- Ebert and Roper review the upcoming sequel to Batman Begins "The Dark Knight".
Since I had posted Siskel and Ebert's review of Batman Mask of The Phantasm (The most under appreciated of all the Batman Movies) I thought it would be cool to post this review of the upcoming Dark Knight movie.
Richard Roper says that the film deserves a best movie oscar nomination - Zábava
I usually don't understand why people hate this movie. But when I do, I find out they like movies like Transformers Revenge of the Fallen.
Silas Moore That's hilarious.
To me, Jack Nicholson was being a bleached Jack Torrence from the Shining. Heath Ledger was like Hannibal meet Tyler Durden and the Zodiac.
hunterkiller1440 i don't see any hannibal lecter in heath's joker. completely different personalities, sensibilities, and views on human life. i do like your tyler durden comparison.
+John Thibideau you go to hell
+John Thibideau No he's right, your TRotF comment was repugnant and unsettling. Go to hell sir.
There's another half that hates both movies and loves Victor Fleming stuff.
Just saw Avengers Endgame....and TDK is still untouchable
Nic P endgame was pretty uninvolving and boring to me- definitely too long, started too slow, I only saw it a couple weeks ago and have already forgotten a lot of it- it’s a pity because Infinity Wars was a blast
TDK IS SHIT
@@latrolettteeeeeee you're shit :)))
@@tobyb1018 Endgame was an AMAZING but sometimes BORING movie. Like the Time Travel scenes.
I agree with you 100% no Superhero movie that they’ve made since this film has come close. How we didn’t win best picture is beyond me
"I don't always watch movies, but when I do, I prefer 'The Dark Knight'."
Saw you on the modern love music video
"...and should be considered for a nomination as "Best Picture"...
And yet the Aacademy preferred The Reader to TDK and Wall-E.
Gabriele Riva and no ome cares about that movie any more
Lol WAL-EEEE!
The reader was brilliant.
@stylus850 The Reader won Kate Winslet an oscar . Was a great story with brilliant performances . Has 7.8 imdb rating. Emotional storyline. Direction was top notch as was the cinematography. It was a film for adult audiences . You should stick to Marvel films I think. Or fast and the furious.
hard to beat a movie about the holocaust 😉
After all Endgames and Infinity Wars, etc.. The Dark Knight remains THE GREATEST SUPERHERO FILM EVER MADE.
Please. 🙄
well they're all such different movies, its hard to compare. dark knight is a somber crime drama with a realistic tone and infinity war and endgame are galactic epics that have 10+ years of build-up, the only thing they have in common is they are superhero movies
@regulator619 Avengers is more like a great buffet. Junk foods are in the realm of guilty pleasures like Venom.
Ackerion 100% true. One of the greatest films ever made, easily the best superhero movie of all time.
Ackerion after that is Logan and Spider-Man 2
Aw I wanted to hear eberts opinion on this, still a good review
he gave it four stars
I think sadly this was around the time he lost his voice.
@@SoftwareAgentsTV Correct; he lost his voice in 2006 (2 years before The Dark Knight).
I keep rewatching it at least once a year, it's still so bloody good.
The only time i have ever seen a film twice in the same day, it is a masterpiece and it certainly deserves Oscars, Ledger needs at least a nomination.
this film is so amazing it literally gave me chills .Health Ledger truely deserved the oscar he won for his role.
One of the greatest films ever made
Of course.
Sammy Hares Not that much bro but a good film indeed!
Exaggerate much?
One of the most overrated movies ever made
You mean Batman 1989?
This was my Millennial’s generation’s “Star Wars” Or “Jaws”. It’s a timeless classic. This will stand the test of time.
Usually comparisons are lazy, but yours really is apt.
If you think this was equivalent to Star Wars, then you don't understand how big Star Wars was.
Douglas Gonzalez this is possibly the Star Wars for comic book movies though. They wouldn’t be even close to as popular as they are now if this movie wasn’t made.
