After a disappointing year last season, Real Madrid will be looking to bounce back in 2023/24. But having lost Karim Benzema, and with the new signing of Jude Bellingham, Carlo Ancelotti has a lot of big decisions to make. And so far, he’s being pretty bold…
Today we’re breaking down Ancelotti’s new midfield system, a 4-4-2 diamond, and whether it will take them back to the top of the world. .
If you enjoy the video please consider leaving a like, it would be greatly appreciated :)

Its nice to see the 4-4-2 diamond again, especially at Madrid. Only concern is that the last time they did it, they had peak Marcelo and Carvajal providing more creativity from wide, and Casemiro dropped deeper for defensive cover. Will be interesting to see how Ancelotti compensates for that
I wouldn't be suprised if he'd play camavinga at LB more? He's a top tier player, additonally we could expect a large signing as I cant remember us having a good RB (excuce my ball knowledge. unless we still have Carvajal?)
@@AlexFrush Camavinga is refusing to play LB for most of the season like last time and wants to play DM, also yes Madrid still have Carvajal but he isnt at his best and had a dip in form last year
@@logancoleman4507 ah interesitng, Carvajal is understandable, and so is camavinga tbh, in his position, being one of the biggest upcoming CDM talents, I'd also not want to be stuck at LB
@@AlexFrush Did you forget that Fran Garcia exists and he is the main LB now? Mendy has shown improvements but his inconsistency is due to injury and timing. RB width is a problem though.
@@Aaddy7 Yeah I did in fact not know that, I mentioned before, and apologize for my poor ball knowledge, average fifa player here haha
It’s kinda like the 4-3-1-2 that he used at Milan except that they don’t have proper strikers
The 4-3-1-2 with Gilardino and Shevchenko had them play more like a 2023 inside winger, they'd start wide and cut inside. However then, both were also strong and muscular strikers who could do a good job in the air, which Rodrygo and Vini aren't no matter how good they are. Against good teams they should try to concede possession and go for counters just like the Milan teams of old
Ancelotti is trying to bring back the playmaker style game, I just hope it works
@@sercangok523 zidane did wonders with diamond tho.. but they had marcelo and carvajal who was on prime back then
@@sanskarkoirala736yes wonders but diamond needs 2 strikers e.g Benzema and Ronaldo😊
No Kaka also hurts
Just as I uploaded this I read about Courtois’ injury 😬 Big big blow.
Can you do a video on Hermoso and his role in Atleti’s system? Him playing in that hybrid midfield role transformed Atletico’s season
more real madrid content. youre my favorite, and still the only youtuber whose videos are the first i watch as soon as they are released.
also, do you think real madrid could be better in terms of 4-2-3-1 formation?
i think that would allow most players to retain optimum naturality. and also rodrygo could hop between st and a rw roles
@@Kaijufiedwould love to see a video on that, hermosos quality in build up play is insane
I don't think anchelloti wants to play like that, but had to resort to it because of no striker.
Carlo is world class, give him any set of players and he'll come up with something
He's custom made for Madrid Galacticos model. If they had him in the 00s when he was Milan manager they could have done so much better
Nah I think ancelotti is great when he arrives but then after two seasons he kinda sucks. It happened last time he was at Madrid and it happened last season. Hes very stubborn with some players, he just benches them to hell for no good reason. Hes been great but also bad, and worst of all hes on Xavis pocket
@@MegaSilverBloodAncelotti can only work with super stars.
He is very bad at rotating players and using the whole team and not just the same 15 players. That's why he regularly loses the league (5 leagues in 25 years while training top teams is laughable).
He has 11 players and he puts them where he needs them to play his pre-planned team.
Then he switches in some players in the 80 minute mark, and has 10 players on the squad that hardly play.
This leads to things like Modric as a CF against Barcelona. Not to speak of not allowing young players from the B-team to play.
Less than 150 minutes in total for those players last year.
@@carlosperezdelema "ancelotti can only work with super stars" is just wrong. ancelotti was very very good for everton
@@carlosperezdelema he was doing wonder with a terrible Everton squad, which played almost relegation after he left..
I’d like to see more Real Madrid content! And I say that as a Barca fan. You’re commentary on both teams helps make sense of the struggle at the top of La Liga.
Plus, flame wars between Barca and Real fans in the comments will drive your videos up the algorithm. 😂
I agree as a madrid fan
well, madridista here, and i liked his videos on barcelona. his videos kind of showed me how good pedri is.

