My RARE Hot Hatch FAILS the MOT, but will I get this Rover 25 GTi back on the road?

  • After more than two years parked in the barn my Rover 25 GTi started and drove itself out so, in the previous video featuring this super rare hot hatchback, I promised to put the car through an MOT test… to see if this fast Rover could go back on the road.
In this video I put the 25 GTi through an MOT test (UK’s road worthiness test) and it FAILS, but you’ll have to watch to find out what happens to this little pocket-rocket of a car. Will this be the end for my Rover 25 GTi or the beginning of its next chapter?
If you haven’t seen the previous video featuring the 25 GTi then I’d suggest clicking the link below to watch that video first, but do come back to this video afterward to see how this story ends.

I was fortunate enough to own a Rover 200 BRM (with the red grille) a few years back and wish I'd kept it; very special, as you say.

You must be down that MOT centre every week with the amount of cars you have 😂
How about some videos of you carrying out maintenance or repairs to your car?

Thanks for the comment; I am definitely on first name terms with my MOT testers! 🤣
As for doing maintenance myself, you'll see in my Capri videos and some of my others where I do a bit, but I am fairly busy with my job and family so do not get as hands on as I'd like.
Thanks for watching, glad you like the 25 GTi.

Such a cool car. I almost bought a gold 25 GTi 4 years ago as a daily driver to go with my Montego Turbo & ZS180, but ultimately decided to go for a more modern MG3 90th LE. Hope you enjoy driving it this month. These truly are special little cars that could fade into extinction if we aren't careful.

    • @cornishcarcollectors
      @cornishcarcollectors  Před 5 měsíci

Thanks for the comment Chris. I think the 25 GTi in gold is fantastic, it's best colour option and would have made a great trio of MG Rovers (all very different). I do agree the GTi is at risk of extinction, but there are a few out there in enthusiasts' ownership so fingers crossed we will not see numbers deplete to zero. Thanks for watching.

Only 1450 sold in the UK market and father to the MGZR160 which are climbing in value now, it’s a rare beast worth saving that’s why I have one they’re pretty well built compared to some of it’s tinny rivals of the day and much underrated that’s why they’re a good buy.

Thanks for the comment, it is good to hear from fellow 25 GTi owners. I do agree they are well built little hot hatches and very underrated. Having owned a ZR160 and still own a 200Vi, I enjoy driving the 25 GTi the most. Thanks for watching.

Hi Andy hope you are well and so pleased to hear the 25 GTI has got its MOT after standing that long it was great to see it back on the road with not much work needed
I have always been a fan of Rover British racing green and the part-leather seats and my dad had a very similar combination on a 45
Enjoy driving that lovely car but if you do decide to sell I know it would go to a good home
    All the best Daniel

Thanks for the comment. The temporary repair on the headlining will do for now... it actually looks pretty good (better than it does in the photo). I'll probably leave it for a new owner, if the car finds one over the next month or so. Otherwise, it is back in the barn with more work at some point in the future. Thanks for watching.

So it's not just Jaguars that have falling headliners. A week or so ago I bought a 2006 XJ8 VDP, it arrives Monday after getting a new headliner installed. I thought it was the glue that failed, I'm told it's the foam.

The mgzr seats are better because you sit in and lower in the front seats than you do in say 200vi and 25 gti seats.

Thanks for the comment. I do agree the MG 'Monaco' seats are lovely to sit in... proper sports seats. However, I am a big fan of OEM spec so my Vi has the original seats (and they look good) and the 25 GTi will go back to original 'Orbital' interior when with its new owner.

As for selling the 25 GTi, I will let it go to an enthusiast who'll enjoy, drive and improve the car... I think £1,200 is fair as it leaves the new owner some room to continue the car's restoration.

Calling it a hot hatch is a bit of a stretch mate. It only had 142bhp, 0-60 in over 8 seconds. That was not hot, even in 1999.
    The 1999 Audi S3 was a hot hatch, 222bhp 0-60 in 6.4 secs.
The EK9 Civic type R was a hot hatch, 184bhp.
The Sunny GTi-R was a hot hatch with 227 bhp, 0-60 in 5 seconds.
The Escort RS Cosworth was a hot hatch.
    Etc etc etc
This was a lightweight, not that powerful, cheaply made, warm hatch.

    • @cornishcarcollectors
      @cornishcarcollectors  Před 5 měsíci +3

Thanks for the comment and of course it's a hot hatch, just as the Fiesta Mk5 ST is with it's 150bhp (made until 2008). A hot hatch is a big engine in a small hatch back, with cars such as the Audi S3 edging into this new generation of "hyper hatches" which are cool, but not nearly as much fun as the 205 GTi, Golf GTi, XR3i, XR2, MG Z-cars, Vauxhall's SRi and GTE / GSi cars. I do agree the Rover is fairly tame in comparison to some that were around at the time, but don't take its "hot hatch" credentials! 🤣
Thanks for watching and for sharing your view, I hope you enjoyed the video. 👍

      @@cornishcarcollectors Thanks for the reply.
I appreciate we all have a different opinion.
I see these as 'warm' hatches, and a 1999 S3 as a 'hot' hatch, the RS3, A45S, M140i, Focus RS, are 'hyper' hatches.
I worked for Rimmer Bros for a while, and sold parts for MG, Triumph, Rover, etc so I do know a fair bit about these cars, and to be fair, they were reasonable motors, better than some of the MG Rover shyte for sure.
Definitely not 'hot' though, they were not fast enough, didn't handle well enough, and did not have the 'special' factor to be a hot hatch.
I did enjoy the video, so thank you.
The 205GTi Pug is a different level, it was a MUCH better handling car, and faster, yet the 1.6GTi came out in 1984, with the 1.9GTi coming out in 1986, so over 15 years before the Rover. So for it's era, it was a 'hot' hatch for sure.
By the time the Rover came out in 1999 the game had moved on a long way, and it was not fast enough, didn't handle well enough, and was not special enough, to be considered a 'hot' hatch. It could be described as a 'warm' hatch, being a level below though. Maybe the 1999 Rover 200 BRM might just slip into the 'hot' catagory, but only because it was a special edition in limited numbers (only 795 for the UK), had a twin cam engine, and a torsen LSD, unique interior, etc. It still wasn't very fast, but I guess it was slightly 'special' especially for a Rover.
