  • In this video I take my neighbor and his son - Jackson out to the range to help him decide what his first deer rifle will be. We took everything - .308, 243, 7mm 08, 30-30, 22 and 6.5 Creedmoor and the .270 Winchester to see which caliber Jackson enjoyed the most! Go down in the comments and let us know which caliber you think he decided on! What do you think the best rifle for a youth hunter is?

    In 1983 my oldest son was ready to start deer hunting so I needed to buy him a rifle. The local gun shop had 3 Ruger Model 77 RSI carbines (18-1/2" barrel, Mannlicher stocked). 2 were in .243 and one was in .250 Savage. They had a good price for them and since my 2nd oldest son would be hunting age in a couple years...and guns don't get any cheaper, AND I love the .250 Savage cartridge, I bought all three! I bought 3 Leupold M8 Compact 2.5x scopes to go on them.
    The two rifles in .243 went to my sons who have used them over the years to kill many, many deer. And now my oldest grandson is using one of them. I kept the .250 Savage and also killed many deer with it.
    A few years later...along came another son (it happens🤷‍♂) and when he was old enough, I handed him the .250 Savage rifle. I still handload for it, so he has no problem getting ammunition.
    IMO the .250 Savage is the BEST, "beginner" cartridge, but ammo is getting hard to find and I am not aware of anyone still making rifles for it. Even in the mid-80s ammo was none too common, but I handloaded so it wasn't an issue.
    In today's market, I'd still go with the .243 WCF for a beginner. It's even better now with the improved bullet and propellent technology we have.
    Good luck to your son!

      I have the same rifle is 6.5 PRC and it’s an incredible rifle. I own plenty of 4 digit, high end rifles, and that Cascade shoots right there with them. I decided to purchase it back when all you could find was 6.5 Creedmoor, or PRC, on the shelves. I’m so glad I did, I love that rifle.

    When I was growing up and starting it was either a 12 or 20 gauge. I giggle when people talk about recoil with a .308.

    • @cr42hunting99
      @cr42hunting99  Před 27 dny +1

      Yeah probably not having him try to hunt with a shotty out the gate but I did too. However I was older than 10. He handled the .308 just fine - once he knew what the .270 did I think he braced a little more moving forward.

    Man when I started hunting with my dad is was with 1 gun his Remington 7400 in 30-06 with some 220 grain core-lokt when I was 11 that gun would put me on my ass every time 😂😂
    But after I killed my first deer with it he got me a 270 which has become my all time favorite caliber and still hunt with it occasionally but now I mainly hunt with a 300 win nowadays and I bought him his dream rifle a few years back and he killed his biggest buck with it this year it’s the best being in the woods with a great father

    .270 feels like it has less recoil than a .308 when you have a bit of weight on you, when you are small like Jackson, it seems to push you further again.

    Great to see young men out learning how to do things right! I do the same when I see a kid on a salmon river. 😊 If I hook one I'll give them the rod and coach them until I get it in the net for them. Then i tell them that it's their fish because they did all the work. ;) Those smiles are the best on the planet! I'm not trying to brag, I'm trying to say that it's important to get our youth into the outdoors!!!!!! Especially in these times! Great video brother 👍

      @@cr42hunting99 I'm careful of telling of such things so gain glory of men, but it's important to be an example too! To tell another to be that guy to give up your rod so a kid can find a life long pursuit of hooking up with some big fish! As I said I don't usually tell of these things, but I think that others should be willing to do the same for these kids!

    Jackson was definitely getting his thigh workout in. I wonder why dad didn't let him sit on a bucket?
    That single shot 243 was probably the lightest of the test rifles, otherwise its recoil should be about same as 6.5 CM.
    Looks like he still had fun.
