DIY 'Tail Tidy' on the CHEAP!! Yamaha FZ1-N

  • I was unhappy with the way the rear end of my FZ1-N looks. But I was also not keen on the barely legal, tucked up the back end and overpriced Tail Tidy products available. So I decided to opt for a more DIY approach and modify that which Yamaha gave me!

      Ya, I agree about shortening the two slim arms. Reweld them and the plate would have been tucked up high and tight . You're lucky the tail piece came off without taking the entire inner fender off. Not so lucky with my GSX 650. One complete piece.... grrrrr

    Nifty little conversion, funny though bought a GSX12FA, went on 4 day (wet) trip to Brittany, Mrs and luggage got piss wet through and covered in crap, not understanding why as we never had it on other bikes, realised it was because of the tail tidy which was already on the bike!!! So had to convert it back to origional fender and mud guard to keep the Mrs and bike clean again. Always a trade off.... looks good though 👍

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  Před 6 lety +1

      +W3TFART Cheers! If only it was all mine! The rules are:
      1. Indicators must be at least 180 mm apart. 2. You must have a rear facing reflector.
      3. The number plate can't be more than 300mm further forward than the rearmost part of the bike (normally the tyre).
      4. The numberplate must be 30° from vertical or less.
      5. Numberplate has to be between 200 and 1500mm from the floor.
      Otherwise the sky is the limit! 😂😂😂

      @W3TFART Před 6 lety

      There are rules over here in Aus that stopped a lot of the tail tidys on the market from being sold not sure of the laws as I’ve got a Vstrom650 and it doesn’t bother me what it looks like .

      Luckily, in the Czech Republic the traffic police do not care or do not know these EU regs, so bikers here have a free hand to modify within reasonable limits. The problem is if/when I move back to the UK or a different, more stringent EU country.

    Nice cheap and creative mod Andy. I'm looking to get a newer bike in 2018 and haven't even considered the FZ1-N so have started giving one of these serious consideration as they seem incredibly good value secondhand. Can you tell me if it has a fairly sit up type of position not too much weight on the wrists, the bike I have now is on the sporty side but very comfortable on the back side.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  Před 6 lety +1

      +Peter Andrews Cheers Peter. It's a heavily underrated bike IMHO. Extremely good value and a beast on the performance side! The positing isn't quite as sit up as the versys was, but even so I've not noticed any wrist ache so far. That said, eventually I'll be putting bars about an inch higher, just to make it perfect. Of course this means extending the cables and pipes, so that'll be in the more distant future!

    as I watch your videos,I see more and more restrictions on what you can do to YOUR motorcycle."180 mm from edge to edge"?do they really measure that at inspection?do they really look for stamp marks on plastics???sometimes I think how great it must be to live in a different country,but then I see big brother watches everywhere,sometimes a little too close.the rest of the world might hate America,but I can at least put integrated tail lights on my bike without someone crawling up my ass with a tape measure.aside from that,I appreciate your videos.I'm sure I'll never see the places you go,so it's nice that you take us with you.besides the nanny state mentality,I definitely admire the culture,people,and scenery that's only a 1500 mile ride in any direction.it's a long ways away from the back roads of Brooksville,florida.thanks acm.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  Před 6 lety

      +Sean Donovan Hey Sean, thanks! Sadly i have personally seen the inspection guy get his tape measure out! And if there's no stamp immediately viewable, out come the torch and kneepads to find it! It's annoying, but I've learned to accept it and also see that lots of the rules are grounded, at least at first, in some semblance of sense. I must admit that I've ridden behind someone with an integrated tail light and although it looked REALLY cool, i found it impossible to really tell when the guy was indicating. So offset between indicators i can agree with. There are other crazy rules that will come up in future videos (I've got some cool LED indicators to fit) such as how a bike can only have a maximum of 2 tail lights! I'd have thought that visibility was key and more lights means more visibility! Sadly big brother is certainly cramping our style a bit, but at least it means most of the bikes are safe and we can all get on with the important part. Riding!

      @@AndyManCam it's one of the things that Brexit hopefully will protect me from, the German rules are so much more stringent than the UK and mostly for no dam good reason. The EU has just killed something that S.V.A handled fine (3 wheel cars with a forward two wheel axle)
      Hopefully the break will protect things like custom bikes better than the it must be T.U.V system.

    Hi Andy, You seem to forgotten something...ah yes its the plastic cover that covers the ugly metal frame, if I was you I would get a plastic cover to hide the frame, there again, I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Sorry to be a bit negative on your handy work 😪 PS: A grommet where the wires go through the metal might save a big short/fire in the future 🔥, just a thought. Cheers Gordon

      @AndyManCam  Před 6 lety

      +Gordon Waltham Naturally it'll not be to everybody's taste. No worries there! I like the fact that it provides a narrower framework upon which to mount smaller indicators while also opening up the view to the rear wheel. It's by no means finished and I'll be adding/removing a few things in the near future. Oh and the wires are already heatshrink wrapped where they go through the holes, plus they'll be shifting about soon too! 😆

I'm afraid I'm stuck in the lazy mainstream, I,E, I buy a bike, get a bit adventurous and add a charging socket and when I don't like it I sell it, of course that is slightly more expensive than trimming the tail tidy (or is that untidy, who knows).

    I'm sure the bureaucrats in all their wisdom thought they were making the roads a safer place.and in a perfect world where everyone paid attention,I would be deprived of my stupid driver videos on motomadness.and for the record, my integrated works excellent.superbright.I left you a comment about my ecu flash from Ivan.my mild fear of rolling on the throttle in a corner is gone.no snatch.totally different bike.be safe

      +Sean Donovan Glad to hear it Sean. I don't doubt that the one i was following was a cheap one. Nanny state strikes again with Ivans reflash. Again I'm certain from all the happy customers I've seen that the bike is awesome afterwards. But with anything like that here, unless Ivan has the right german certification then my bike would no longer be roadworthy. I know, who could really tell? Sadly it's a bit tough to argue the toss when you publish every step on the Internet! 😂😂

    It still needs something to stop the spray up over your woman's arse? Otherwise, 8/10.

      +ACE 999 Hahaha! Woman! She's never getting on the bike! I still have to wait and see how bad it is now. Also I'm still going to shift things about a bit. Maybe shorten further. Maybe even put in a horizontal piece for spray/camera mounting.

      Yes! Shorter and fill the hole, then I'll give a 9.7 of 10! :)

      +ACE 999 Woohoo! How about some LED action to get those last 0.3 points! 😉

      Beware of some cheap FleaBay LED sets! A sparkler lasts longer!

    It looked okay before. I really hate all this modification craze, especially tail tidies.

      An opinion that you are very much entitled to. I personally also didn't find the factory tail tidy too bad. Better than most in fact. But it was still just too much plastic and those indicators are massive. Of course this was only ever going to be an interim cheap and cheerful mod. The 'proper' Kellermann tail tidy and LED indicators looks and functions much better... In my opinion...