It came out when I was in 9th grade and it was the first time that I had ever been truly blown away at the movies. I saw it 3 nights in a row with my friends. Heath Ledger, the special effects, everything. It was utterly captivating.
Lol this movie is nothing compared to star wars, Jaws or any great movie before 2000.
"...Maybe one of the best superhero movies ever made." 100% AGREED!
6 years later, this film remains a near flawless masterpiece.
10 years*
Give it another 10 years and people will say it's the greatest film of all time - replacing the position held by films like The Godfather or Vertigo.
thejobloshow are you high?
No sorry it definitely has its flaws, starting from the very beginning!
I'm from the future (2020) and movies and film making decisions are made by social justice warriors, even at the expense of less profits.
11 years later and still a masterpiece and still not beaten
@@Voltar b v s was shit
this is still better than “The Batman (2022)”
Just saw it again.. can't believe it's been almost 10 years since it came out. A true masterpiece. We miss you Heath..💔
12 years now...
you know what is really going to burn?
In six years, we will be saying the words "Nobody who is in high school today was alive when The Dark Knight came out"
... though we can already say that about The Matrix and Lord of the Rings
@k1productions87 wow! Good way to put it
Unequivocally the best comic book movie ever, and I dare say it's also one of the best films of all time. It single handedly defines a genre, yet transcends it in ways that no other movie has done in recent memory. Its cultural significance is immeasurable.
As good as it was when I saw it on release day in 2008, it's even better reflecting on it now. An absolute masterpiece.
Watchmen to me is infinitely better to me however I can see how you would prefer Dark Knight
I think by cultural significance he meant the threat of terrorism in the film sprung by the Joker explodes into chaos in Gotham city, which culturally bears resemblance to extremist terrorism and mass shootings today
+degree7
Care to explain?
"Single-Handedly" defined a genre? I don't know about that. If that were the case, all super hero movies going forward also would have been grounded efforts. But that just can't work for all super heroes. Whether we want to admit it or not, the movie that defined the genre going forward was The Avengers. Not as good as TDK (imo), but every super hero movie after it tried its best to make a cinematic universe.
It's sad that whenever an incredible timeless movie is made, there are so many people that seem to hate it, as if they can't stand the fact that something new is exceptional. This is especially true for great movies of the last 8-9 years. The Dark Knight definitely isn't the best movie ever made, but it's definitely the best Batman movie ever made.
its a good film
+LoN3wOlF5tudi0s There's nothing special about the last 8-9 years. Dr. Strangelove got lots of hate when it was released. Loudmouth idiots have always, and will always, get their two cents in first. And their opinions will always be forgotten.
@regulator619 What's sickening is how they feel vindicated after DC Universe turned into such a shit show, as if Burton could have swooped in and saved it.
It's kind of like how SW prequel fanboys think that the sheer awfulness of TLJ can retroactively make the prequels good, as if we graded the SW movies on a curve.
The Dark Knight is a great film, and a cinematic achievement unlike anything before it.
No, I didn’t like it

The Dark Knight Rises was a GREAT conclusion to this Trilogy.
Not . . . really
you have NO IDEA how happy this makes me, seeing/hearing all these amazing reviews!! i haven't been this creeped out by The Joker since Jack Nicholson played him (but then again, up until now, The Joker has only been in the first Batman movie).....
Hope all is well, cowgirl! You were right about this movie!
One of the best movies ever made!
This movie defined my generation. What an amazing summer...
Shitty Generation.
I'm 17 years old, I remember when this came out I was in 2nd great and it was the stuff if your parents took you to see this.
Defined your generation??? Wtf!!! That’s kind of over dramatic, don’t ya think!!

@@CelestialWoodway That means shitty parents of that generation.
Man the Batpod scenes were amazing imo. Great action scenes in general. And I agree with the guy about the stunts. Having real stunts rather then pure sfx adds to the authenticity and realism. Loved the movie..
