Cancelling is more 'top-down', like depriving them of their status, firing them or revoking a contract. Boycotting is just about NOT supporting, not giving them anything. I doubt any of us are in a position to cancel anyone really. Certainly I can't sack or hire (cancel) a loony celeb like Graham Norton, but I can stop watching him or attending his events (boycott). 'Cancelling', on the other hand, would prevent the event from ever happening, so that nobody could go.

Recently, Graham Norton in an interview at The Sunday Times, Cheltenham Literature Festival refused to accept that cancel culture is real and said that it should be described as accountability. Norton went on to describe John Cleese as 'a man of a certain age who has been able say anything he liked for years and then suddenly there is accountability'. Adding, it's free speech, but not consequence free.

How can companies get away with doing this? It's clearly persecuting somebody for holding a legitimate point of view and denying them employment on that basis. If that's not punishable or challengeable in law, I don't know what is.
Gender critical beliefs are protected by the UK Equality Act, but prosecuting these companies isn't straight forward, or cheap.
I wonder if a conservative organisation would keep an employee who expressed pro choices views.....
