    Roeper was a great film critic. It took him a few years to get comfortable on screen (Siskel and Ebert were the same) but when he did he was a worthy addition to the show.

    Well There is now a show out called "Ebert Presents at the Movies" with two new critics. Roger Ebert is producer of it, and gives his reviews via computer voice, since his voice has been taken from him. The two critics still give "thumbs up/down" reviews and that is what gives the show its golden virtue.

    No one has ever asserted that the critics were ever pressured to give positive reviews to any movies so I don't know where you are getting that from but it's not true.
    As for ad time for movies, that has nothing to do with quality of movies advertised. There's no such filter. Anyone can buy ad time. Half or so of the ad time was actually sold by the local stations, not the studio.

      @filmteknik3211 Před 7 měsíci

      Yes, Roeper & Phillips left “At the Movies” as the show was by then known in 2008. The show continued with the two Bens. Then Phillips returned with NY Times critic A.O. Scott for one season before Disney killed it entirely.
      Roger & Chaz Ebert produced a version which ran on PBS for a season.
      Roger died in spring 2013.

    I wish Richard Roeper and Michael Philips would continue the show. Those two are great together. At The Movies has always been great up until now. To be honest, I think Ben Mankiewicz would make an OK guest critic for like once every 10 shows. However, Ben Lyons is just terrible.

    @He wasn't fired. What happened was, Richard's contract was up and he wasn't able to come up to an agreement on a new one, plus Disney wanted to revamp the show and Richard didn't think that would work, so he left and so did Roger, taking the thumbs with him.

    I remember watching for this farewell-and saw that episode that last weekend there mid-August, but not seeing him give the farewell. It's nice that they finally let him show it a couple weeks later. I personally thought these two were a good team and that they should have kept it going. The new show, from what little I've seen-sucks.

    • @sha11235
      @sha11235 Před rokem

      He didn't give the farewell the first time it aired because they were going to show a repeat the next week. After this week, he would no longer be on the show so they put the farewell in here. And I do wish they had kept Richard and Michael. They did work well together and remember, they were both from the opposing papers Gene and Roger were a part of.

      ancestron Disney Wanted To Change The Show, and Richard Roeper didn’t like that. So he left... then Lyons & Mankiewicz took over for a year. And Phillips & Scott The next year.... and 5 months after that for a whole year: Lemire & Vishnivetsky.

    Well what do you expect? They're Disney! Aargh! And this show was so good the way it was before the 'Ben's' took over! Without Ebert or Roeper guiding the show, all you have now is a show that's more stale than Bean dip that's been sitting out for a few days.