Richard's review on this was a knockout, phenomenal sequel, and Richard's "see it twice" comment was a little funny I might add. Fun times at opening weekend.
I'm so hyped for this movie. Thanks for uploading this, I missed it this past weekend.
did you like it?
wow this post is old!
Heath Ledger is beyond thrilling...and terrifying...simply a genius turn by one of the acting greats. I really miss him.

@@CraigMcfly1985 I'm addressing a movie that the OP mentioned.
Roeper is so freaking articulate. I love the way he reviews this movie.
@Rodzilla careful now, lest we might start giving people credit for being good. Like complimenting a chef for a great dish or praising a director for a well-made film. Crazy right?
thanks for the video, its a hell of alot better than the handcam footage. 3 days left folks! I'm brimming with anticipation!
Unfair what they said about Nicholas’s performance in ‘89 Batman, he was very menacing.
its awesome that nolan turn batman into a serious film.. he turn a comic book movie into a crime drama.. every character had a great role.. hands down one of the best films in terms of entertainment, storyline, character development, and action sequences that balance out... ledger will definitely win best supporting actor..
Watching this review and seeing how much they praise it gets me so pumped for The Dark Knight Rises.
Oh this was Ebert in name only, they had adopted the “see it” thing over the thumbs up thing.
I like when Roeper said an "upgrade from Katie Holmes" LOL
Funny line he made.
yeah and her career promptly died LUL
the dark knight=best batman movie ever
Batman forever was a great Batman movie
Heath Ledger is such a giant loss. He had such an amazing future ahead of him. So sad.
@killeraddiction
how do you get the closed caption option?
RIP Heath Ledger
Ian Montalvo he is certainly missed. I remember his role in Monster’s Ball
Mask of the Phantasm, most under appreciated? Most say its the best Batman film ever released in theaters
+FCB 2513 it is one of the best Batman films but MOTP is also by many to be the best Batman films
I think they mean to mainstream audiences, not just Batman fans 😂
@James Gleason Live action isn't always better. Bruce Timm's animation team is legendary. Just compare his Justice League to the DCEU's.
Look!
It's the best animated movie ever made about Batman.
But I would put the live-action TDKT above it in strenght.
@@Angyali Three against one?
Was looking forward to Ebert but these guys pretty much nailed it. TDK is a very difficult film to dislike.
@Nagraath Just curious....If a film like The Dark Knight is not an amazing piece of work then what is in your opinon? Just curious.
I had pretty high expectations going into the movie. I liked some parts of it and the Joker was pretty awesome. Overall I felt that the movie was a bit bloated and I found myself uninvested in some of the main characters. I can understand why some people really liked it but I feel like others are just riding along with the hype.
I've been waiting for a PG-13 Batman flick for years.
Actually, DarkKnight would have been rated R if it hadn't been a major blockbuster film.
That aisd,e this was mondo good.
What was the flashy moment he talked about at 3:46? Was it the magic trick?
@Myytmovies Yes,Bill Finger is almost never mentioned,it always just says "Batman created by Bob Kane". Even Kane himself wished he had given Bill a byline. Anyway,it's cool that you pointed that out
I can remember seeing this movie a few weeks after it came out, it was the BEST batman movie i have ever saw.
P.S. it was also my first theater-batman movie.
Dark knight trilogy>all ironman movies/avengers movies
What was the one flashy performance Michael Phillips was talking about?

One on my list of my Top-10 Best Movies of all time.
I am not sure if it is possible to make a plausible comic book film. How did you feel about the watchmen?
i LOVE you for saying that!
The best movie of the 2000s!
Nolan better than Burton. Bring on the haters
No need for a fight when it is the truth.
There's literally nobody that disagrees with that.
