  • This video shows the Top 20 countries with highest GDP PPP from 1800 to 2040 based on 2011 international dollars. It gives a brief history of the world since the 1800s. China and India were ahead before the 1900s while the US started leading after the 20th century.
    Purchasing power parity (PPP) is a neoclassical economic theory that states that the exchange rate between two countries is equal to the ratio of the currencies' respective purchasing power.

Plus, rationing was emplaned so people had to watch what they spend. Also, people grew food in their backyards. The war helped kickstart our economy.

      This is a very simplistic outlook. How is the data even quantified? The data is very dubious. Agricultural production in huge, fertile and populous areas would obviously be much greater. What is this data being measured on? This doesn't mean that India or China were nearly as economically advanced as Britain, and India was part of the empire anyway. British GDP per capita has also been higher since before the global empire.
      Don't believe such a simplified picture to be the arbiter of economic power and advancement.

These same 9 countries are also the only countries with extraterrestrial exploration capability as of 2023: United States, Russia, China, India, Japan, and the European Space Agency (considering only the 4 member states which contribute >10% of ESA's budget: France, Germany, Italy, and United Kingdom).

      Anyway, my point is that the current world order is still very much shaped by the Industrial Revolution of 200+ years past.

    • @lunais1433
      @lunais1433 Před 7 měsíci

      @@EgovaryZenobia That's an interesting question.
      If by "current order" you mean the one formed by unequal industrialization between countries, then its end will be when every country has completed industrialization. We can predict when this will be based on when today's least developed countries reach the level of human development as today's developed countries (ex. HDI > 0.8, life expectancy > 80, GNI per capita > 30 000 in 2017 Intl $, 0% population growth, etc.). Based on extrapolations of United Nations data (via Our World In Data), I predict today's least developed countries (ex. Niger, Burundi) will reach this level in ~2130 - 2140; however, it will likely take a few more decades for the industrialization process to fully stabilize.
      Currently, there are 39 UN member states classified as "advanced economies" by the IMF, and 46 UN member states classified as "least developed countries"; the remaining 108 states (56%) are in the middle. This is an approximate 1:2:1 ratio, which means the world is approximately in the centre of the industrialization process. The Industrial Revolution began in earnest in ~1800, so by this (imprecise) symmetric argument, the process should complete in full by ~2200.
      But, if by "current order" you mean the European/American-dominated order, then its end will be when many non-European/American countries (not just China and India) either have completed industrialization or are rapidly industrializing. Again using UN data, I predict this will occur in ~2070 - 2100.

      That’s a hard one to say, honestly. How PPP is calculated in one country vs. another is very, very difficult to be systematically consistent with and requires significant variations on how different items are weighted. Calculating GDP is a hard enough task, but PPP is monumental. Personally, I don’t know how much stock I put in PPP, but I think it helps me understand a nation’s situation less than GDP and GDP per capita does.

    • @space_3669
      @space_3669 Před 3 lety +22

      No, GDP (normal) is much more important. The same house in developed and backward countries is equivalent in PPP. But it is obvious that the houses in the slums and the villas in Los Angeles are not the same value at all. PPP will only make the backward countries feel good. In China, no one talks about PPP, even though China has long been number one in the world.

      @@chaseonthecase9191he reason why America became first on the board is mainly due to geographical location (no threat nearby). If America is in Europe, then America will never became US (Superpower). Germany become one of the strongest country in the world (from 19th to 20th century) where they went through a whole process of uniting their nations (to form the Second Empire) and industry revolution within 100 years.
      Germany even become the strongest country in the world after 20 years of losing WW1. The reason why Germany couldn’t be like America nowadays is because that Germany’s geographical location is in Europe where there’s France on the West, Poland (+ Russia or USSR on the East), mountains on South and Britain on the North, so it’s impossible to expand their nationalism, imperialism.
      The time when Germany became one of the strongest country (1900s) was too late for colonialism (because Britain and France already most of the colony in the world).
      US had different condition, where they had no needs on expanding their land etc.
      USSR was special as well, they successfully completed their first few Five Years plan which leads them to a high development in Economy, it’s also the only country that’s continuously growing in the Great Depression. The reason why USSR failed or dissolved is mainly due to the fall of communism and imperialism for constant expansion of land. This causes countries in Europe (Poland, Germany, France etc) and Asia (India, China) to form an Anti-Soviet alliances (ofc, it include USA for being the competitor in the Cold War).
      Japan’s GDP grows like crazy since 1950s but fall in 1990s, this is because they’re the “Defeated Country” of WW2 and USA’s sanctions.
      China’s GDP growth is incredibly fast. Ever since The Republic of China was formed, China mainland’s GDP isn’t that dazzling anymore. Even after The People’s Republic of China took over, there was a whole time period between 1950 (after the Korean War) to 1980 where China is extremely poor (mainly due to the various population). However, China’s economy went on rocket ever since 1991 (after USSR dissolved), within 30 years, it almost reached US’s GDP (China’s GDP: $18,700 billion. USA’s GDP: $25,500 billion).