@@dB-zb2ft hahaha 😭
Yeah I hope he continues these types of contents with more teams like Newcastle, Brentford, Benfica, etc. And also the national teams with interesting philosophy of playing. I would also prefer him to cover the extremely unique and successful teams of past.
On the Vini problem: he needs to adapt as this is his opportunity to make it his team. In a team with so many ball carriers, he is now expendable. He needs to offer more now off the ball.
There's stories of Cristiano learning his movement from videos of Best, Law, Van Nistelrooy etc. CR7 had already had a 20-20 season like Vini and then he had his best season at United after that. Vini might not have the natural gifts that Ronaldo has but he has shown the ability to improve his effectiveness on the pitch. Great off ball movement will not only allow his teammates more time, as him being a threat will push the lines back, but it will make his game age well till at least 32 as you cannot outrun people forever. Teams consider him a threat now and he needs to bring new ways of carving out defenses as he will barely touch the ball 50 times a game and when he does it will be most be in area where he cannot do any harm. What he does not want is a repeat of that 2nd leg vs Man City.
the last time I've actually seen a team use a narrow formation without wingers was literally Anchelottis Milan in the early 2000's
Ten Hag's Ajax from 18/19 season
@@MazratiTadic and mazraoui brought width in the attack
Spalleti's strikerless 4-6-0 Roma in the same period, also seemed wingerless, because Mancini was not as effective as getting the ball to Totti's feet, having Perrotta, Aquilani, Montella storm through the middle in interplay.
Isn't this similar to Madrid's team in 17/18 with Isco behind Ronaldo and Benzema?
RM 2018? Isco in a free role behind cr7 and Benzema. KCM in midfield. Marcelo and Carvajal covering the whole flank on either side.
More Madrid content! As you said, they don't play in an extremely rigid system (which seems to be the more the norm now) but they're just as successful, which makes the contrast fascinating, imo
I don't know if it's a plus that they don't play positionally. I think it works because they have insane players.
@@nirki It's just inconsistent especially in the league, but better in tournament settings
Ancelotti has done all this before at Milan & Chelsea. He’ll use players in the best possible way. He’s not afraid to play asymmetric formations either. I’d expect to see a 4-3-1-2 with Vinicius out wide on the left (his best area) with one more central striker. Also not surprising to see Bellingham in this role: at Dortmund he was becoming ever more goal-focused & more of his game was about moving beyond the forwards.
Well, he is not using Vini the best possible way to be honest, he is a great player but this system doesn't benefit him at all, he seems to be kinda lost
Just found this channel and absolutely LOVE the content. Would enjoy seeing some content on defensive maestros (Mourinho & Benitez). Would also love to see a video on the battles between Klopp's Liverpool & Guardiola's Man City over the last few years. Keep up the good work!
I love how Ancellotti see the game. Yeah, it need good players, but that's something he has.

Great analysis. We would definitely like more Real Madrid content.
Yes, I want more Real Madrid content! It's gonna be so interesting since it's Vini's transition into a goalscoring forward like Cristiano. Bellingham drifting into dangerous areas. Fran being a dominant presence on the left flank. I'm not worried about the GK issue, no one knows what's gonna happen at this point. But tactically, it's gonna be a holy grail to analyze them. Excited!
you ´should definetly be worried about Courtois' injury. Considering the last I'd say 3-4 seasons Madrid's defense has been good at best, they are actually pretty shaky and you can see it on the league drawing and losing to pretty modest teams like girona or rayo vallecano, not to mention all the times he has literally saved them on UCL
@@chromex21 oh ya losing cortoa so paintfull until next year :(

