  • People often ask if they should take iron to overcome an iron deficiency when their hemoglobin is already normal or even too high? First, it is important to recognize that high hemoglobin is completely independent of iron status.
Low hemoglobin can be due to lack of iron, but you can have a high hemoglobin level and still be iron deficient. This situation is why many people suffering with iron deficiency get overlooked for years and even decades.
I would note that if you do have a high hemoglobin you want to get to work on figuring out why because high hemoglobin is generally associated with poor health outcomes.
When hemoglobin is elevated, the viscosity of the blood goes up. So you have thicker blood that increases the risk of blood clots and decreases blood to tissues like the brain, heart, and intestines. Which then leads to the breakdown in function of those organs systems.
In today's video, I'm sharing some of the reasons why hemoglobin can become elevated and what to do about it.

I got a cheap little cassette home test from Amazon that basically measured whether ferritin was under 30 or not. I found mine was, that was the first inkling I had that there was a problem. I had been trying to solve my hypothyroidism without medication using the carnivore diet. I was eating beef and frequently liver for over a year and my ferritin was still low, and when my haemoglobin was tested, it was 8.8, a minimum being about 12.2 (I'm in the UK). What I hadn't realised is that I was masking my anaemia with coffee. Sometimes 10 mugs of strong Turkish-style gloop every day, and I didn't know that the compounds in coffee could bind with the iron I was eating in my food and basically steal it. So, the coffee coupled with poor absorption meant I was getting no real iron in my diet even while being on a heme-rich diet.
I quit the coffee two weeks ago and omg. I couldn't get out of bed. I had no idea that severe anaemia felt this bad. I've been taking liposomol ferrous sulphate (84mg a day) for a couple of weeks now and it's not doing much for my already cranky digestion, but my hemoglobin is over 10 now, so I'm hoping that things are moving in the right direction, but I just wanted to warn other folks about coffee. It's so seductive when you're anemic because it's instant energy, but it's only masking the problem and making it so much worse. I just wish I'd known this a year ago. All that wasted steak!

Excellent video. I am on TRT and my hemoglobin averages around 16-16.5 which is on the high end of normal. I have low ferritin of 13 and been that way going back at least 10 years. Docs always said to not worry about it since my hemoglobin was normal. I started taking blood vitality and definitely feeling better. Been about a month so I plan to test in a couple of weeks just to see if it is going up. I also found out I was loaded with AGEs (Advanced Glycation End Products), so I started supplementing with Benfotiamine, Carnosine, Luteolin, and and Acetyl L Carnitine and in just 3 days I am really feeling a huge difference, so in my case I had more than just the iron issue. So many docs have no clue how important ferritin is OR they just ignore it and look at hemoglobin and/or TIBC without checking ferritin. However, in my case they did check ferritin so I should not have had to suffer the last decade with this iron deficiency. People need to hear and understand your message because iron deficiency is so under diagnosed. Keep up the good work.

There is a lot of misunderstanding as to what iron or a lab test is actually testing.

So high intake of iron in older young an older men is that a problem?

Are iron and ferratin levels two distinct individual tests?
