Neither was Russia and Ukraine before 1991, and Germany was divided prior to 1990. Yet they all were visible at the beginning of the video - in 1960.

I don't agree the one-child policy is a "disastrous failure", it fails in some way but, to be honest, without that, especially in 1970s, there will be endlessly many families in poverty which having 3 - 4 children, making the poverty even worse and no child will be provided with good resources to develop. Without the policy, China will be packed in maybe 2 billion people inside, which is terrible.
The policy created another problem of aging populations (which is the main failure), therefore the policy stops at right time. It completed its duty and faded away from us. you never get perfect solutions in real life.

@@WawamuStatsHa thanks, my dad (comes from rural area in China, born in 1957) once told me during his era, families often make 3 - 4 babies simply because there was a high chance that babies will die after born, caused by poor medical conditions. People are poor during the time, poor people tend to make more babies because of the similar reason. Nowadays there is no such a restriction in China but couples still refuse to make huge amount of babies and causing problem, simply because rich people don't need that.
So true... Powerty usually comes with high fatalities of young children, and China obviously couldn't bear that many people in terms of natural resources. One child policy is too aggressive, because it started too late -- there was an advocate in 70s to have exactly 2 babies but it was never enforced in wrong belief of more people having more power. It also ended too late. Committee of family planning overly overestimated current will of bearing children.

It is not possible to grow five faster than the rate of India. The government is utilising the young population and it will improve on that. If countries could grow five times GDP would grow 40 to 50% which would mean budget for the country where the government can spend on infrastructure, education,etc would grow that fast.

Kwantung province in China is densly populated and is highly productive while Inner Mongolia is sparsely populated and is less productive.

Decline in population
Having a low birth rate is bad because it means your country will have more old people than young people. Young people can work and make money, help the economy and the country. Old people can't do that, they don't have the physical capability to be help to their country's economy which is why they end up becoming a liability. There's a reason things like retirement exists. The point I am trying to make is that for a country to have a rapid decline of young people means an absolutely catastrophic disaster, when the Chinese govt noticed how many old people were in their country and how less young people were there, they IMMEDIATELY stopped the one child policy. The reason countries like china and Russia are acting so aggressively is because they know they are in a time bomb. Both these countries have a RAPID decline in young population. Lets take Russian Ukrainian war, even if Russia wins it will still be in a worse position than Ukraine. It's economy is in a very bad shape, the incompetence of its military has been shown to the world and it will probably not be in a good shape, whereas Ukraine will get insane amounts of helps and funding by the west to fix its destroyed lands and economy. The point I am trying to get is that the Chinese one child policy was a disastrous failure because of how it RAPIDLY decreased it's young population and increased its old population.
China didn't fail as you stated , India will face serious problems if they don't do something to stop the population growth.

how is the one child policy a failure, it achieved what it wanted to, young population in an economy without a strong manufacturing industries that can employ them is a source of unrest, crime and a burden to the country not a benefit.
As we speak more and more jobs are being replaced by AI and robots/ automation, the burden of a large, and uneducated population will strain the economy not boost it, so if india wants to be developed they should've started population control yesterday.
China is the last major nation on Earth to become developed through human labour, from now on, cheap labour simply cannot compete with robots. and service jobs that indians view with pride will be replaced even faster by AI.
Economic prosperity isn't everything. There are tens of millions of Chinese males who'll never get a wife and have to lead a bachelor live, then female infanticide was sky high as everyone wanted guys not girls, sex ratio is totally screwed

20-24 year old ratio is 100.9 : 100, pretty much even,
25 to 29 ratio is 101.3 : 100 again pretty much even.
30-34 ratio is 104 : 100
the reason why the China gender ratio myth exist is due to western propaganda, the 30 million more male figure often quoted by western media is utterly false, these western sources look at the overall gender ratio and made up the number, while never look into the census data by age group, because of they did, they'll see a clear trend of female population growing faster than male population between the +-5 years age group. the census is taken every 10 years.
this is mainly caused by misreporting and not reporting of female infants, which is why the 0-4 age range of Chinese census going back to 1990 is always the most skewed, and when those infants reaches of age, they suddenly appear in the official census years later, in China females need to register their households before they can legally marry. causing a surge of females suddenly appearing on the census data.
Prof. John Kennedy of University of Kansas did a thorough study of the gender imbalance in China, and have found the numbers reported by media to be vastly overblown.

india's development is already too late. there is simply no conceivable way for the indian government to lift the poor population out of poverty. india obviously can't copy what China did, they always boast about their "Indian way" but it seems like the indian way is no way.
labour laws, power outages, government red tape prevents indian factories to reach large scale, which is why most indian local "factories" are still small workshops catering to local demands occupying the lowest end of manufacturing.

So sad to see Europe disappear. We are slowly aging and EU instead of pushing children policies they push the idea of taking already grown men as workforce via (illegal) immigration, causing social and cultural traumas, and no future for the Country. If you put short term economy over society and culture (and long term economic strategies), your country will slowly die. And that's what happening to us.

@Рамис Карама That growth is only because of disproportions in population. There are peaks and declines in birth number every 25-30 caused by the wave of people entering birthgiving age. And their quantity varies becuse of World War and 90's crysis. Birth rate will inevitably fall in the next few years as those who was born in 90s become the main reproducing generation. You can easily see it yourself if you look at Russia's population pyramide. e

Right now, try going into malls during Sundays and I guarantee you. You will never see an adult who has more than 3 kids these days. Pinoy only tend to have 1-3 kids these days.
The same in Brasil. My grandmother had 10 kids. My mother had 5 kids. My siblings and cousins don't wanna have kids. Our family will end in our generation.
