They fired similar stabs at others they saw as “entertainers” as opposed to “artists” such as Cliff Richard during an interview in 1988. Random fact, this was filmed in U2’s local pub called The Dockers. Paddy the barman was a legend and it was just next to their studio and management were they’re still based to this day.
That's the old Dockers Bar on Sir John Rogerson Quay just around the corner from Windmill Lane studios. The band used to drink in there all the time , as did I after work back in the day. I miss this U2. Poking fun, having a laugh. It was all sarcasm, irony and outright self-mockery. U2 fans know this, the entire 90's was deliberately insincere and arose from the fact that people in the 80's quite literally expected them to solve world hunger, and U2 decided that their image was too self-important, and it was time to cut it down. In fact, Bono stated at the time that "Achtung, Baby" was the sound of four men chopping down the Joshua Tree.

1) U2, despite their serious overtones, are very funny. Irish people are known for being especially harsh in their wit. I'm sure Collins laughed, even if everyone in the U.S. gasped. 2) That video was 1992. Not recent. 3) They are not tax evaders. They pay tons in tax - probably more than we'll ever even earn in our lifetimes. They just found a way to shelter some of their money, the same way Mitt Romney, Bill Gates, the Rolling Stones, and any other wealthy artist, politician or business person does. 4) U2 donate TONS to charity and often do charitable events at their own expense. They have donated proceeds for some of their biggest hits to charity as well. Of course, I'm sure this post will get a ton of thumbs down as it's more fun to mock U2/Bono than to actually learn the truth. But when someone does actual good (and Bono's DATA program is working in Africa), they are called wankers.
Phil Collins is actually an example of a fantastic musical talent and a man with a great sence of humour, driven to look like something else, because of jealousy and hate. Jealousy can destroy people. Think about it.

Absolutely, wonder why people don't get it here, you can even tell by the way Phil is smirking and asking his questions the entire conversation is led with the wink of an eye. U2 is my most favourite rock band, but Genesis/Phil Collins are one my most favorite musicians as well. Both are two of the greatest rock acts of all times.
Absolutely Irish to the core. If you hang out in Ireland you will see that this is typical pub humor, a little biting, a little real, but also all in good fun. It's great to see the lads just being real and unguarded. Phil Collins is an excellent musician with a brilliant career. They can take the piss out of him but it's just lads in a pub.
U2 are lightweights musically compared to the rich years of 70's Genesis and their prog classics. And personality-wise, the Genesis guys leave them in the dust. Looks like they needed lots of alcohol to stay afloat. I guess the Irish background still had them on the defensive too. Phil ends up with more respect in the end.

I had liked U2 for years..several of their albums were really refreshing and well done, but Phil is 100 times the musician that ALL of U2 are...and I don't even really care that much for Phil's solo career stuff...the early and mid-70's work he did with Genesis will always be regarded as some of the finest music of the 20th century in classes above U2's music....no contest

my memory from the original broadcast was adam saying"our parents have all your albums" im not sure if that was edited out or i had wrong then but i remember u2 being interviewed by phil collins as bono, edge, and adam were in a bar with a satalite feed-----please log on to equip.org
darn, I wanted to see the rest!
U2 lost my interest after about 2005, I met Bono around 2005, the whole experience made me think how pointless it is to lionize a person, I think stardom went to his head imo, sometimes it is better not to meet those you admire, everyone has different experiences but mine changed my perspective on famous "stars"
what happened?
Thanks for sharing, as I'm sure your therapist says on a twice weekly basis
@@declanfitzpatrick8268 There is real therapy needed for those who lionize and obsess over complete strangers like Rock Stars.. maybe you're one of them?
This does not sit comfortably with me being Irish who are generally friendly and welcoming on the whole, trying to tell myself that this was a just a joke that Phil Collins was in on but seriously it does not look good, U2 may be talented and their lives shows legendary but this looks in very bad taste and somewhat embarrassing.
You know why Irish jokes are so simple, so Englishmen like Phil Collins can understand them.
@@soniamacintyre5229 That's pitty because English don't even bother to understand them. Irish are that irrelevant for English people.
@@ltr1745 It's just jovial banter on my behalf. I love the English, otherwise I would have never married one. :)
@DarkeningSkies1 you bring up an interesting point, the satelitte hook was pre-planned so the award and the conversation had to be coriagraphed as well.the drunk display however may be real.who would sit in a bar in Dublin waiting for the "moment" w/o knockin' back some of that wonderful Guiness on draft?
Its all fun and banter between them and Phil. People are taking this way too seriously.....
Bono is gonna be pissed, when he finds out that he's not Jesus.
"How's she cuttin' Phil?" : ) Gold from Edge.
Love how the Edge and Bono are absolutely shitfaced and then Adam's just like "it's only half one". Sounds about right.
If only Mullen could drum like Phil. Check out Brand X and get back to me Mullen
+Maureen O'Connor - seems a bit unfair - he's not even there dissing phil.
Larry Mullin Jr, the class act of the band, left the pub early as things got out of hand
What pub were they in ?
I found it Dockers,,,
Your right the dockers pub .it's well gone now though .not too far from their studios in windmill lane .think it's an office block now
And Does he like the Movie the Crow?
People in comments are so slow its a skit
it's probably non-alcoholic beer.
Non alcoholic Beer in Ireland ? You can't be serious. They're the biggest drinkers on Earth 🙄
Bono is known to drink loads
@@hypersphereengineering6015 if u think they just happened to be at a pub to accept this award then I can't argue against that logic. i could drink all of them under the table but then again, I am the Nature Boy. Happy New Year.
@@naturboy They didn't just happen to be in a pub, that was for the cameras sure. But I'm sure they were drunk, why the fuck not. They were the biggest band in the World in 92. As for your drinking skills, I'm happy for you.
100%. Bono would never actually drink alcohol because it would make Jesus mad or something. Lmao
Paddy stole the bit: "I'm not that old.
yes! Lol!
Have a sense of humour people. Adam had a drink problem around that time. Edge was just trying to be funny and so was Bono. They had about 12 pints in them, whoever thought it would be a good idea is at fault anyway.
I know!
U2 were drinking and loaded up with Smack
Cheers for the info mate :)
"How's she cuttin' Phil?"
lol
Wow, they were sloshed.) I miss seeing unscripted footage like these on the teley.
Bono 2018 Irish Independent interview;
He recalls another broadcast, "something about Phil Collins" and all he can say about himself on that occasion is "Shut up! Shut up!"
Probably realized that people are too stupid to realize it was a staged joke and everyone (I.e. boomers) took it too damn seriously.
@@Enne_esse your mom listens to U2🤣
@@Enne_esse hey boomer you took yoga classes to become flexible enough to blow yourself because nobody else would do it 😂🤣😂🤣
@EaglesStir
do you mean like Dave Grohl ??
This is why Adam Clayton went teetotal not too long after.
