    Join me as we go up the Dempster Highway from Dawson City, Yukon and cross the Arctic circle to reach Inuvik, and then continue on to the Arctic Ocean at Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories, Canada. This is a 800km dirt road and rated as one of the toughest roads in the world. There is only one gas station along the route at Eagle Plains. This section of the trip did not end how I wanted or planned it to... Riding my 2020 HONDA CB500X.

    23:30 I'm the greatest camera man ever.
    Context to what happened to the tire since it's missed on the video i think. Valve stem crapped out, i went helped Ken out. my truck (the Taco) was parked and set up so i didn't want to move it over to get a powered air compressor to fill up the tire so i asked Ken to roll the bike over. Boy was that a bad idea in hindsight... i think the beads sat themselves between the rim and tire as it was being rolled to me and not the fact that there wasn't any air in the tire.
    Ken, Was a pleasure meeting up with you and awesome to see the adventure up until now and now i get to see how this story unfolds going forward!
    by hell or highwater, you rode that bike through a rattling nightmare (the last stretch from Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk was loose as all sin, i had my back end slide out a few times.) all it had to do was get you to the end, even if it falls apart and burns down.
    I had a fan clutch go on the way upso i was gambling the drive the entire way up. 50/50 chance of the fan just sending itself through the radiator. all it had to do was reach the end and i didn't care what would happen afterwards.

      Alright Jan! Nice to hear from you! Thanks for all the help! It was definitely some adventure, wait till you see the lengths I had to go to to get back on the road 😂🤣🙈. I survived though, and it makes a great story. Hope your trip ended well also, maybe we will run into each other on the road again someday

    What a cliffhanger. I hope you're okay up there. That truck looked pretty cool and fearless going in that deep.

    Nice. I've spent a lot of time in Dawson. I used to work up there as a geologist. Great place to be if your thirsty lol. More bars than people.

    Did you see the pingles just before Tuk. 300 foot ice mounds. I worked the oil rigs there in the 70,s, and they used them for freezers for about 20,000 men working there.

      I did see them, they are quite amazing once you know what you are looking at. And also apparently constantly changing (growing, collapsing). That’s amazing about them being used as freezers! 20,000 people working up there!?!? Wow lol

    Congrats !! You made it ...great job !! I wouldn't be buying that truck after it has been through the salt water like that . Hope all works out with the rear tire . Enjoy the long ride back , you will be dreaming about pavement and no dust . All the best !

    Quite the road isn't it? I just completed it in June. I actually expected to be repairing a tire on the side of the road, but fortunately for me I didn't get a flat. It's pretty common up there. Oh, and Grandma's Kitchen was a great lunch stop.

      It really is quite the road. I expected a flat tire, but one actually damaged by the road and not the beads put inside my tire haha. Had I not tried to air down I would have been fine 🤦🏻‍♂️

      @@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 yah, those bead kits are supposed to have a new valve stem that prevents the beads from jamming in there. Maybe your tire guy didn't put the right valve stem in.

      Well my tubeless rims have a valve that is sealed in, but he also did not tell me before installing them. I would have told him not to as my concern would have been the beads tearing the tubeless insert, which ended up happening after all the air was let out and I had to roll the bike…

    Hello Ken, firstly I want to congratulate you on your videos, they are really cool, they give a lot of motivation and inspiration to those who watch them.
    My name is Gustavo, I'm Brazilian but I live in Toronto.
    In August I intend to do the Toronto/ThunderBay/Winnipeg/Saskatoon/Banff/PrinceGeorge/ArticCicle/Tuktoyatuk route also on a 2018 Honda CB500X.
    What is the average cost of food/accommodation (Motel and Camping) and fuel for 30 days? Do you think it exceeds C$6,000? Thank you very much and all the best to you my friend 🤜🏻🤛🏻

      Hey mate 👋🏼. Brazil is a lovely country! You should definitely do the trip. Biggest expense is gas and accomodation. Food is fairly predictable also, although up in the Arctic everything is expensive. You can figure out how much gas you will spend by your fuel economy and daily average or trip duration. Accomodation is crazy in Canada, camping would defo save you money. Budget is so different for everyone as it depends on your comfort level, willingness to Doug it, food quantity and quality expectations and budget. I’d imagine you could do it no problem. Lots of ppl do it with all almost nothing. I’d suggest camping as much as you can to start, so you can save money. Then hotels for rainy days or towards the end when you know how your budget is. I ended up spending a dumb amount on that trip, but I also realized I didn’t love setting up and taking down my tent for one night hahaha. Good luck man, will be amazing!!!

    Ha ha ha. I knew you would not make it back in time to get the bags you left. I would have used the valve stem in the front tire. Ha ha ha. Sarcastic remarks off. Always carried extra chain link clips and valve stem with tire repair kit.

      @kenshapperttravelstheworld8845  Před rokem

      Hahaha, I kind of had that feeling also 🥴. Unfortunately once the balancing bead got stuck in the rim and it lost all air pressure I didn’t have much choice but to get the wheel off and cleaned out. It is certainly debatable whether the sealed spoke rims were a good idea or not, but without those silly balancing beads I would not have had a (this) problem. Never again haha.

      I believe it was about mid-June. I left Toronto at the beginning of June so would have got to the Arctic mid-late June. I’d say that is the best time with decent weather and not an insane amount of bugs. You will have so much fun! Be prepared for tire repairs…

    Nice video! What is the longest distance between gas station on this road?

    • @kenshapperttravelstheworld8845
      @kenshapperttravelstheworld8845  Před rokem

      I believe it was just under 400km between Dawson city and Eagle plains (~378kms?). I did all the math and I was fine for fuel, however I did not account for the elevation changes or the on and off throttle, it was a very close call for me. Spare fuel is a good idea, especially if the bike is not as fuel efficient and/or has a large tank like mine

    Is it hard to drive on gravel with a bike?

    • @kenshapperttravelstheworld8845
      @kenshapperttravelstheworld8845  Před rokem +1

      It is definitely not my preferred surface to ride on lol, and anything more than an inch or two becomes extremely challenging for me. I think the rider and the bike make a big difference, but the deeper it is the harder it is, in general.

      @@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 I remember being on The Alaska Highway and came across a section of gravel that wasn't packed down well with loose rocks. There were two motorcycle drivers really struggling to stay upright. The annoying thing was the people in cars and trucks were passing them way too fast, kicking rocks up at them.
