    Fitting aftermarket handlebars to the Yamaha FZ1 is a job that at first glance looks easy, but in actual fact quickly becomes a monster of an upgrade! Here I take you through my experience and show you everything that I needed to do in order to finally get a more comfortable riding position, more steering control and, ultimately, a cooler look for my FZ1-N!

      Thanks Simon. I think knowing that an audience of millions (thousands), watching in anticipation, helps to keep a lid on the rage outbursts! Anger isn’t easy to edit!! I did have a few deep breath moments though. I think the only time I really lost it was when the camera and the light ran out of batter at the same time and I was up to my elbows in wiring! So of course you don’t get to see that!

    It’s only been a few years since I started to learn anything about fixing my own stuff. I used to say that an engine just looked like black spaghetti to me. This video really brought back memories of some of those early anxiety addled forays into doing my own repairs. All of those cables and wire bundles, aaaaah!
    CZcams content like this has really helped to see and understand how things fit together and work, and given me the confidence to take projects on by myself. Thanks for suffering through this bear of a project! I hope the new (old) bars make your rides even more enjoyable, Andy! Happy summer to ya!

Im of course very happy to have been of some help to you with figuring out the mysteries of that electrical pasta dish! 😁

    Wider and wider bars. I was for it a while. Now I'm not sure. The greater leverage one has the easier it is to overcome the natural stability of the bike and turn. However this has downsides. Every puff of wind that comes along shoves the shoulders which in turn telepaths to the hands and the bars. The worst effect of this is riding behind a large truck which buffets wind left to right. I guess there's a balance somewhere between clipons and long-horn cattle bars.
    Watching all this, bringing back memories of my sold 2011 FZ1 and all the horsing around I did under the tank, routing wires and airbox and TPS things. I never liked the place they stuck the ECU. But overall I felt like Yamaha did a quality job with the way everything was put together with fairings and fasteners. I got the full 150 whp after all was finished.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  Před 5 lety

      I’ve never really noticed the wind affecting my steering. But then they do say that you should hold he bars with the same pressure as you’d hold an egg. So when I’m on the motorway I’m not doing much more than resting my hands on the grips.
      I agree that Yamaha did OK with this one. Getting in to the guts is a faff, but it also goes pretty quick and simple. Of course having no fairing helps a great deal in that department!! I’m not sure what I’d do with more power!! I just want the fuelling fixed once and for all!!

      @@AndyManCam Yeah mine had the 1/4 fairing upper. The FZ1N wasn't an option in the USA.
      ECU flash is the only way to really open up everything the way the bike was designed to run before it got corrupted by tree hugging regulations. The source I used was east-coast USA. Not sure what's available overseas.

    When you go back in the winter to look at drilling and rethreading the air body look at Copper Dawgs video on the Lars Air Box Mod increases airflow with a K&N air filter a win win for the bike. You can also look at modding the flies improves mid range throttle response.

    Blood yell that wasn't the vid I expected it to be! Great stuff - love the way you cut to the chase and keep it interesting. I wondered if there is a time threshold you do not cross to keep the vid quality at its best Andy? It seems if I go over 20 minutes the quality drops drastically especially when the shot stabilises after movement - maybe its as mine are encoded in AVC instead of VP9?

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  Před 5 lety

      Thanks Neil. I’m so happy that in a 35 minute long video, you still felt like i cut to the chase! 🙏🏻. To be honest I’ve never thought too much about the correlation between video length and quality. Probably to my own detriment. Of course I’m lucky in that my videos all seem to be with the VP9 Codec lately. Have you tried tricking it by upres‘ing your render? You’ll end up with a massive video, but might force the VP9 use.

    Load of faff but it does look good mate! Any future vids on the old BMW bike and kit car also?

      Thanks mate. Yeah the faff level was high, but luckily the benefit is high too... because the bars are higher!! 😂. Sadly the only thing I own in that garage is my bike. The rest belongs to other people. 😭

      Thanks! Yeah the BMW is a bit of a beaut. Though I think riding wise, my yammi has it beat! 😈

    I had an FZS600 easy to change the bars to Renthal Ultra Low WSB bars brilliant. Then I got the FZ1 and looked and thought nah it’s just a 🤬💩 I have the fairing version been even more of a ball ache to do

      I had Renthal bars on my old FZS too. Super easy swap. I’m glad I finally did this though.

      You’re right. There’s never enough tea and biscuits in my video. Must try harder to make them more welcoming.

      Yeah, that venerable old dear is very judgemental! Not a single aftermarket part on her! Impressive that the owner has kept it completely original!
