I wouldn’t categorize myself as a massive U2 fan. I never go out of my way to listen to them. But I enjoy their early stuff when it comes on. At least significant segments of it. But I maintain objectivity. They haven’t released anything special at all for 20+ years. But anyone who bags on their work from the 80s/90s is just a hater. Yes I know all the usual complaints about politics, Bono being obnoxious, pretentious, annoying, etc. and I get it to a certain extent. But there’s no denying before his voice was fried by the early 00s, he was every bit as vocally and charismatically talented as a front man as anyone in the history of rock not named Freddie Mercury.

I also saw U2 on the ZooTV tour, that was at Wembley Stadium in London, and I remember Lou Reid appeared - just a prerecorded film - singing, and Bono dueted with it. It was impressive. I also saw U2 on their previous tour, The Joshua Tree tour at the same venue - in 1987. Lou Reed was one of the support acts at the gig (the actual Lou Reed, in person). The crowd were so fed up by then, he was the 3rd support act, it was about 7.00pm and the crowd has been squashed in at this open air gig for 5 hours already, on one of the hottest days of the year. At best he was ignored, but some people were yelling ‘f**k off!!’ to him as loud as they could yell anything - this was during his ballad songs and he would have heard it. Had the crowd not have had to endure the heat and the crush he would have likely got a better reception. U2 came on at 8.15pm - the same time they always start their gigs - it was a good show but the crowd were really fed up by then. I always wonder why bands made crowds suffer so much at these open air shows.

I just wish Bono would pay Irish tax rather than hiding in European havens. That country gave that bunch of shit-kickers a lot. U2 have been on a downward spiral ever since Pop - with a few upturns but I didn't even buy the last 2 albums or get tickets for the tours. Last times I saw them were Nice 2009 and Herning in 2010 and it was just lame.
U2 and me were a hot thing from 82 to 88. We broke up with Rattle and Hum, got back together for Achtung and Zooropa, had an increasingly tedious marriage from Pop to No Line and the divorce came with the last 2 albums. I kept the old records. They kept the money.

Why is it impossible for people to understand how utterly brilliant U2 were? I'm with Noel on this and respect him for saying something that is deemed 'uncool'. Bono is a pretty nice guy but isn't that cool anymore and preaches a bit too much. U2 haven't really produced anywhere near their best since the early 90's but you can say that about most bands. U2 for more than a decade were very consistent and produced numerous good albums. Joshua Tree, The Unforgetable Fire and War are all superb. They then had the balls to change their sound at the peak of their popularity. Bono was also a bloody amazing singer/frontman in the 80's and isn't anything like how he is now as he is obviously much older. The Joshua Tree is so damn good it's almost too good. I feel sorry for people who don't get it. Coldplay have tried to nick from them so have Kings Of Lyon but U2 had far more credibility, weight and substance to their music. Listen to Bullet The Blue Sky and tell me it isn't immense. U2 have just become everyones punching bag of choice while they sit at home squeezing spots and buying into the latest turgid wafer thin indie group who are relevant for 5 minutes.

When I was a kid, I lived and breathed U2. Was mad for 'em, from 1981, when I was 11, right up to 1989, when I saw them three times on their Australian tour with BB King.
But it was during that tour that Bono, doing a post-gig interview with the rest of the band on MMM, introduced me to the Pixies. And while I remained a U2 fan until 1993 when they came out for the Zoo Tour, they became my second favourite band in almost the blink of an eye.
Since then, though, I've seen through the lie of U2. That lie, well beyond Memory Man echo units etc, can be heard in bootleg recordings of performances that would go on to be live album tracks. The best 'worst example' is the recording of All Along the Watchtower on R&H. Never mind the fact that the moment of that "Save the Yuppies" free gig, the spray painting on the Vaillancourt Fountain sculpture occurred during Pride but was cut into AATW.
If you listen to the original recording, the band, more specifically Edge, butcher that song. But they fixed it in post. And to my way of thinking, that's a movie expression. It runs counter to the idea of rock and roll.
And for a band who claimed to adhere to the three chords and the truth spirit of music, realising that the band I'd invested my entire adolescence in were essentially liars...that hurt.
After Achtung Baby, I was pretty much done with them, outside of the show in 1993. But I haven't bought an album or song since.
I don't begrudge or bemoan anyone liking them, if you do, great. It doesn't pick my pocket or break my leg, as they say. But it felt like a betrayal.

funny - its been the opposite for me. i loved the joshua tree and achtung baby when i was a kid (still do). i lost interest in their records after that. but ive seen them live twice in the past few years, and it really increased my respect for them. their catalogue is phenomenal. live, they are one of the most charismatic and epic things ive ever encountered. the feeling of being in the crowd while songs like where the streets have no name, ultraviolet, sometimes you cant make it on your own, new years day, stuck in a moment, one, etc etc etc are being played is a genuinely powerful experience. im sorry that somewhere along the road you became disillusioned with them. i think they make some of the most inspired sounds paired with poetry that humanity has ever invented. and as far as the post fixing thing, music is a business. one bad gig or performance cant ruin a multimillion $ operation. rock n roll is actually a carefully crafted illusion, just like film :) how they got there doesnt really matter - the important thing is that they leave behind recordings for history to enjoy. one bad performance does not a shitty musician make.

    • @47imagine
      @47imagine Před 6 lety +2

Strange. I saw them live recently and they continue to sound amazing, especially for a band whose members are pushing 60. I agree with LoLzZ85, post-performance corrections for live albums or movies are hardly exclusive to U2. Moreover, a lot of these creative decisions (such as moving the spray painting moment to AATW or patching up live tracks) are made by directors and producers, and not the band itself (this is just my educated guess). I would hardly liken this to a "betrayal" though. These guys pour their hearts out live. Go watch them.

U2 have had one good song in the last twenty years. They became an epic parody of themselves and the only reason Noel feels the need to defend them is because he supported them so often which propped up his own band.

When you discuss music or any art for that matter, you should use "IMO." For example, "U2 have had one good song in the last twenty years, IMO." If you don't use "IMO" you sound dumb. Don't sound dumb. Sound smart.

Yes, if I wasn't convinced about the subject I may well have done that. But I was clearly offering my personal critique because that's essentially all I have. And if I'd been writing it for Rolling Stone or another music based periodical I'd also have avoided using IMO.

Thats one good song more than 99% of the so called artists out there have managed to create in the last 20 years then. Name me one single artist or band that have been consistently great for 40 years plus? Its impossible. Everyone has their creative heights and then fall off. Yes, they could have called it a day after Beautiful Day and been remembered for only making great music but they love to do what they do. They still have some songs that their fans enjoy, they arent trying to be the most relevant band anymore, they are in their 50s for Christ sake. Just because their newer stuff isnt as excellent as their older stuff doesn't mean they weren't at one time one of the best bands on the planet.

U2 have had, like, consistently good songs over the past 40 years. I can’t fathom why so many people whine about them when lyrically they’ve gotten better, and the edge hasn’t even changed his guitar style in 20 years meaning that the band still has the same unique sound running through each song.

U2 is indeed one of the greatest rock band of all time, but sadly Bono lost it all, voice, soul, charisma. Back in the 80's in the war era, they were actually fighting for good causes and with a good spirit. Now what? Bono does pseudo charity, has became so egomaniac, is even part of the bohemian grove..