We should be worried about Courtois injury lmao. Vini can never be a CR7 type player, that is just not him. Let him do what he does best but improve his goal scoring for sure.
Excellent vid. On a personal note, I'm so happy to see a big club like Real emphasis on relationism rather than JDP.
Hello @PuristFootball, have been waiting for your tactical analysis for Barcelona's matches for the preseason

Could we get a video on Edin Terzics tactics. It took a while to gell but once it did, dortmund looked the best they have in years. Love your content anyways
The biggest answer to your concerns is to have faith in development of the youth.
1. Vini growing into his role as forward. Last year we all wanted him more central and this season we’ve got it big time. Through film study he hasn’t been starting that much more centrally but more so he’s been getting ball wide but higher up the pitch. Game by game he seems more comfortable and once he gets that first goal and first big goal his confidence will grow. He needs to keep at it and study his film.
2. We have a weak low block numerically but with our possession based attack and the most lethal counter attack in the world that weakness is already dampened. But you talk about lack of athleticism and aggressiveness from Kroos and even Modric in a low block. Well Camavinga, Fede, and Tchoumeni all have the athleticism and aggressiveness to fix that. They just need to continue to improve their IQ, instincts, and defensive technique like tackling, blocking, and marking.
Game 1 if the season we didn’t start the old boys

Please do some videos on Manchester United. United got a great manager and just signed Onana and Hojlund, so I think a lot of things will happen in Manchester.
Great content as always, man!!
Madrid feel like the last elite bastion for fluid football that is exciting and fun to watch. The other top teams have become so robotic in their build up play nowadays.
Let players play, especially when they have elite skills.
I'm so glad this video got recommended to me. Quick question, I'm relatively new to this whole tactics thing. What are some books you'd recommend about football tactics?
Try football Meta CZcams channel
Carlo essentially looks at the squad he has and comes up with a system to get the best out of them, rather than shape them how he sees.
Minimal friction between players and play style. Very clever reactive coaching.
I would like to make a request for future videos. When discussing player stats could you add a sort of legend somewhere on the screen? An example from this video is when discussing Benzema's stats, specifically 'xG'. I think it'd be helpful for those not familiar with the acronyms (such as myself). Thank you! Really enjoy your videos.
I think that'd take a lot of time and effort. Probably too much for the little return it gives since most people watching these types of vids are familiar with these types of terms.
In the meantime: you might have looked it up already but, xg means expected goals. Which means what it says, how many goals a player was expected to make. This is calculated for every shot depending on the position of the player and ball at the time of shooting as well as the angle and so on. The xg for every single shot a player takes is then added up and you get their total xg for let's say a season. It's far from a perfect stat since it fails to take into account the amount of defenders between the ball and the goal, their position, the position of the keeper at the time of shooting (a gk could literally be nowhere near his goal, and the attacker could have an open shot from 40 mtrs and it'd still be a 5% xg or something while he basically just has to make a 40m pass into the net), whether a striker is shooting with his favored or his weaker foot and so on. But over long periods of time it can be a good indication to get an idea of if a striker is over- or underperforming in their attempts and if a striker is getting into dangerous area's often enough or not. Over short periods of time like 1 game it is absolutely useless.
yes more Real Madrid content thank you very please
I think we have to look at the history of the position/number in Madrid. I don't think Pérez wants trophies this season, but he wants to build a team. Once Bellingham connects with the rest of his teammates, he will play a similar role that Zidane played, but for now I think he's playing a role similar to Iniesta did at barca. I think next season, mbappe will join and the rest of the team will know how to play together, with Bellingham being the key difference and mbappe being the goalscorer. Similar to haaland's role at city but unlike haaland mbappe is good at building up play and using his presence to create problems for the opposition. I'm not saying Madrid won't win anything, but the focal point is them struggling and fighting for wins, with mbappe being like an oasis in the desert next season.
Far fetched but entirely my opinion.
Yes i want more Real Madrid content!
More Real Madrid content!! Im in!
This is something similar to what Mourinho did with Madrid, but Carlo doesn't have a striker, he plays with 2 Centar Forwards/wingers, while Jose had Ronaldo and Benzema in his disposal, 2 great strikers
Jose used Pepe as a CDM which was great, more protection when defending and Pepe could always run in the middle of the pitch with the ball without any fear of a counter attack
I was pretty worried having seen their preseason performance but they were actually good against Bilbao so I think time will tell if they can be consistent.

