  • Sometimes everything is not as it seems in F1. Ahead of Red Bull taking over Honda's engine project, and creatively calling the engines... 'Red Bull', Edd Straw looks back at some of the more imaginative names given to F1 powerplants in the past.

    I recall the Alfa Romeo-Osella story slightly different:
    In late 1986 Alfa Romeo became a part of FIAT which already is the mothercompany of Ferrari. So within the FIAT concern they suddenly had two totaly different F1 engine design's. More importantly Enzo Ferrari had signed the FIAT-Ferrari contract in the 60's after FIAT agreed that Ferrari will be the only F1 Team within the FIAT family.
    To avoid being blamed by the Italian press for taking away the little Osella Team their engine, Enzo agreed to let Osella use the Alfa Romeo engine in 1987. Of course there was no development on the engine, and for 1988 Alfa Romeo no longer wanted to be related to the bad performances of the Osella Team.

      Bruh Mugen is a separate company, not owned by Honda. Mugen did prepared the engines for the teams they supplied back in the 1990s, and even did some development work when Honda backed out for a few years. It’s not like Red Bull can just throw the Mugen name on the engine lol.

    Fun fact: in the 2000 season, all 11 teams had differently-badged engines, partly thanks to the Fondmetal/Playlife/Petronas deals. By 2014, there were only three different engine badges on the grid - Ferrari, Mercedes, and Renault.
    I really miss the engine diversity of 2000s F1.

      @@Altern8One BMW and Toyota pulled out after 2009, Cosworth pulled out after 2013, and Honda didn't return until 2015. 2014 only had three engine suppliers.

    • @nehylen5738
      @nehylen5738 Před 2 lety

      I miss it too, although I understand how it came to this and it has some good aspects. I mean the Hart/Judd/Yamaha/whatever engine was notoriously underpowered, the client Cosworth engine usually had 5% less power than the works engine and certainly wasn't top notch even in that version (except in 94). Peugeot blew it (:D) a whole year before it got things right on a chassis that was probably close to its betters, became great with Jordan only to lose itself on a shitty Prost chassis. Mugen-Honda just...vanished, as it outperformed its mother company's engine initially. Lambo missed its only occasion to shine in 93, not that it would've been reliable either way.
      At least now when a smaller team pulls off a good chassis it may perform well outside of Monaco and other slow circuits. Having fewer engines means there's more cars on track despite having 6 fewer on the grid due to higher reliability (more cars finish each and every GP nowadays than in the 80s/90s) , and lower gaps between them on top. So the diversity ending is bad, but the outcome is pretty positive as a whole.
