- The 25 GTi with its 1.8 VVC engine is properly good when it's right, and this one certainly is!

Totally agree with the price, to an extent the high price/true value will ensure it’s survival.
I rather like it. When that car was new, I was driving a Mk4 golf Gti 1.8t, a 2000 car. One Summer evening as the orange sky turned red, I was heading South West to visit my Mum in Cornwall, a high speed night-run down the M3 and onto the A303, when I fell in by chance with one of these happy Rovers and, just in front of that, a Proton Satria Gti (the one Lotus fettled and that no-one at all in the World remembers ever even existed). The roads were empty but for we three young lone male hot-hatchers, and as a trio we began to conduct a kind of impromptu road test together, testing straight line speed, top speed and cornering in a good natured fashion, enjoying every second of the road, the cars and each other’s wordless company.
As we slowed down at last onto the single carriageway past Stonehenge, settling into a little fly-spattered convoy with the Rover leading, I remember thinking that no cars could have offered any more delight that night, that all you needed was just enough power, just enough grip and just enough talent. Any more would have been superfluous, and perhaps even have spoiled the fun.
The others peeled off on subsequent roundabouts with a flash of their full-beams, leaving me alone on the road again and pointed at Plymouth, thinking about the other cars and how I’d have happily traded my Golf for either one of them after what I’d seen that night. I still have that Golf, tucked away somewhere in my accidental and thoroughly sentimental collection of cars i forgot to sell - perhaps I should add a happy Rover to keep it company for old time’s sake. But where the hell would I get a Proton Satria Gti?
Thanks for the video, good luck with the sale.
Oh, and sorry for waffling.
That's some story telling
That was no waffle, have had a few similar experiences over the years. Thanks for sharing yours 👍
I should be sleeping right now but here we are LOL
When Allegroman said imbecile, I thought Boaty had walked into the yard
Lov it when allegro man drops in, that's a beautiful car, nice colour, great job on the head lining 👍
Coool! Good old Allegroman never disappoints does he? He's like a car conjurer, a motoring magician, a wizard of wheels🪄🎩
Roverman knows his stuff😄
Interesting how they decided to colour code the bumper trim and boot plinth, but not the side rubbing strips or door handles
Allegro man really does bring in top rate cars he is a really good chap and his work speaks for itself.👏👏👏👏
Reference the differences of VVc cars, I only have experience of the Lotus Elise S1 which used the 1.8 K series, I had a 111S, which used the VVC engine, despite the 25bhp increase, this felt like more as the gearbox used shorter gear ratios helping acceleration, I assume this was how Rover built the cars as Lotus just fitted the whole drive train? Always enjoy Allegroman, he is quite the character!
They actually built around 1950 Gti’s with 1450 sold on the UK market making them one of the rarest Rovers & hot hatch’s of the day and the last sporting Rover to be built. The coloured rear spoiler was also on the IS and the “Hairpin’s” were known as “Active’s” on the Gti of which were 16” rims as a-pose to the normal 15”. I do prefer the look of the 3 door not just because I have two one in Gti form 😂 £3k is great value just go and look what “good”160 ZR’s are going for now and it’s a bargain and with the rarity factor. These early cars are better built and more reliable electric’s and can be fettled to improve performance, nice one chaps 👍.
Great review captain mustard love your energy and enthusiasm
What was going on in the heads on late 90s car manufacturers? They saw the rise of the GTI cars in the 80s, boring hatchbacks covered in black rubbery bits, red stripes and extra lights and stuff and the people liked them. I liked them, I have had three Golf GTIs and an XR3i. I’d like to have some of the others, a 205 GTI, a Renault 5 GT Turbo, even gawky stuff like a Visa GTI or a Charade GTI. So come the 90s it’s time for a new generation of GTI. But for some reason they decided we didn’t want the rubbery black bits and the red stripes and the lights, we wanted a GTI that looked like the base model with big wheels. But I don’t think we did, did we? Hence the rarity of this thing and the derision heaped upon the Mk4 Golf GTI. There was the MG which looked like a GTI should do so what to do for Rover? Should have called it something else, maybe GSI like they used to, because it’s not really a GTI is it? It’s nice though, I like it.
That’s very sorted, and again very well presented car 👍🏻, well done Mr Allegro Man 👍🏻, price I think is just right for someone to dip their toes into the classic world and enjoy😊
Looks cool! What an excellent quality image 👌
What a great example of a Unicorn Rover. Allegro man has made a brilliant job bringing to a high standard. What an opportunity then for the Mustard Allegroman magic video. Brilliant thankyou
What a lovely car!
stunning British car
Food for allegrodog!
Genuine nice bloke, my fave sidekick of yours...ever myself!
Allegro man the truffle hunter of rover's
Defo Worth The Price, It looks Gorgeous. Good Luck with the Sale Allegroman
Lovely car paul and another good video 👍👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏
Good luck with the sale Allegroman, cracking example and worth every penny 👍🙂
I love the slight, sleeper nature of it where it doesn't look that different from a standard 1.4 but could probably blow a lot of things out of the water. Given the rarity and the work done, the price seems fair and should appeal to those who know its real value
Oh, don't tempt me!
#active alloys. 😉
Like it ❤
Great car with a great engine which you should've revved out a bit more as the VVC really enjoys being above 6000 rpm.
My old car :)
Are there many differences (other than looks) between the 25gti and the zr 160?
it`s been said before about other fast Rovers, - put a Ford badge on it & it would have folk queing up at double the asking price
It was actually 13 points you did !!!!!
