cognition, sensation, and body movement, patients are kept awake (albeit mildly sedated) during the procedure in order to allow the surgeons to identify and map out those critical areas prior to removing any brain tissue. This is achieved by having the patient perform various tasks (reading, counting, &c.) whilst specific areas of the brain are stimulated, and allows the surgical staff to remove the tumour (or as much of it as is possible) without inadvertently damaging the areas identified during this intraoperative mapping process. It may be worth noting that the brain itself contains no pain receptors, and as the patient’s scalp is anaesthetised prior to the opening of the skull, there should be no pain or tactile awareness of the brain surgery itself.

@@astrocitizen Ann took off the second complect of the clothes, the remnants of the mask, wig and carried it somewhere behind Virginia (probably to burn it off-screen), so there's no evidence. Also Ann wore the gloves to cover her fingerprints and the ceremonial knife has been taken by Ginny, so they've got her traces instead. And let's not forget that Amelia (the blonde girl outside) survived the night and definitely saw "Ginny" in the cottage around the corpses - that explains her catatonic reaction => one voice against in the court and others living members of the top ten also thought she's weird, so there's no much defense from them either.

18:26 At that point I was expecting the twist to be that Ginny had a twin sister that she forgot about due to the repressed memories. The twin shared her mother's anger over no one showing up to her and Ginny's 14th birthday, so she killed the kids supposed to go to their birthday. She was locked up somewhere until now, and killed Ginny's friends so she wouldn't celebrate her birthday alone again.
To be fair, this isn't exactly an original idea. It's partially inspired by the twist in To The Moon and Gravity Falls.

    • @jeremiahnapier2516
      @jeremiahnapier2516 Před rokem

That's actually the whole plot of another 80's slasher called "the Initiation". The main heroine had a twin sister, who attacked the lover of their mother when they were kids. That resulted in some memory problems for the protagonist and a lock-up in the looney bin for antagonist. The lover and their mom became officially married and their real dad, who burned up in the fight, became the garden keeper at the same asylum his daughter was. When the movie begins, the crazy twin escapes and starts killing all of her sister's friends, planning to pin it all on their dad (who was the √1 red herring throughout the movie) and eventually take her sister's place.

Your church actually showed horror movies? The church-minded indviduals on my country's censor board would have a meltdown years ago whenever a horror movie was shown because of the "corrupting influences" being shown. And yet adult movies got by them. Figures. ;)

I remember watching this movie on "Fear.net" on demand. Pretty interesting movie. But learning about how the movie was intended to end with Ginny being the killer being possessed by her crazy Mother actually makes me why they changed it at the last minute and added this "Half Sister" ending. he original ending would've been a great deviation from the traditional "Final Girl" storyline. Great episode man.

I love this film. The highlights are the birthday party, the cake, Melissa, the first scene. The score, the gym guy getting it. The jump over the bridge, flashbacks the dissection of the frog very scary in 1981. I didn't know the killers identity I was looking elsewhere. Surprised.

Huh, I would have thought the twist would be she was actually her mother, like the experimental treatment made her younger and they were lying to her or they had to use bits of her mother's brain to supplement what she'd lost, and the mother's personality was taking over to commit the murders. It'd be kinda a goofy twist, but it'd work better withwhat was there.

KJ Beast There are three more movies that feature the birthday theme, while also being horror films; ‘Bloody Birthday’, ‘The Birthday’ and, ‘Happy Birthday’, all early 80’s to 2016 films. Although those last two are horror, while also being comedy films. ‘Bloody Birthday’ is a horror film that shows three naturally born serial killers at their most destructive while barely being of kid age, and terrorizing anyone they come across in their neighborhood and than some, in part, on their birthday. It’s good for what it was wanting to accomplish. Especially since you want someone to just destroy the kids while watching it, because they’re such monsters. And the kid actors playing the three psychopaths are able to pull off terrifying.

Went to the to theater to see this film in '81. Downtown, classic style movie theater. (The Laurel Theater, NJ)
I was around 15 then, and a big-time Rock n Roll & horror flick fan. So, me and a friend would go down to see a movie once in a while, but we would first obtain a couple of 32oz. Malt liquor bottles and down 'em in the back alley of the theater just before showtime. Buzz!!
This was 1980-81, and along with "Happy Birthday To Me" (which I still love), we also went to see "Night School," w/Rachel Ward, "Heavy Metal" and "The Howling" (among others)
It was a groovy old fashioned movie theater, and we always made sure to "feel groovy" when we went in!
Good times, gone forever, but not forgotten.

Brandon, I dare you to review "The Curse of the Mummy Cat". It is a movie so bad that there's not even an IMDb page for it. If you can actually sit through it, you'll have enough material for 3-4 videos. People who claim that such-and-such movie is "the worst movie ever made" have no idea what a truly bad movie is. In fact, for the rest of your life, when you watch a bad film, you'll be able to say "Well, this movie was bad, but it's still not as bad as The Curse of the Mummy cat."
In fact, I hesitate to even call it a movie really, but it was promoted as such and sold on DVD so I guess it qualifies.

OMG! For 35 years I have been wondering WTF was that film I saw when I was 5-6 and finally I have closure! You see, my older sister was babysitting my brother and I and after we were put to bed she put on a movie she had rented. I was intrigued as she would not let us watch it with her because it was a scary movie not for kids. Jokes on her as I had already seen Halloween and Friday the 13th 1-3, and loved "scary films" so I faked sleeping and snuck out of my room and watched from around the corner. All I remember of the film was a a death by being pulled into a wheel by his scarf, someone getting skewered with a kabob steak (which scarred me from eating kabobs for years), and a a guy pulling out an eyeball from a decapitated woman's head on a platter. Needless to say when I first saw the new intro to The Return Of The Son Of Canuxsploitation-A-Thon, I KNEW that the mystery movie from my youth would be finally revealed and today was the day! Fanfuckentastic Brandon!! 🤟😎
Edit: I have been watching this channel for years, hoping that eventually one day one of your cult movie reviews would cover this mystery movie!

The Dr. Who cosplayer is Matt Craven, who isn’t related to Wes Craven interestingly enough. Out of any actor from this film, he’s probably had the longest career in film. He played Shia Lebouef’s dad in the mid-level Disturbia from 2007.