Nolan Batman was so ashamed of being a comic book movie that he didn't even have a visible costume symbol
David Curry it had
Joel Schumacher did a good job in Batman Forever but not the one without Val Kilmer
Phillips made a good point about the Joker, he's purposely NOT in the movie as much as we want, so that we end up wanting more.
@Spengler56 in the same interview he said he was given the books but did not read them very thoroughly. He did live in that hotel room though.
Ledger was amazing, the rest of movie not so much. Cut down down to two hours by a competent editor, and not only would it come close deserving the praise it is given, but also could've set up a much better third film than the horrendous one we got.
Not really everything about it was amazing if I had one problem with it I guess it would be Batman's voice but that is just a nitpick.
What would you have cut? The narrative is air-tight and extremely compressed as it is. And there was never meant to be a 3rd film. This was intended to be Nolan's last film. That's why they had to complete the story.
But yeah the voice was a problem.
Twoface should've been saved for the third film.
Stephen .Mcabee They were never planning to make a 3rd film. In fact without Harvey's fall, none of the arcs in the Dark Knight would've been completed. The central idea of the film is that in a world where there is no justice, there' no way to fight the system without falling into corruption, apathy or worse. They show this through the 2-face character and Batman's flirtation with fascism also hinges on the idea that he was forced to kill Dent, breaking the one rule that separated him from the Joker. Same can be said for Commissioner Gordon. All the ideas of the film hinge on Two-face. This is the perfect example when a film completes the story it set out to tell. Nowadays all the superhero movies are just made to set up other superhero films and we get an endless chain of reboots and sequels. The Dark Knight works as a standalone. But really the length isn't important. The movie is never slow. The pacing is bludgeoning and there's a lot going on at once.
***** For the TDK the ending was kinda bad but I don't see Harvey Dent as a main villain it just would not have worked and TDKR sucked and the reason why was because there was so many plot holes
why do you people need everyone to like this movie?
Great point; I don't know what it is about the Internet. Everyone wants you to conform with popular opinion. If you disagree with the crowd you are somehow wrong.
Why do you people hate on one of the greatest movies ever made?
@@CelestialWoodway Why do you need everyone to think the way you want them to think?
Yeah I agree, that was the first thing I thought to myself, right after I saw TDK. I was like damn, I would love to see what roles he would have done next, and that we won't ever see that talent again.
I agree. As much as I love the epicness of the Marvel First Ten Years complete with it's indelible finale, Endgame, I still think all those Marvel big deals are standing off to the side, looking at The Dark Knight with a single tear of envy in their proverbial eye.
This was when he had been in the hospital for cancer. And there there where guest critics filling in for him, but the show was still called Ebert and Roeper...Thus the title in video too.
I loved it when I saw it, then I thought it was overrated, then I came back to it again after I saw inception and appreciated its achievements. great film, very unique
@biggyshack If I remember, Ebert left the show 2 weeks before the review of The Dark Knight, that's why they didn't change the name. But don't worry, Ebert and Roeper are coming back again in 2011.
I will never forget the hype around this movie. I saw the midnight premier and left thinking that it wasn't hyped up enough. Just an amazing movie.
heath ledger's performance is indeed haunting. no one will ever top that in the near future. no one.
Critically one of the most underrated films of the decade...brilliant story, brilliant acting.
That went on for years as I recall.
Is the graphic novel more realistic?
Usually when I think of movies staying true to the comic book, I think of George Clooney.
At this time back in 08, Roger Ebert left the show to undergoes his treatment for thyroid cancer. He was diagnosed in 07 and had his surgery the next summer. So Roeper started having guest reviewers on the show. Michael Phillips was on the most
The dark knight is an amazing film, but after watching it a few times I have seen many flaws.
Batman can fall of a building with his love interest in his arms and survive by landing on a car.
The bank manager at the start can have a machine unloaded on him and he does not bleed.
We never see the Joker leave the Wayne building after he crashes the party.
