  • Here in this video I will be trying to figure out why my quad is hard to start.
Is your quad easy to kick and no kick back in the kicker, and not starting, and only will start on starting fluid, chances are that you have low compression!!!! I did....

I have a 2001 that would only run with the choke on. I rejetted with a bigger pilot but the main issue was the reeds needed replacing and that fixed the problem. Idles and runs perfectly now.

I've got the exact same problem. I bought an 2001 Blaster with no spark. I replaced the stator coils and pickup with the Moose Racing kit. I have spark and fuel now, but it's almost impossible to start. When it does start, it won't rev at all. The more throttle you give it, the more it bogs. It takes about 6-8 kicks to get 100 psi on a compression test. I think I need to take the top end apart and see how it looks. Thanks for documenting everything bro, great video!

Your problem definitely sounds like a top end problem might just have to change the rings and do a light hone.

@@BTR2018 My rings were worn out (huge end gap) and the bottom one was bent. You can see a lot of blow-by on the piston where the ring bent. Whoever installed it years back must have snagged it on something. The cylinder is in spec, so I honed it and rebuilt the top-end with a Namura kit (great kit, I'd recommend it), it fired and ran for about 5 seconds, and then it locked up! I thought the engine seized but it didn't. The crank rotates freely, but something came apart or got too sloppy in the kicker mechanism and stopped the engine cold. It cracked my right-side case in two places! Not cool! Now I have to do a full engine build from the cases up. It's a really annoying situation but I'm not quitting!
A floppy kicker mechanism is a really serious problem. If you're reading this and your kick-start feels floppy & weak to return, or even binds up, ADDRESS IT IMMEDIATELY! I ignored it because I didn't think it was a big deal since it still started the engine, and now I have to pay for it and work way harder. Don't let this happen to you!

Ran fine. Fouled plug. Changed gaskets. Didn't change piston or rings. It stares if I empty the bowl once it gets filled up it bogs and dies. Think it's my floats in carb. Not sure tbh

I found a place that I can send the cylinder into, Lakeline motorsports I think they're called. You send them your cylinder and they bore it and it's part of a upper kit with wiseco piston and seals for $200. My only question is have you heard about this kind of deal, and is this a good price?

    • @BTR2018

Yes it can! Also it will happen because the stator side where the flywheel is there is a seal that probably deteriorated.
