  • If you have Iron Deficiency Anemia then this video may help you more than any other because so many people (including doctors) don't know this important fact. Tannins block your bodies ability to absorb Iron when consumed before, during, after a meal rich in iron. Don't let tannins keep you Iron Deficient. Avoid tannins so you can absorb more of the iron your body needs!
In addition to the foods mentioned in this video, Avocados and Olives also contain tannins...

    1. You need the Iron present in meat. (Heme iron) red meat, liver, etc.
    2. Avoid tannins while eating your source of iron - liquids such as any coffee, tea, wine, most beers, fruit juices such as grape, apple, cranberry, any berry juice
    3. No chocolate/cocoa. It decreases iron absorption
    4. Less ripe the fruit, more tannin concentration. Similar for berries, bananas etc. (Unripe bananas have high tannins)
    5. Avoid most nuts, beans, legumes and lentils.
    6. Avoid rye, barley and sorghum
    7. Avoid spices like cinnamon, clove, thyme and vanilla.

I ate all the right “iron rich” plant foods pretty much every meal, i was diligent about my health. I ate zero processed food, alcohol or sugar. Still struggling. I started eating meat 10 months ago after another infusion disappearing out of my system soon after having it. My iron levels were anaemic and shot through the roof after 6 weeks eating meat to the middle range of healthy. Been in normal range since. Now im week 1 carnivore and i feel like a superhuman!!! I am a 54yo male, I was just diagnosed with iron deficiency, my hemoglobin was very low. Got blood work done. My Nurse Practitioner and my doctor told me because I had gastric bypass surgery and gallbladder/gallstones removal, my stomach is not absorbing the iron I eat much at all. They told me to take 65mg of iron with 500mg of vitamin C on an empty stomach. Unfortunately, I have had some side effects. Stomach cramps, complete flushing of my small & large colon (poopage) but they said it would take a while for my body to adjust to the intake of iron that has been missing. And this is something I will need to do for the rest of my life. Getting older is much more challenging than being younger.

I cannot thank you enough for the knowledge you shared in this particular video. I was desperately and unsuccessfully trying to increase my dangerously low iron level. I incorporated more beef, more bison and liver into my diet but the absorption wasn't where it should be. My iron increased just a little only to decrease again. Now I see that I was doing it all wrong. I sprinkled every piece of red meat and liver with thyme and/or cloves, I ate a considerable amount of dark chocolate 'to increase my iron any way I could', I consumed avocado with eggs, drank herbal tea, very very occasionally a glass of beer or a glass of wine with my meat or had it with a piece of bread. I have been short of breath on and off for years! I didn't know tannines were undoing all my efforts. This can be life changing for me. Thank you.

You can figure this out. Just look into it. Look for confirmation that tannins block iron absorption. It makes sense to me. Then just look up which foods have a lot of tannins.
But the bottom line is, if you have some form of anemia, then you need red meat. Period. Not all this other stuff(stuff that I used to eat a lot of btw but do not anymore, it’s just not necessary ). I hear people all the time telling me about how their doctors steered them the wrong way. Most of them are led by big pharma and vegan/vegetarian mythology . Why on earth wouldn’t they just tell you to eat red meat? Everybody has a guilt complex about eating animals I guess. Good grief, keep it simple.
With a very brief search on it myself, I see that tannins induce hemostasis, which is the stopping of the flow of blood. Which is great if you are bleeding to death, but not very good if you need to build up the blood-at least in my mind. So very quickly I’m learning something new here.

Well this was an eye opening, informative video. I am ketovore, eating mostly beef, bacon, eggs and cheddar cheese daily. Occasionally chicken. I was surprised to find out from bloodwork that I need to be supplementing iron even on that steady diet.
I've been careful with green tea consumption because I was aware of how it affects iron absorption. I thought I was doing well.
From this video, it would seem I am eating a ton of things that affect my iron.
    > I eat one small chocolate square of 72% dark chocolate after my meal. (ding)
    > I have one small snack a day made from:
    - heavy whipping cream
    - frozen raspberries (ding)
    - instant coffee (ding)
    - unsweetened dark cocoa (ding)
    - cinnamon and sometimes clove (ding and ding)
    - vanilla extract and sometimes vanilla powder (ding and ding)
    > For awhile I was drinking coffee with mct oil daily, too. Stopped that recently, at least.
    > I occasionally have a few cashews. (ding) This one probably isn't as bad as the daily use of so many of the others.
Glad to understand why I was experiencing low iron on a strict meat-heavy diet. I've got some changes to implement. Thank you, Dr. Berry.
