We hung gallon water jugs on 3 foot pieces of rebar ranging from 100 yards to 500 yards in a field. We sighted the rifle in with Hornady 80gr ELD-X rounds then took one shot a time at each target. A milk jug is roughly the size of the kill zone (vital zone) for a deer or other ...

Money making scam for the complex.
Great choice in cartridge and the CVA Cascade is an awesome rifle. He can remove the space in the buttstock and it should fit him well.
Absolutely!
I cant imagine the 22 creed isnt an even worse barrel burner than the 243 is. I personally prefer the ARC versions. 6ARC and 22ARC look awesome!
They are both high BC bulllets
Yup
There's a shotgun slug called the SlapShot, which can launch a 105gr slug made out of delrin at over 3,000 ft/s out of a 24 inch barrel!
I wil have to check that out! thx
In Washington State you can't legally hunt deer with anything smaller than 243. Just one of the considerations.
def a consideration
The deal with 6.5 creedmore is the obsession with 1000 yard shooting that is arising. I think it’s better than 270 then, but otherwise no
good point.

In 1983 my oldest son was ready to start deer hunting so I needed to buy him a rifle. The local gun shop had 3 Ruger Model 77 RSI carbines (18-1/2" barrel, Mannlicher stocked). 2 were in .243 and one was in .250 Savage. They had a good price for them and since my 2nd oldest son would be hunting age in a couple years...and guns don't get any cheaper, AND I love the .250 Savage cartridge, I bought all three! I bought 3 Leupold M8 Compact 2.5x scopes to go on them. The two rifles in .243 went to my sons who have used them over the years to kill many, many deer. And now my oldest grandson is using one of them. I kept the .250 Savage and also killed many deer with it. A few years later...along came another son (it happens🤷♂) and when he was old enough, I handed him the .250 Savage rifle. I still handload for it, so he has no problem getting ammunition. IMO the .250 Savage is the BEST, "beginner" cartridge, but ammo is getting hard to find and I am not aware of anyone still making rifles for it. Even in the mid-80s ammo was none too common, but I handloaded so it wasn't an issue. In today's market, I'd still go with the .243 WCF for a beginner. It's even better now with the improved bullet and propellent technology we have. Good luck to your son!
Wow! Awesome story - thanks for sharing!
1/2 moa w Remington 700, Redfield 4-12, 6mm handloads
Nice!
@@cr42hunting99 was 18. carried that lil 1/2" 5 shot group paper around in my wallet for a while. Almost 50 years ago.
6.5 creedmoor I think is a good round but over rated. Especially compaied to other rounds.
Great video!
Thanks champ! We had a good time!
Use 2 rounds that are very similar in sectional density AND bullet construction when comparing penatration. At least the construction is the same.
6mm creed
The 300 Weatherby will launch 180gr bullets at 3,300 ft/s
Yes sir!
Next, do 6.8 Western vs 270 WSM
The 30-06 is kinda handicapped with light bullets, heavy bullets is where it really shines, such as a 180gr. A full power 180gr handload in the 30-06 can achieve 2,900 ft/s with a 26 inch barrel, and will totally out-perform a 150gr 30-06 load.
243 is my favorite out of the 6
Awesome caliber!
When I was growing up and starting it was either a 12 or 20 gauge. I giggle when people talk about recoil with a .308.
Yeah probably not having him try to hunt with a shotty out the gate but I did too. However I was older than 10. He handled the .308 just fine - once he knew what the .270 did I think he braced a little more moving forward.
I’m in the same spot with 7 year old. Such a tough choice
Yup. There are a few you can’t go wrong with though for sure
Crushes? Apples to oranges..
.270 feels like it has less recoil than a .308 when you have a bit of weight on you, when you are small like Jackson, it seems to push you further again.
Agreed!
Jackson was definitely getting his thigh workout in. I wonder why dad didn't let him sit on a bucket? That single shot 243 was probably the lightest of the test rifles, otherwise its recoil should be about same as 6.5 CM. Looks like he still had fun.
We tried the bucket - his torso was too short. And yes the 243 was the lightest for sure… his dad told me the next day he said it was one of the best days of his life. So yes - he had fun! Thx for dropping in
350 legend is a great choice for bout any shooter, offer in ar or bolt action platforms, with threaded barrels they are super quiet and easy on shoulder.
Ive heard good things about the 350 legend!
Love this interview. I appreciate getting an insight into the mind of our next President...God willing.
I believe it.
I’m with Jackson, 308 has some punch!
He handled it well!