Thanks man for making these highly intriguing contents on lesser known/discussed topics/tactics. I really love to watch these unconventional style of plays especially with the current domination of positional/pattern play.
This transitional phase of galacticos is going to cost us this season but for sure next season the team will be immaculate
A season is a great sacrifice for decade long dominance. Let’s pray it works.
It's wild that "sacrificing" a season will pretty much certainly yield one major trophy regardless.
Either La Liga or Copa will work out for us.
That's a very strange and arrogant statment @@kingmonde . You do understand, I believe the Spanish call them cycles in football? There's no guarentee either than a new cycle will bring the same success. Football doesn't work that way. Of course Real Madrid are a great club, but had to wait 32 years to win there 7th CL title.
@@dtrjones yes, but Papa Perez knows what he's doing. If you think this latest era of Madrid wasn't planned, you're fooling yourself. Perez compiled a young squad that went on to dominate the Champions League for almost a decade. How many semi finals did that group get to? This team he's building is just a new version of that. When Mbappe joins, this new team could even eclipse the last team, and win 6 or 7 Champions Leagues in the next 10 years.
For this to work, Vini and Rodrygo have a massive job on their hands to compensate for Benzema's departure. They need to be a lot more clinical upfront, not take too many touches inside or close to the box, and be top finishers.
MORE REAL MADRID CONTENT THANK YOU
0:35 that time living in Germany really had an impact on Bellingham
yeah I need more Real Madrid content
If they signed Mbappe, it'd be perfect for them, 4-4-2 diamond with Mbappe RF & Vini Jr LF. Thats a scary attack
Exactly what I was thinking!
It’s possible, though I feel like Mbappe is also more comfortable using the left touchline as a reference point. The dynamic between him and Vini would need some compromise.
@@thepurist_ no doubt, but mbappe is a world class winger he can cope on the right, note the position is more forward than winger, also it's not like mbappe and Vinni can't switch positions at times during games.
With giving more freedom to this team to attack, I guess we will see this young Madrid side go in next next gear, they'll concede but could outscore, this is ripe condition for any potential attacker to become a consistent goal scorer.
Its so nice to discover a youtube channel that isn't about the EPL..
I'm a Madridista and La Liga fanatic since 2005... this team is the love of my life, through better or worse, anyways this video alone is everything I've said to my friends last year about being too passive and whenever in the past we tried a 4-4-2.. but this 4-4-2 diamond is refreshing but it still makes me uncomfortable and I think we will suffer in the big games.. Ancelotti is stubborn and won't listen until we get thrashed.. Its why I think it might be better to just go to a 4-3-3 with Rodrygo/Joselu as 9 and Valverde/Brahim/Guler RW.. Bellingham can still be a 10
If they will keep with the 4-4-2 diamond then Vini would really need to step up, Rodrygo too.. I don't know if there is enough scoring in the team.. and we won't be replacing Benzema
Beautiful video.. I'd love more content about Real! Even La Liga and Barca, I need them to be at their best.. without a good Barca side the league isn't as fun and I want all teams to be at their best for Europe too. Happy to subscribe!
Uptop bro
I guess the reason why Carlo is risking and leaving more players so high when defending is that he currently does not have a player that scores 30+ goles, so he's trying to squeeze out as much scoring from his roster. Jude can be a masterful 8, but why waste his skill and stamina on deep play when he has modric, kroos and tchoumeni. I agree with him, only issue is Vini doesn't seem to shine as much when playing centrally and as for now Carlo wants him to adjust. I hope adjustment goes well since putting him near the touchline will almost negate Fran Garcia's incredible speen and workrate for providing width. Then again, Vini doing his usual fire on the wing proved to work and is just beautiful.
More content please 🤲🏾
I think this freedom will be good as every other team is shifting to a more positional play, but this formation doesn't get the best out of many players like Bellingham who like to control the ball and he should be making the pass to an overlapping player not make the overlapping run himself. Also Vini likes to stay wide and this formation doesn't allow him to. And out of all, we have seen their defense last year and a 2 defender formation with their defense will make them concede a lot of goals.
But this could all change if they sign Mbappe
They could try Ten Haag’s one winger tactic, when the ball is on that side of the pitch a player goes to the touch line, and vice Versa.
@@ryanfinnerty6239 yeah, but that work well when the central attacking mid is a natural or a false 9
442 diamond caters to Jude
Not sure if you already are (as you've now covered Barca, Sociedad and now Madrid), but I think there's so many goldmines in Spain for you with regards to content, especially with that kind of content lacking... clubs like Girona, Villereal and maybe even Atleti could be fun