I did love the film and all the cast, but these things and more make it seem a bit silly.
does this show still air? i heard its over
@Spengler56 funny enough, it's actually the other way around for the Joker adaptations. Jack read the books, and ledger didn't. He watched and analysed the film of Joker's origin: "The Man Who Laughs" and read up on historic anarchists and serial killers. The material relating to the books was conveyed completely through the script in which the Nolan brothers read the novels obsessively.
Also, right from the opening sequence, I was HOOKED!
Watching this with the Closed Caption option on is some of the funniest shit i've ever seen.
i still remember the 'china extraction' scene..the moment batman escaped from that building with that plane my mind was blown away!
I'm not a comic person at all, and yet I saw this movie in theatres and was absolutely spellbound.
The Dark Knight is the greatest superhero movie of all-time
@johnmoser01
How many movies have you seen??
Joker at 2:05 with closed captioning is HILARIOUS...
"I don't have to handle the soviet union... uh and... yeah"
@40Pacino Cool thanks for sharing your opinion with me. BTW I haven't seen true grit or the fighter yet(But I really want too).
Boy after hearing this review I wonder if it is a supermove movie? Did they mention that?
Every joker role from here on out will be compared to Ledgers Joker. Legendary performance. Also Bale is one of the best actors all time, his Bruce Wayne is perfect.
I was lucky enough to see an early screening of this film, let me just say....ITS FREAKIN AMAZING!!!! Usually when I get hyped about a movie, I leave disappointed, not the case here. If anything it exceeded all my expectations!!!
I saw Dark Knight in its opening weekend. The best superhero film I've seen, along with Iron Man, since Spiderman 2 and IMO tops Spiderman 2. Ledger deserves an Oscar for the Joker! BTW I miss the "thumbs up" rating in Ebert and Roeper, don't know why they replaced it with "see it".
Miss this show especially the runtime of the reviews. There are some great CZcams reviewers but many of them have CZcams videos that are as long or longer than the shows they’re reviewing 😆
I don't even want to tell you how many times I've seen this movie. It's ridiculous. It's obscene how many times I have watched this movie. And I'm still not tired of it. In fact, I may watch it again right now.
I want to know what his “slight quibble” about the run time was. What could have been cut? What is this film classic’s weakest moment?
IanPeon, I completely agree with you.
I wish we could hear Roger Ebert's opinion on this film and wish him the best in his ongoing battle with thyroid cancer. Anyway, I think the two reviewers got it all right in this glowing review of the film. I would have to struggle hard to find anything wrong with this wonderfully-crafted and superbly-acted (especially Heath Ledger's Oscar-winning turn as the Joker) masterpiece.
lol i have to wait another couple of days before it comes out in the uk, and just seeing all these great reviews just makes me more hyped for it. one question how much better is is than batman begins- which was fucking awesome
Detective work? You must have missed the beginning when he visits the bank after the robbery and they discuss the marked bills he's been providing to track the mob. Or a little later when they use a sonar program to plan the assault in Hong Kong. Perhaps you also missed a little later in the movie where he extracts a shattered bullet from the wall and using a computer model is able to trace the fingerprint.Or the end when he finds the Joker by wiretapping every phone in Gotham.
Ah brings back great memories, love this movie!
i never thought of alex from a clockwork orange, but now that he said that i can totally see it
@Abr022575 P.S. Apparently you forgot the ending to TDK. "Because HE'S NOT A HERO, he's a silent guardian, a watchful protector, a dark knight."
Ledger was almost the lead character in this movie moreso than Bale as Batman. Even when Ledger's Joker isn't on the screen, he still has a presence. An incredible performance by him. It was sad that he passed before it was released and that he wasn't able to return to the role in a third movie. The Dark Knight Rises could have used him to help the plot. This movie was going to launch him into some big roles in the future.
You would put that over this?
Mask of the Phantasm needs to be mentioned more alongside Batman Begins and the Dark Knight, for these are the films that truly captured the essence of Batman in one dimension or another.
