She loves her kids she just can't express it in a healthy way most of the time because she's a giant narcissist.

Joanna Lumley is really good at that awkward physical comedy where just her movement can make you laugh, despite being such an elegant woman in real life. By the way the bottle is actually Stolichnaya (Vodka) which Patsy proceeds to drink directly from the bottle! No way would Patsy drink wine... nowhere near a high enough alcohol content!

While I love Eddy defending her daughter, my favourite thing in the whole scene is her reaction “after” she hits him, she looks genuinely confused at her mother instinct kicking in - almost like a “what the hell was that” reaction.
I love the genius of it. Eddy is always trying to fight her maternal instinct with Patsy's enthusiastic encouragement. Jennifer Saunders has so much depth in her creation of this character.
One minute she is selling Saf off, the next protecting her.

I love when she sticks up for her daughter like here and when she stops her marrying that little creep Paulo. Yes their relationship isn't perfect but there is certainly love there from both sides.

I love the very rare moments when Eddie protects and saves Saffy like at her wedding and when she helps deliver her baby. (And when she tricks her into flashing her chest!)

Every once in a while, Eddie proves she's a good mother. Its just buried under everything that makes her Eddie.
Eddie and Saphy is just like Al Bundy with Kelly and Bud. No one else outside the family will harm their family

Also, props to Gran for being the one to sound the alarm and defending Saffie first.
I live in Louisville, Kentucky, and used to frequent a neighborhood corner pub called Seidenfaden's. Sunday nights were "movie nights" and once the barkeep let me pick what we'd watch. I suggested an AbFab marathon, and she thought that was a great idea. When the day came, I showed up early (dressed as Saffy's dad, complete with sweater and tie), and Laura, the barkeep, put on a few episodes to get us started. The afternoon crowd weren't there to see a movie, they were just working class middle aged men just there for a drink after work, and who cared not a whit for British anything. Within five minutes of us putting AbFab on, all conversation ceased. These men were RIVETED by the foul mouthed antics of Eddy and Pats -- they'd never seen anything like it before. This episode was the third one we watched, and when Eddy punched the lecher professor, the working class men erupted in cheers.
Then the bar became a gay bar. AbFab is a favorite among us gays all over the world!
AbFab is a favorite among all kinds of people, not just gays.
But Jennifer Saunders knows who Ab Fab's biggest supporters are. That's why Eddie & Patsy have been to Pride and why Eddie said "All my friends are gay!! Gay people love me, oh yeah..!"

I love how Eddie just casually brushes off as "too many people here already." She does care.

June Whitfield’s delivery was absolutely brilliant in this show.
She came in like an assassin with that wife and kids comment
Everyone's body language is top tier in this scene, but I love Patsy's the most! She's like a cat! Wants the bottle, but is also very wary of said bottle and the hand attached to it.
The two dislikes are from two of Gerard’s kids.

Eddie reminds me so much of my late sister. A party girl and somewhat self involved. She loved her daughter (my niece) but really was confused about how to show it. Every so often she'd have moments like these, where her love for her daughter overwhelmed her and she did whatever she could to protect her (punching was not out of the question)

And very successfully too, at the end when Saffy is just beaming because Eddi stood up for her, you could almost shed one single vodka-saturated tear
Eddy and Saffy may not always see eye to eye but this established that Eddy will always help her daughter in a time of need.

I love how confused Eddy is by her sudden surge of motherly instinct - not like she's against it or anything, just that it doesn't crop up so often. Saffy having necessarily become self-sufficient, she doesn't really need her mother's help very often.
Slightly sad amidst the laughs, but this is probably one of Saffy's best memories of her mother.
The smile on her face you can tell the inner five-year-old in her said "thank you mommy"

is funny that when Saffy's in real stress. that's when she acts like a real mother. well there's that one one ep she stops saffy's wedding with a odd guy and slowly realizing there wedding's going to go wrong. so she just stopped them from kissing. she did try to explain but Saffy's to upset to hear it. but she got over it before the ep ended.
Single BEST moment in a show filled to the brim with stunning moments. 👍

One of my very favorite Ab-Fab scenes! I had to save it to my Fandoms playlist. I just love how Eddy simply walks to the guy and punches him in the face, no conversation needed, and how Saffy is so shocked that Eddy would stand up for her!

I wish my mum had had the balls to do that to my now ex husband who was emotionally abusive to me for 26 years. When she cottoned on to what he was like when he started the drama and manipulation when we were on a day out in South Wales several years ago, she pointed her finger at him and told him off. She hadn't done that before because she always believed that she should never intervene between husband and wife... But my mum who died in 2016, really rocked that day... well done to my mum! xx

Every time I’ve watched this scene, it always makes me wonder that Gran didn’t know exactly what she was doing and in some way knew Eddie would react like that.

In most episodes the gran character plays false naivity , making loaded statements with the insidious intention of exposing hypocrisy or just simply to cause trouble, all the while knowing exactly what she is doing.

Edina is a terrible mother usually but once in a while she proves to be actually one of the most loving mothers.
Nothing more dangerous in nature than a mother protecting her young, especially before, or after, a bottle of champagne.

They still are used by some desperate men, Having worked in a factory of mostly females in the past, a similar style is also adopted by some of them too. Although the old adage of times were different then comes to mind.