@@notorious_biggie it’s called “The Barcelona Podcast” he’s on it every few months it’s hosted by a really chill guy named Dan. He was on an episode from Tuesday
I think this is even better with Mbappe. Mbappe even said that he doesn't want to play as a pivot who is stretching the defense like in PSG. Neymar and Messi needed space between the defensive line and the midfield to make their PSG system work with 3 non defenders which was compensated by defensive minded midfielders. He really likes to play with another forward like in the france national team where he has the freedom on offense. So having two fluid roaming forwards like Mbappe and Vinicius is perfect.
I don’t see Rodrygo with those two. I believe he will have to be sacrificed!
It works really well in Milan this diamond tactics, let's hope it works well in Madrid in this transition era, when Mbappe comes next year they will be firing all the cylinder!
Yeah we want to see more, real madrid content
More Madrid content please
More Real Madrid please❤
their forwards being so young now makes me think that they should have more defensive responsibilities
He should bring camavinga and tchomeni to be a double pivot with Bellingham in the centre and Kroos and Modric in front.this way Kroos and Modric can drift wider and make dangerous runs to create more chances. Bellingham camavinga and tchuomeni will help as they can play good long balls and are pretty good at defending. We also know that many of Madrid’s players can play many positions, this allow them to be more flexible if there is an injury or whatever. Maybe a full back can also shift up to Modric position making a back three and allowing Modric to be a traditional 10. Honestly if mbappe joins, his ego will ruin everything.
With some time to gel, I think this 4-3-1-2 is unstoppable
The only problem is Our attackers need to be more attack minded and we need a quicker right back to complement the style for certain games
finally a big team that plays the 442 diamond
Actually, I think the system would work perfectly in possession even with Mbappé.. Either Vinicius Jr or Rodrygo would drop out of the lineup up front, but that'd also give them more depth at forward.
Only concern for me is Kroos at the single CDM, who is essentially then more of a Regista than a classic 6, which I could imagine might cause some issues defensively versus top level CL competition.
Can we add another player at the pitch that way we could see new formations

can you analyze barca first game when time comes... LaLiga debut. feel like Xavi has a new system, especially once the transfers close down.
Real Madrid vs Manchester City is the most anticipated match in the upcoming UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.
Real has an advantage as they will have a 9-day rest till they play the first match at the Bernabeu in Madrid on April 9.
Man City have 2 matches this week, while Real rests, one on April 3 and another on April 6. So MC will only have 3 days rest when they play Real in the first match.
So if Real wants to eliminate their rival they better have a good result in their first match at home on April 9 so when they play the deciding match on April 17 at Etihad Stadium in Manchester they can play for a draw and advance to the semi-finals to meet the winner of Arsenal - Bayern Munich clash.
Carlo Ancelotti will not have any excuses this time as his team is mostly healthy and will be very well rested to be able to handle MC.
My prediction is the winner of this series will win the Championship on June 1 at Wembley Stadium in London.
What do you think?
This new formation so far it seems to be working but I'll prefer the traditional 4-3-3
